The Women Of Justice: Narratives Of Women Attorneys In California During The 1960s And 1990s, Sarah Zion Jun 2023

The Women Of Justice: Narratives Of Women Attorneys In California During The 1960s And 1990s, Sarah Zion

Master's Theses

This thesis interviews two women attorneys who have not previously shared their stories to relate their experience of going to law school and entering the field after graduation. The study of women lawyers and their stories is not a new topic, however, there is a focus in the scholarship to only explore the tales of the women who reached the big firsts, such as first female lawyer or first female judge. By providing interviews of women who have not reached these big accomplishments, the field gains a more rounded understanding of the history of female lawyers. The two women interviewed …

We tested the efficacy of urea, borate, and a mixture of two locally collected Phlebiopsis gigantea strains in preventing pathogen colonization of fir stumps and separately, urea and borate as infection controls on experimental stem wounds. These were paired with a laboratory test on ~100 g wood blocks with and without a one-week delay between inoculation and treatment. Urea, borates, and Phlebiopsis treatments all significantly reduced the stump surface area that was colonized …

Wicked Problems: Understanding How Cities And Counties In California Are Tackling Climate Change And Homelessness, Guadalupe Michelle Franco May 2021

Wicked Problems: Understanding How Cities And Counties In California Are Tackling Climate Change And Homelessness, Guadalupe Michelle Franco

Master's Theses

California continues to endure the detrimental effects of climate change, such as poor air quality, flooding, and heatwaves. Concurrently, the state has seen an increase in the number of unhoused communities due to various ramifications such as rapid urbanization, failed political leadership, and restricted housing policies. While unhoused communities fight to access basic services, they must also now adapt to the looming impacts of climate change. Unhoused populations are especially vulnerable to climate change as they have limited access to shelter, spend the majority of their time outdoors, and lack the economic ability to adapt. While cities and counties are …

Fruit, Flower, And Thorn: A Phenological Study Of 'Wonderful' Pomegranate, Kylie M. Mendonca

Master's Theses

‘Wonderful’ pomegranate flowering and fruiting habits are not well understood. Characterizing any relationship between flowering habit and fruit size and quality could lead to effective cultural practices for producing high-value fruit. Five mature ‘Wonderful’ pomegranate trees were monitored every 5-14 days throughout the 2015 growing season. Newly emerged flowers were tagged and characterized with respect to sex (determined by ovary shape and style length at anthesis), clustering habit, age of wood on which floral buds were borne, and direction of wood growth. More than 1,100 hermaphroditic flowers were identified and ovary/fruit diameter was recorded throughout the season. In addition to …

Mesoscale Controls On The Shasta County Convergence Zone, Matthew Thomas Roberts Oct 2019

Mesoscale Controls On The Shasta County Convergence Zone, Matthew Thomas Roberts

Master's Theses

The Shasta County Convergence Zone (SCCZ) is a poorly understood terrain-forced convergence zone that develops at the northern terminus of California’s Sacramento Valley during cool season (Oct.-Apr.) trough passages. While terrain-flow interactions clearly factor into the SCCZ development, the nature of these interactions is unknown as are the mesoscale processes affecting event duration and orientation. Level-II NEXRAD radar data are used to examine the onset, duration, orientation, geographical extent, and precipitation rate of 23 SCCZ events during the 2016-2017 cool season. The analyses reveal distinct event morphologies including (1) isolated convective bands over the topography, (2) isolated convective bands displaced …

Constraining The Miocene Slip History Of The Southern San Andreas Fault Through Sedimentary Provenance Analysis, Jacqueline Giblin Aug 2019

Constraining The Miocene Slip History Of The Southern San Andreas Fault Through Sedimentary Provenance Analysis, Jacqueline Giblin

Master's Theses

Tectonic reconstructions of the southern San Andreas Fault (SAF) system (California, USA) have produced conflicting estimates of cumulative strike-slip offset from middle Miocene to present. We propose that the sedimentary record can resolve both spatial and temporal development of this system, allowing us to reconstruct the paleogeography of this system in the past 10 Ma. An important, but unresolved consideration is whether the Miocene Coachella Fanglomerate, located on the northwestward migrating Pacific side of the dextral SAF transform plate can be correlated to the Bear Canyon Conglomerate located ~200 km to the southeast in the foothills of the southerly Chocolate …

