Subsisting On Non-Livable Wages: Women In Pittsburgh's Public Housing, Laurel Jeanne Person May 2000

Subsisting On Non-Livable Wages: Women In Pittsburgh's Public Housing, Laurel Jeanne Person

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

With the largest per capita public housing stock in the United States, Pittsburgh has been wrestling with policy reforms throughout the 1990s. The federal Hope VI program was instituted by the Clinton administration in an effort to revamp the nation’s public housing system. Though the program’s intentions are admirable, the results in Pittsburgh have been injurious. Long-term residents have lost the only place they knew as home, families stay in shelters until appropriate units become available, and Hope VI diverts funds from restoration projects to meet the Housing Authority’s political agenda. Given this volatile situation in the “Iron City”, I …

Kate Chopin's Contribution To Realism And Naturalism: Reconsiderations Of W. D. Howells, Maupassant, And Flaubert., Jean Ann Witherow Jan 2000

Kate Chopin's Contribution To Realism And Naturalism: Reconsiderations Of W. D. Howells, Maupassant, And Flaubert., Jean Ann Witherow

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

No one has previously undertaken a detailed examination of Kate Chopin's documented intertextuality with writers such as W. D. Howells, Hamlin Garland, Maupassant, and Flaubert. My purpose is to examine Chopin's works in the context of writers with whom she interacts and so to reveal her impact on the development of literary realism and naturalism. My study reveals that, though her mature writing eliminates sentimentalism, she never abandons romance elements residual from her youth. Her typically subjective narrator removes narrative authority, intensifies our involvement with characters, and validates the marginalized voice. Darwin and the philosophers temper her Catholicism, yet she …

Effects Of Reading Styles On African-American Preschoolers Of Disadvantage., Elizabeth Nowlin Witt Jan 2000

Effects Of Reading Styles On African-American Preschoolers Of Disadvantage., Elizabeth Nowlin Witt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the effects of two styles of storybook reading within the storybook reading event (SBRE) upon African-American preschoolers of disadvantage (AAP-D). One style, performance-oriented, was thought to be closer to cultural frameworks familiar for this population. This style was contrasted with the interactive style familiar to children of middle-class. Each style was utilized with two groups of five children (ten children per condition) across three storybooks, which were each read six times. Pre- and posttesting were used to determine changes in language (semantic and discourse ability, as measured by retelling), literacy, and world knowledge. A control group of …

Behavioral Outcome Of Preschoolers Exposed Prenatally To Cocaine: The Role Of The Caregiving Environment., Veronica L. Haynes Jan 2000

Behavioral Outcome Of Preschoolers Exposed Prenatally To Cocaine: The Role Of The Caregiving Environment., Veronica L. Haynes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluated the long-term effects of prenatal cocaine exposure on child behavioral outcome at age 5 years, while considering the influence of the postnatal caregiving environment indicated by maternal drug use, maternal psychological functioning, and parenting quality. Behavioral outcome was measured by parent-reported behavior problems on the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. Subjects were 210 preschoolers (107 cocaine-exposed and 103 nondrug-exposed) and their biological mothers drawn from a larger cohort of mother-child pairs enrolled at birth in a longitudinal study evaluating the neurodevelopmental outcomes of children prenatally exposed to cocaine. The relationships among prenatal cocaine exposure, maternal adaptation (i.e., maternal …

Environmental Voting In Congress., John Christopher Howell Jan 2000

Environmental Voting In Congress., John Christopher Howell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research project is designed to explore the field of voting on environmental issues in the House of Representatives. A variety of factors are considered in determining why representatives vote as they do; among those factors are party identification, ideology, gender, and region of the country. Special attention is devoted to the difference between those environmental issues in which private property rights are involved and those in which property rights are not at issue. The research project consists of four case studies, each one of an environmental issue. Each case study describes the issue and explains why it is pertinent …

Masked Criticism: The Whore And The Breeches Role As Articulators Of Sexual Economic Theory In The Intrigue Plays Of Aphra Behn., Mary Katherine Politz Jan 2000

Masked Criticism: The Whore And The Breeches Role As Articulators Of Sexual Economic Theory In The Intrigue Plays Of Aphra Behn., Mary Katherine Politz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aphra Behn was an important playwright in the Restoration, second only to John Dryden in the number of plays produced during the period. In some of her early plays based on Spanish intrigue comedies, she uses the roles of whores and cross dressed women to articulate her criticism of the sexual economy within patriarchy. Masks and disguises create confusion in all the plays. Her characters, plots, structure, humor and economic concerns change with each successive play. The first play in the series, The Dutch Lover (1673) is a tale of romance where women are exchanged between men for the benefit …

