Castle Thunder : The Confederate Provost Marshal's Prison, 1862-1865, Alan Lawrence Golden Sep 1980

Castle Thunder : The Confederate Provost Marshal's Prison, 1862-1865, Alan Lawrence Golden

Master's Theses

The Civil War is, in many respects, one of the most tragic, yet fascinating periods of this nation's history. During the last one hundred years scholars have stud ied numerous aspects of this conflict in great detail. The subject of this thesis, however, has received meager attention. The focus of this study is the Provost Marshal's prison in Richmond, Virginia, called Eastern District Military Prison or, as it is more commonly known, Castle Thunder. Castle Thunder was the only prison of its kind in the South as most of its inmates were political prisoners, deserters, and criminals, rather than captured …

The Effect Of Cognitive Coping Strategies On The Tolerance Of Human Infant Crying, Thomas C. Mann Aug 1980

The Effect Of Cognitive Coping Strategies On The Tolerance Of Human Infant Crying, Thomas C. Mann

Master's Theses

This study was an attempt to replicate and extend a pilot study which tested the efficacy of three cognitive coping strategies on the tolerance of human infant crying (Jaremka & Walker, 1978). Thirty-five male and female psychology students were divided into five groups: no-treatment control, attention placebo control, reversal of affect, distraction, and rationalization. In a pretest subjects listened to a ten minute tape of a crying infant and indicated when they first experienced an unpleasant feeling. The posttest was the same as the pretest, except the treatment groups were instructed to use a cognitive strategy to help them cope …

A Kierkegaardian Reading Of Three Novels By Faulkner, Francine Marilyn Hall Aug 1980

A Kierkegaardian Reading Of Three Novels By Faulkner, Francine Marilyn Hall

Master's Theses

William Faulkner and S¢ren Kierkegaard, although separated in time by almost a century, possess a common concern: both are deeply interested in the numerous ways in which individuals live out their lives in either hope or despair. Exploring the avenues which might alleviate this despair and providing a basis for hope are tasks both authors have accepted as theirs.

This paper relates three novels by Faulkner to the stages of existence set forth by Kierkegaard in much of his philosophical writing. I intend to show that Faulk ner's characters serve as illustrations of different ways in which an individual may …

Reproductive And Mutagenic Effects Of 5-Thio-D-Glucose Injections In Male Mice, Mus Musculus, Icr Strain, Mary E. Mcmanaway Aug 1980

Reproductive And Mutagenic Effects Of 5-Thio-D-Glucose Injections In Male Mice, Mus Musculus, Icr Strain, Mary E. Mcmanaway

Master's Theses

Adult male ICR mice of proven fertility were intraperitoneally injected daily with 60 mg/kg of 5-thio-D-glucose for 28 days. Body weights of treated male mice were unaffected during the experimental period. Relative testicular weights were significantly reduced at 121 days after initial injections in 5-thio treated males, but no significant decrease was observed at 28 days.

Onset of sterility was estimated to occur at approximately 4 weeks and persisted for 5 to 6 weeks after cessation of treatment at which time fertility was restored.

Beginning with the first injections and continuing for 121 days, the males were mated with untreated …

Effects Of Casual Attributions Of Performance Outcome On Nature Of Self-Statements And Self-Esteem, Samuel Horace Wood Aug 1980

Effects Of Casual Attributions Of Performance Outcome On Nature Of Self-Statements And Self-Esteem, Samuel Horace Wood

Master's Theses

36 college students participated in a study to determine the role of causal attributions of success and failure on the modification of self-esteem. Although Brockner (1979) has suggested that the key to augmenting self-esteem is the increasing of positive self-evaluation that follows success, several studies suggest that it is not the positive self-evaluation after success but the negative self-evaluations after failure that are crucial in determining one's level of self-esteem. Thus it was hypothesized in the present study that if external attributions were made for failures while internal attributions for success were maintained, self-esteem would increase. Subjects high and low …

The Effects Of Photoperiod And Melatonin Injections On The Reproductive System Of Male Mice, Mus Musculus, Icr Strain, Margaret Ann Shugart Aug 1980

The Effects Of Photoperiod And Melatonin Injections On The Reproductive System Of Male Mice, Mus Musculus, Icr Strain, Margaret Ann Shugart

Master's Theses

The reproductive effects of long (24L:OD), natural (14L:lOD), and short (1L:23D) photoperiods were studied in the male mouse, Mus musculus, ICR strain. One third of the mice in each photoperiodic regimen were sacrificed after 45 days. Half of the remaining mice in each regimen received daily melatonin (5-methoxy-N-acetyl tryptamine) injections for 45 additional days. Body weights, testicular and accessory sex organ weights were measured and microscopic examinations of the testes were made. Plasma testosterone levels were determined using radioimmunoassay. Other organ (pituitary, kidney, adrenal, thymus, thyroid) weights were also obtained.

An Analysis Of The Stock Market As An Indicator Of Investor Reaction To Selected National And International Events, Benjamin F. Harmon May 1980

An Analysis Of The Stock Market As An Indicator Of Investor Reaction To Selected National And International Events, Benjamin F. Harmon

Master's Theses

The idea for this research originated with the work of Bruce M. Russett and Elizabeth Hanson in Interest and Ideology: The Foreign Policy Beliefs of American Businessmen. Their work in attempting to identify businessmen's reactions (and hence, beliefs) to events during the Indo-China War by movements in stock prices is, as far as I have been able to find, unique. After discussion with Dr. John Out-land, I undertook to determine if there is a consistent pattern in stock market fluctuations as a result of domestic and international affairs. Can the attitudes of American investors toward specific events be identified through …

Regulation Of Sodium Intake In The Mongolian Gerbil, Kevin Douglas Stark May 1980

Regulation Of Sodium Intake In The Mongolian Gerbil, Kevin Douglas Stark

Master's Theses

In the present study, two experiments were conducted to examine how the gerbil (Merinos Unguiculatus) responds to a chronic sodium deficiency. Adult male gerbils with a mean body weight of 79.81 grams, were maintained for a baseline period on a normal Purina Rat Chow and then they were placed on a salt-free diet. In addition they had ad lib access to a salt solution and water in a two bottle test situation. The saline concentration was cut in half and doubled to test for regulation. There was no significant overall increase in saline consumption (expressed as a percentage of total …

State-Trait Anxiety And Incidental Learning Of Shapes And Colors In Learning Disabled Adolescents, Ladonna Gail Cabell Apr 1980

State-Trait Anxiety And Incidental Learning Of Shapes And Colors In Learning Disabled Adolescents, Ladonna Gail Cabell

Master's Theses

The present study attempted to examine the effects of anxiety on incidental learning of colors and shapes. The central task was the learning of six eve syllables with meaningfulness association values between 2.41 and 2.49. The incidental taslc was the learning of the color or shape that the syllable was printed on. The subjects were thirty-four male and female adolescents identified as learning disabled. The subjects were divided into three anxiety groups (high, medium and low) using Spielberger's State Trait Anxiety Inventory. The results· indicated that anxiety (state or trait) had no significant effect on incidental learning in adolescent subjects. …
