Word And Concept Learning In Poor Comprehenders, Kayleigh Ryherd
Word And Concept Learning In Poor Comprehenders, Kayleigh Ryherd
Master's Theses
The current study aimed to examine how word and concept learning is related to comprehension ability beyond decoding skill. The study considered nonverbal concept construction and verbal label mapping in explicit and implicit paradigms to determine which aspects of concept learning were easiest for individuals with low comprehension skill. A sample of 28 undergraduate student participants completed two sets of word and concept learning, where they learned categories of novel items grouped on one nonverbal and one verbal feature. After learning, they were asked to indicate which items belonged to the same category. Accuracy, reaction time, and eye movements were …
Sentence Recognition In Native And Foreign Languages : Comprehension Of Form And Meaning, Sara Elizabeth Sepanski
Sentence Recognition In Native And Foreign Languages : Comprehension Of Form And Meaning, Sara Elizabeth Sepanski
Master's Theses
The goal of language comprehension is to retrieve and retain the meaning of speech or text. Research with monolinguals has shown that participants' ability to detect structural changes in sentences decreases with time, while their ability to detect meaning changes remains accurate (Sachs, I967). In this study I examined whether this monolingual pattern holds for bilingual speakers in a second language. English-Spanish bilinguals at three different proficiency levels participated in a reading task in which native (LI) and non-native (L2) language sentences were presented. Participants read both LI and L2 sentences and were then tested for their recognition of the …

Relationship Of State-Trait Anxiety And Type Of Practice To Reading Comprehension Of College Students, Lewis R. Waid
Relationship Of State-Trait Anxiety And Type Of Practice To Reading Comprehension Of College Students, Lewis R. Waid
Master's Theses
Sixty male and female college students of average scholastic aptitude, 30 with high A-trait and 30 with low A-trait, were tested for reading comprehension following either massed (MP) or distributed practice (DP) with narrative reading material. Twice during the experiment the students' A-state was assessed through Spielberger's STAI A-state scale. The findings demonstrated; (a) high A-trait students responded to the experimental situation with greater elevations in A-state; (b) performance on the reading comprehension task was related to A-trait level with low A-trait students performing significantly better; (c) the A-state level of the students immediately prior to the reading comprehension test …
Auditory Or Visual Perception : Which Is The Better Predictor Of Reading Comprehension, Thomas Spencer Chalkley Jr.
Auditory Or Visual Perception : Which Is The Better Predictor Of Reading Comprehension, Thomas Spencer Chalkley Jr.
Master's Theses
All first and third graders from a surburban public school were administered the Kerby Learning Modalities Test (KLMT) and the Metropolitan Achievement Test Battery (MAT). The relationship between the MAT reading compre hension subtest percentile scores, the KLMT overall visual percentile scores, and the KLMT overall auditory percentile scores were explored through the use of Regression Analysis and other correlational techniques. The various correlations were used in several prediction models. There was no significant difference (p> .01) between the .full model predicting Reading Comprehension (RC) with Auditory (A) and Visual (V) and the restricted model predicting RC with A; however …
Arithmetical Vocabulary : A Factor In Verbal Problem Solving In Sixth Grade Arithmetic, Ernest A. Hoopes
Arithmetical Vocabulary : A Factor In Verbal Problem Solving In Sixth Grade Arithmetic, Ernest A. Hoopes
Master's Theses
During the writer's experience of teaching in elementary and junior high schools in Kansas he had excellent opportunity through supervision and classroom teaching to note a more-than-ordinary difficulty experienced by most children in the subject of arithmetic. Not only was the dull student baffled by the subject but many times the average and good students were "lost" when certain problems were presented. The exceptional. troublesomeness of this subject led the writer to ponder on the possible cause or causes of incorrect problem solving. One thing was apparent from observation and this was that many children seemed to lack a readiness …
The Measurement Of Vocabulary Of High School Students : A Study Of The Reliability Of Existing Tests, George Wendell Kellogg
The Measurement Of Vocabulary Of High School Students : A Study Of The Reliability Of Existing Tests, George Wendell Kellogg
Master's Theses
In view of the number of vocabulary tests that have been made in recent years and the resulting widespread use of estimates based on them, the question of whether or not a reliable absolute estimate of a person ' s vocabulary can be made from existing tests is of paramount importance . Before attacking the problem, it was necessary to define "an individual's vocabulary." It was decided that in this study vocabulary would mean not merely the number of words a person could use, but the total number of words the meanings of which he could recognize. A "reliable estimate" …