Slain In The Spirit: A Vodun Aesthetic In Selected Works Of Simone Schwarz -Bart, Zora Neale Hurston, And Paule Marshall., Maria Thecla Smith Jan 2000

Slain In The Spirit: A Vodun Aesthetic In Selected Works Of Simone Schwarz -Bart, Zora Neale Hurston, And Paule Marshall., Maria Thecla Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study, focusing on select novels by women writers of the African diaspora, discovers a surprising commonality among works with obvious geographical, cultural and linguistic differences---an affirmation of the philosophical essence of the Vodun religion as an antidote to Western spiritual and cultural moribundity. Each of the novels---Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Simone Schwarz-Bart's Pluie et Vent sur Telumee Miracle, and Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow---alludes to the Vodun pantheon, ancestor veneration and/or rituals in order to valorize the holistic Vodun worldview that recognizes the interconnectedness of all living things and the fluidity of boundaries between …

Linking Postsecondary Sub -Baccalaureate Institutional Experience To The Career Planning Needs Of Future Workforce., Joycelyn Harrison Brunswick Jan 2000

Linking Postsecondary Sub -Baccalaureate Institutional Experience To The Career Planning Needs Of Future Workforce., Joycelyn Harrison Brunswick

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent changes in the labor market and predictions by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that many of the jobs available in the 21st century will not require a four-year college degree, in contrast to what many high school students perceive will provide their entree to a successful career. Jobs which will be in demand necessitate highly specialized skills which can be developed at post-secondary sub-baccalaureate (PSSB) institutions. High school graduates who do not have the ability, time, money or inclination to earn a bachelor's degree may well obtain economic security by acquiring those skills in great demand, enabling them …

Factors Influencing The Retention Of Adult Volunteer Leaders In The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service 4 -H Program., Ismet Boz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main purpose of this study was to determine contributions adult volunteer leaders make for 4-H and to identify factors influencing the retention of adult volunteer 4-H leaders in the Louisiana Cooperative Extension 4-H Program. A random sample of 196 adult volunteer 4-H leaders from 10 Louisiana parishes were the participants of this study. The data collection instrument was pre-tested for reliability and yielded a .96 Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient for its 84 scale items. Anticipating approximately a 50% response rate, 400 surveys were mailed out in September, 1999. After two attempts were made for follow-up 218 usable surveys …

Suburbianation: Reading Suburban Landscape In Twentieth -Century American Fiction And Film., Robert Andrew Beuka Jan 2000

Suburbianation: Reading Suburban Landscape In Twentieth -Century American Fiction And Film., Robert Andrew Beuka

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the years following the end of World War II, a new kind of landscape emerged in the United States, one that would immeasurably alter the way Americans think about place. Critics and commentators greeted the emergence of the environment we know as "suburbia" with a mixed reaction: for some, the suburbs represented the material embodiment of the "American Dream"; for others, architectural and environmental homogeneity marked the new suburbs as an alienating, even dangerous terrain. In the half-century since the onset of mass-suburbanization, the United States---which has, by now, become a primarily suburban nation---has continued to struggle with the …

Hearsay, Testimony And Conference: Citationality In The Works Of Marguerite Duras, Maurice Blanchot And Jacques Derrida., Mary Carla Criner Jan 2000

Hearsay, Testimony And Conference: Citationality In The Works Of Marguerite Duras, Maurice Blanchot And Jacques Derrida., Mary Carla Criner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation involves an examination of the effects and implications of three modes of citationality: hearsay, testimony and conference. As a term coined by Jacques Derrida, citationality involves the problematization of questions related to borders and limits and to the attempt to re-present the originary event thought to lie beyond the performance of citational acts of bearing witness. In chapter one I situate my project theoretically through an examination of the principles of deconstruction. In particular, Jacques Derrida's work on the metaphysical concepts of presence and speech, in terms of repeatability or iterability, bears heavily on my study. As a …

A Narrative Study Of Selected Introductory College Biology Students' Struggles To Gain An Understanding Of Scale And Measurement., Juliana Guillory Hinton Jan 2000

