A study of the age and growth of black crappie, Pomoxis nigromaculatus, was conducted in Lake Anna, Virginia, a cooling impoundment for Virginia Power's North Anna Power Station. Growth of the population in the reservoir was compared to that of the population in North Anna's Waste Heat Treatment Facility. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) using age as the covariate indicated the growth rate of the two populations did not differ significantly at the .05 level. Dietary Induced Weight Gain And Recovery Of Body Weight In Mongolian Gerbils, Maryann Mccarthy

The purpose of this study was to explore the capacities of male and female gerbils for recovery from increased weight gain produced by ingestion of high fat food. Thirty-six gerbils, assigned to either 20% or 40% groups with nine males and nine females in each percent weight gain group, were fed powdered chow under baseline conditions, then switched to a high fat diet until they reached target weight increase, and then returned to powdered chow. The 40% group was eliminated from the comparisons due to the failure of the gerbils to reach criterion. No sex differences were found in the …

This thesis examines the life and influence of Michel Aflaq, the founder of the Arab Ba'th Party. Aflaq's Ba'thists seized power in Syria and Iraq after military coups in 1963. Much like Lenin, Aflaq, secretary general of the Ba'thist Party since its inception, has emphasized the necessity of maintaining an elite vanguard of party leadership rather than a mass movement to insure the purity of Ba'thist ideology. This political ideology has, as its focus, the three goals of the party slogan: "Unity, Liberty and Socialism."

Loy Wesley Henderson was the Director of the Office of Near Eastern and African Affairs (NEA) in the Department of State from 1945-1948. A veteran Soviet observer, he persis~ tently called for the use of economic aid in the Near East to increase American prestige and prevent Soviet expansion. Believing that American principles and national interests should be the basis of foreign policy rather than partisan politics, Henderson was a leading influence in the formulation of the Truman Doctrine but disagreed with the Truman Administration's support of a Jewish state in Palestine. The existence of a sodium-ion-for-hydrogen-ion exchange mechanism in the membranes of certain epithelial cells has been demonstrated by many investigators (Murer et al., 1976; Tsai et al., 1984; Seiler et al., 1985 ) • This mechanism has been shown to exchange one Na+ for one H+ (Aronson & Igarashi, 1986) and is thought to be more prominent in the brush-border membranes (Murer et al., 197 6; Reenstra et al., 1981 ; Ives et al., 1983) of mammalian kidney tubules and intestinal tissues than in basolateral membranes of these tissues. Although we live in a time in which strategies using nuclear weapons dominate the attention of most defense analysts, there are reasons why more attention should be paid to conventional defense strategy. This thesis explores NATO's strategy for defending Central Europe with conventional battlefield weapons. The discussion centers on the military and political complexities involved in the strategy of Forward Defense. Included also is a brief history of NATO, highlighting the political and military events that helped shape today's conventional defense arrangements. Particular emphasis is placed on illustrating the methods and factors involved in the implementation of Forward Defense.
