Four Dimensional Graphs Of Complex Functions, Malcom Lee Murrill Aug 1959

Four Dimensional Graphs Of Complex Functions, Malcom Lee Murrill

Master's Theses

Complex functions of a single complex variable involve four unknowns, two independent and two dependent variables, and thus cannot be adequately represented in two- or three- dimensional space. Various geometric constructions in both two and three dimensions have been devised in the past, however, in attempts to illuminate complex function theory. The standard and most useful, of these representations is that developed by Gauss and Riemann employing two complex planes simultanesously. These show the correspondence between a particular curve or region in the object plane and its image, as mapped by a given transformation, in the image plane.

The Development Of The Virginia State Board Of Medical Examiners, John Conner Atkeson Jul 1959

The Development Of The Virginia State Board Of Medical Examiners, John Conner Atkeson

Master's Theses

Until the latter part of the nineteenth century, the medical profession suffered from a basic lack of knowledge concerning disease and infection. The Civil War, during which thousands or men died of infection following wounds and operations was a monument to that lack of knowledge. Wounded and injured soldiers were doomed to a ,slow death .from gangrene caused by unclean operating methods and poor hospital sanitation. The number of lives that might have been saved by better techniques will never be known, but a fairly safe assumption would be that at least eighty percent of the wounded who actually came.under a.doctor's care …

A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards

Master's Theses

As the years roll by, primary sources of historical data are either lost or destroyed. This unfortunate fact has held true in the case of the Danville Military Institute. A number of good pieces of original data have disappeared since the school closed. In order to take advantage of available material before it is lost, this study of the Danville Military Institute was made. This is the first intensive study of the school, which was a credit to its city, its state, and its nation.

A Survey Of The Food Habits And Distribution Of The Fishes Of Tuckahoe Creek, Virginia, With Special Emphasis On Lepomis Macrochirus Rafinesque, David Andrew Flemer

Master's Theses

An integral part of the ecological study of any organism is a good understanding of the food relationships. Basic studies of the distribution and ecology of common fresh-water fishes are necessary before a more detailed analysis can be made of the fishes in a particular area. Lagler (1956) states that food habit studies help determine population levels, rates of growth, and condition of the fishes. He also concludes that they serve as a partial basis for determining the status of various predatory and competing forms. Raney (1942) states that an intelligent fishery management program depends heavily upon information gained through …

Substituted Triphenyl Tetrazolium Chlorides, Lawrence Donald Hanback Jul 1959

Substituted Triphenyl Tetrazolium Chlorides, Lawrence Donald Hanback

Master's Theses

The work in this thesis is a continuation of a project started at the University of Richmond in 1952 by A. G. Richardson under the directorship of Dr. J. S. Pierce and Dr. George z.Williams, Director of Clinical Pathology, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.

Area Wage Differentials : A Study Of Compensation Of Nonmanagement Personnel In Virginia, Francis Brownell Avery

Master's Theses

This paper is a study of area differentials, within the State of Virginia, in the compensation of non management; employees and the effect of "Cost-of-Living" upon wage differentials. Basically, area differential in wages means the difference between wage rates for the same job in different communities. There is a definite differential in wage payments for a given job in the various regions within the State of Virginia. Some times they appear to be almost incomprehensibly out of line. However, as this paper develops, the reasons for these differences may become clear. Certainly their existence will be apparent. A given job …

Serious Domestic Drama As Tragedy : A Study Of The Protagonist, Charles Turney Jan 1959

Serious Domestic Drama As Tragedy : A Study Of The Protagonist, Charles Turney

Master's Theses

Domestic drama is the most popular genre employed by the modern dramatist. The question may arise as to whether or not tragedy is any longer desired by the playgoer. In these representative plays, taken from many countries and written on a variety of themes all centered around domestic life, as judged by the criteria established in the first chapter, few of these dramas succeed as tragedies. This is not to be interpreted to mean that the so-called "tragic impulse" is dead. Those plays which are classed as tragedy are pure tragedy-- dramas at the peak of intensity demanded by the …