A Narrative Study Of Selected Introductory College Biology Students' Struggles To Gain An Understanding Of Scale And Measurement., Juliana Guillory Hinton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Case studies, developed with criteria from Yin's Case Study Research: Design and Methods (1994), probed single mental constructs of four introductory college biology students who were recent high school graduates. Data sources included autobiographical essays, interviews, coconstructed concept maps (Wandersee & Abrams, 1993), a videotape questionnaire, and graphics. A multisensory microscopy experiment provided the setting for the construction of shared meanings by the participants. Concept maps were used then to explore the existing cognitive framework of the participants. This research affirmed the value of supporting graphic organizers for understanding science (Good & Berger, 1998; Hyerle, 1996; Trowbridge & Wandersee, 1998). …

Ergonomic Evaluation Of Manually Operated Valves., Eileen Bordelon Hoff Jan 2000

Ergonomic Evaluation Of Manually Operated Valves., Eileen Bordelon Hoff

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Due to the large number of facilities that produce oil and gas with numerous valves used, a review of valve handwheel operation was of interest. Review of literature on two handed handwheel tasks yielded very little and raised questions about what amount of torque a user could exert on a handwheel. The objectives of this research were to determine the effects of height of exertion, orientation of the handwheel and type of handwheel while making two-handed torque exertions, test a custom designed handwheel against commonly distributed handwheels and to determine the effects of gloves commonly used in the oil and …

Children's Identity Construction In A Multicultural Setting., Edith Taylor Richardson Powers Jan 2000

Children's Identity Construction In A Multicultural Setting., Edith Taylor Richardson Powers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study of cultural identity has thus far been rather unidimensional, portraying a child as a member of a single cultural group that has a homogeneous culture. Over the past twenty-five years, much of the research on the relationship between culture and education has looked at children's educational processes through the lens of group membership. This study examined six children from different cultures as they constructed their own identities within the multicultural classroom environment over the period of a year. It was designed to examine how individual children take on cultural "ways" that are associated with other cultural groups and …

Structuring Work And Family Lives: Flexible Employment Patterns Among United States Families., Melissa Oliver Stainback Jan 2000

Structuring Work And Family Lives: Flexible Employment Patterns Among United States Families., Melissa Oliver Stainback

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation focuses on how working families use flexible employment to manage multiple demands associated with combining work and family responsibilities. I argue that flexible employment outcomes are family adaptive strategies and decisions about these strategies are embedded in the household and occur in a context in which husbands and wives make joint decisions about their career trajectories, family obligations and community commitments. Therefore, I expect household models, rather than individual models, to provide a richer understanding of decisions about family and employment outcomes. These models explore more fully how couples may diversify employment participation. Furthermore, household level variables provide …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the study was to describe young children's efferent and aesthetic responses to informational trade books. During the study a first-grade teacher read aloud the trade books to the whole class and four children were interviewed following the read-alouds using a standard open-ended interview approach. A scale developed for the study was used to code the efferent and aesthetic level of the responses as: most efferent, primarily efferent, primarily aesthetic, and most aesthetic. Data were analyzed to answer the following questions: (1) Do children have aesthetic as well as efferent responses to informational trade books? If so, how …

Tradition, Rhetoric, And Propriety In Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz., Lilian Albertina Contreras-Silva Jan 2000

Tradition, Rhetoric, And Propriety In Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz., Lilian Albertina Contreras-Silva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The writings of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz serve as her personal proclamation for the right of a woman to write and lead an intellectual life. The study begins by reviewing the Baroque world and its artistic trends. This is done in chapter one so that Sor Juana's artistic production can be better situated in the world at large. In chapter two, the study proceeds to review the professional nature of Sor Juana's writing. By observing the diverse nature of the nun's work, as well as the compensation for much of it, the nature of Sor Juana's motivation for …

Alcohol Abuse And Violent Crime: A Contemporary Examination And Comparison Of Adult Male And Female Violent And Nonviolent Criminal Offenders., Don Randall Haley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this study was to investigate the relationship between violent criminal activity and alcohol abuse, and to further extend the knowledge about these phenomenon which currently appear in the literature. The association between these two variables has been asserted for many years, but few definitive correlations have been established using representative data. This study sought to determine if a statistical relationship exists between alcohol abuse rates of inmates serving time in Louisiana and their convictions for violent crimes. The research design used to investigate the relationship between alcohol abuse and violent criminal behavior was non-experimental and correlational. Interviews …

Coming Home: Homecomings And Return Migration In African -American Folklore And Literature Since 1970., Stephanie Gail Hall

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores homecoming narratives and the representation of return migration in African-American folklore and in African-American literature written since 1970. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, sociological, historical, religious and literary criticism are incorporated to examine African-American church and communal homecomings, personal memoir, and novels as extensions of the Great Migration narrative, leading to a reconfiguration of the South as "home." This study includes an analysis of the structural features of the homecoming narrative, including the "moment of return," the migrant's connection to the Southern landscape, the significance of feast, and rituals of homecoming ceremonies. Subsequent chapters explore the decision to …

