Support For Screening And Intervening On Adolescent Depression: Provider-Reported Training Outcomes, Leah Rose Lalonde Jan 2020

Support For Screening And Intervening On Adolescent Depression: Provider-Reported Training Outcomes, Leah Rose Lalonde

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Given the potential consequences of untreated adolescent depression and the prevalence of untreated mental health among adolescents, the American Academy of Pediatrics has strongly recommended active support and monitoring of depressive symptoms in pediatric primary care. Primary care providers (PCPs), however, do not have sufficient training to provide this level of care, contributing to low rates of identification and management of depression. The purpose of the current pilot study was to evaluate a training aimed at supporting providers in the management of adolescent depression. Results demonstrated that providers were accepting of the training and that provider knowledge of depression management …

Maternal Factors In The Disordered Eating Of Adolescent Girls: Proposing And Evaluating A New Model, Miriam Goldstein Jan 2020

Maternal Factors In The Disordered Eating Of Adolescent Girls: Proposing And Evaluating A New Model, Miriam Goldstein

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Disordered eating behaviors occur at high rates among adolescent girls of all ethnicities and are associated with increased risk of eating disorders. Maternal influences such as maternal disordered eating, childhood feeding practices, and the mother-teen relationship quality have been implicated as risk factors for disordered eating in adolescent girls, but few studies have examined the interplay of these influences within a single model, controlling for adolescent age. To address this gap, the current study proposed a theoretical model and tested a series of moderated mediation pathways from maternal disordered eating to disordered eating behaviors in female adolescents. The model was …

Effect Of Nutrition Education On Food And Beverage Choices Of Adolescent Female Dancers, Marie Ann Williams Oct 2017

Effect Of Nutrition Education On Food And Beverage Choices Of Adolescent Female Dancers, Marie Ann Williams

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Lifestyle choices affect the risk of obesity and ill-health among youth. This study determined whether providing nutrition education to adolescent females enrolled in dance classes influenced their beverage and food choices. It was hypothesized that providing six 10-minute nutrition education sessions for three weeks to adolescent dancers would increase their healthy beverage and food choices. Sixteen girls (12-18 years), from two dance studios in Kingsport, Tennessee, completed this pre-test/post-test study. After nutrition education, soda consumption reduced by 7.7%; sugar sweetened beverages (excluding sodas) reduced by 23%; intakes of fruits and vegetables were enhanced by 5.6% and 21%, respectively. Paradoxically, home-cooked …

A Qualitative Study Of Adolescent Views Of Sugar Sweetened Beverage Taxes, Claire Krukowski Jan 2015

A Qualitative Study Of Adolescent Views Of Sugar Sweetened Beverage Taxes, Claire Krukowski

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A qualitative study was used to investigate adolescents’ perceptions of sugar-sweetened beverage taxes using the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitude toward the behavior, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intentions). A secondary purpose was to explore the role of habit in SSB consumption. Three focus groups were conducted at a suburban Detroit middle school with 22 students. Findings suggest that students understand short-and long-term advantages and disadvantages of sugarsweetened beverages and personal and economic impacts of a sugar-sweetened beverage tax, though the economics of a tax was confusing for them. Students stated various factors that would make reducing sugar-sweetened …

Norms, Attitudes, Perceptions, And Intentions For Benzodiazepine Prescription Drug Abuse Among Adolescents, Angela K. O'Neill Jan 2011

Norms, Attitudes, Perceptions, And Intentions For Benzodiazepine Prescription Drug Abuse Among Adolescents, Angela K. O'Neill

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A cross-sectional, quantitative study was utilized to test the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) regarding the prediction of adolescents’ behavioral intentions for benzodiazepine abuse. Subjective norms, perceived harm, and perceived behavioral control were measured to predict intentions to abuse such drugs. Similar measures for alcohol and marijuana also were assessed for comparison purposes. A survey was administered to 371 students in 8th, 10th, and 12th grades from the Chelsea School District (CSD) in March 2011. Inferential statistics, including binary logistic regression, chi-square, and repeated measures ANCOVA were used to test the null hypotheses. It was …
