Impact Of A Social Skills Intervention On The Structural Anatomy Of The Social Brain Of Autistic Adolescents, Alexis Arias

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) continues to rise as researchers seek to examine the physiological links to social and communication challenges. The Social Brain, neuroanatomical structures which play a role in social cognition, is proposed to be linked to the social and communication challenges associated with ASD. PEERS focuses on improving friendship quality and social skills among adolescents, ages 11-15 years, with higher-functioning ASD. This study included 47 participants, who were randomly assigned to two groups. Assessment measures utilized parent report and adolescent self-report at pre- and post-treatment. In addition, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) was …

Child And Caregiver Social Behavior And Joint Attention Change Following P.L.A.Y. Project Intervention, Jeffrey Scott Karst

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Autism is a complex, developmental disorder affecting approximately one in 110 children in the United States. Children with autism spectrum disorders demonstrate a variety of significant deficits, including social impairment. The limitations in social ability may be in part a product of limited joint attention development at an early age. Joint attention refers to the triadic attention between an individual, another person, and an object or event and has been shown to moderate the effectiveness of certain autism interventions. The P.L.A.Y. Project, developed by Dr. Richard Solomon, aims to train parents of children with autism to be their child's own …