Construction And Emplacement Of Cretaceous Plutons In The Crystal Range, Southwest Of Lake Tahoe, California, Brad Buerer

Master's Theses

Three Cretaceous plutons are investigated to determine their construction and emplacement histories, focusing on magmatic foliation patterns and contact relationships with each other and with the Jurassic metasedimentary host rocks of the Sailor Canyon Formation. The earliest Cretaceous Pyramid Peak granite is a leucocratic pluton with extensive co-magmatic diorite and granite-diorite hybrid rock. It contains a single NNW -striking magmatic foliation that probably reflects the regional stress field at the time of crystallization. The granite was constructed by multiple magmatic increments, though internal contacts are scarce in homogeneous parts of the pluton. Emplacement was accommodated by roof uplift, a modest …

The Response Of A Predatory Fish, Ophiodon Elongatus, To A Marine Protected Area: Variation In Diet, Catch Rates, And Size Composition, Eric S. Anderson

Master's Theses

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are a management tool used to protect and sustain many ecologically and economically important fish species from overexploitation by recreational and commercial fishing. Lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) and some of its prey species, such as rockfish (Sebastes spp.), are species that are protected from fishing in some California MPAs. Lingcod is an apex predator that consumes a variety of fish and invertebrate species. In this study, I sought to assess the effect of an MPA on the abundance, size and diet of Lingcod. I hypothesized that Lingcod in a no-take MPA would be more …

Effects Of Substrate Warming On Sessile Marine Invertebrate Communities In Monterey Bay, California, Stephen Loiacono Jun 2016

Effects Of Substrate Warming On Sessile Marine Invertebrate Communities In Monterey Bay, California, Stephen Loiacono

Master's Theses

Increasing average global sea temperatures are one of the most direct and alarming consequences of climate change, yet it is still unclear how sessile marine communities will respond in the near- and long-term. In addition, it is unclear if warming ocean temperatures will facilitate marine invasions or primarily benefit native species. To simulate the effects of increasing ocean temperatures on sessile communities, heated settlement plates (n=7) were used in an in situ field experiment to investigate how an increase in substrate temperature (2.5°C above ambient) would affect recruitment and community development as compared to unheated control plates (n=9). Experimental treatments …

Human Impacts On Rocky Intertidal Gastropods: Are Marine Protected Areas Effective?, Cassie Bednar Jun 2015

Human Impacts On Rocky Intertidal Gastropods: Are Marine Protected Areas Effective?, Cassie Bednar

Master's Theses

As the human population has exponentially increased, so have anthropogenic effects on the ocean including pollution, eutrophication, acidification, changes in sea level, and overfishing. The California coast is visited by millions of people every year and is subject to a range of impacts. In the near-shore marine environment, people collect intertidal gastropods for food, bait or recreation. Collecting these animals has caused a decline in body size because humans preferentially take the largest individuals. Marine protected areas (MPAs), established to protect marine resources, may serve to reduce impacts to species, including gastropods. I collected 2510 individual samples to determine the …

Made Marian: Myth And Reality In The Redondo Beach Public Library, 1895-1924, Lisa Blank

Master's Theses

Librarians have been depicted in the literature as missionaries, apostles, and crusaders, militant maid Marians spreading the gospel of the library spirit. This thesis examines the historical depiction of the "typical" early librarian by posing two key questions. First, to what extent was the work of librarianship different or unique compared to that of other middle-class female occupations? And second, in what way was the librarian herself distinct from other middle-class women; that is, what defining characteristics or life events brought her to and kept her in librarianship?

Utilizing local newspapers, official reports, and census and vital statistics data, this …

Prey And Plastic Ingestion Of Pacific Northern Fulmars (Fulmarus Glacialis) Collected In Monterey Bay, California, Erica Lynn Donnelly-Greenan

Master's Theses

Marine plastic pollution affects seabirds that mistake it for prey or incidentally ingest it with prey. Northern Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) and seabirds that feed at the water's surface ingest the most plastic. This can cause health issues, including satiety that possibly leads to inefficient foraging. The objectives of this study were to examine fulmar body condition, identify cephalopod diet and ingested plastic, predict foraging areas, and determine if prey number and size was correlated with ingested plastics in Pacific Northern Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis rodgersii). Cephalopod prey were identified, measured, and enumerated; plastic and marine debris were categorized, enumerated, and weighed …