The Relationship Of Daily Stress And Health In Adolescents: Development Of The Daily Stress Inventory For Adolescents (Dsi -A)., John Michael Huete Jan 2000

The Relationship Of Daily Stress And Health In Adolescents: Development Of The Daily Stress Inventory For Adolescents (Dsi -A)., John Michael Huete

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Daily stress has been documented to play a significant role in symptom exacerbation of chronic illnesses in adults, such as coronary heart disease, asthma, diabetes, and chronic headaches. Mediating daily stress may be effective in not only decreasing problem symptoms in chronic illness, but also decreasing unnecessary and costly primary and tertiary health care services. While the effects of daily stress have been well researched and documented with adult populations, adolescent populations have been afforded only minimal research attention. Given that the period of adolescence is a time when persons are first experiencing the stresses of adult life, understanding the …

The Role Of Major And Minor Stressors In Moderating The Transtheoretical Model Of Exercise Behavior Among Predominantly Low -Income Patients Attending Primary Care Clinics., Shawn Kahlil Jeffries Jan 2000

The Role Of Major And Minor Stressors In Moderating The Transtheoretical Model Of Exercise Behavior Among Predominantly Low -Income Patients Attending Primary Care Clinics., Shawn Kahlil Jeffries

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A sedentary lifestyle is prevalent in the United States and is associated with poor health outcomes (Blair et al., 1989). While regular exercise has been shown to have numerous physical and mental health benefits, much of the population does not perform physical activity at a level necessary to achieve significant health benefits. Primary care settings have become increasingly targeted areas for physician-based exercise counseling. One popular theoretical model of exercise adoption is the transtheoretical model of exercise behavior (Prochaska & Marcus, 1994) which proposes that individuals progress through stages of exercise behavior. Researchers have explored constructs affecting movement through the …

Civic Engagement, Local Capitalism And Poverty: The Effects Of The Black Belt, Single Female Household Headship, And Metropolitan Status., Michelle Marie Livermore Jan 2000

Civic Engagement, Local Capitalism And Poverty: The Effects Of The Black Belt, Single Female Household Headship, And Metropolitan Status., Michelle Marie Livermore

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent research on the relationship between civic community and poverty concludes that high levels of civic involvement are associated with low poverty levels. I revisit the relationship between civic community and poverty by asking whether it differs across counties with different social structural characteristics. I test for interactions between the presence of civically engaged denominations and area racial composition, single female household headship, and metropolitan status. The association between the percent of a county's population in civically engaged denominations and poverty differs according to certain county social structural characteristics. First, areas with a critical percentage of African Americans demonstrate a …

Amy Beach's Concerto For Piano And Orchestra In C -Sharp Minor, Op. 45: A Historical, Stylistic, And Analytical Study., Katrina Carlson Rushing

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines Amy Beach's only concerto, the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in C-sharp Minor, Op. 45. The four-movement, late Romantic work for virtuoso pianist and large orchestra is a significant contribution to the genre, containing well-developed and contrasting themes, interesting and innovative harmonies, and exciting virtuosic display. This monograph explores the concerto from a historical, stylistic, and analytical perspective. The first chapter provides a brief biography of Amy Beach and an overview of her most important compositions. Chapter Two examines the historical significance, the critical reception, and the pianistic style of the concerto. The influences of other late-Romantic …

Validation Of A Screening Instrument For Exposure To Violence In Children: The Kid -Save., Anise Lavaun Flowers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Children in the United States have an increasing rate of exposure to chronic community violence. Research on children exposed to community, domestic, and war-related violence has demonstrated the traumatic effects of violence on children. The KID-SAVE was developed as an empirically-based self-report measure of violence exposure for children in grades three through seven. During an initial development study, the KID-SAVE demonstrated excellent reliability and preliminary construct validity data. The purpose of the present study was to provide further validity data on the KID-SAVE. A sample of 188 children (96 boys and 92 girls) and their parents participated in the study. …

Simulating Household Travel Survey Data In Metropolitan Areas., Stephen Peter Greaves Jan 2000

Simulating Household Travel Survey Data In Metropolitan Areas., Stephen Peter Greaves

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation proposes and tests a new approach for developing the travel survey data required for use in regional travel-demand modeling applications. Using local sociodemographic information in conjunction with a national travel survey, a simulation procedure is developed to create a synthetic household travel survey data set. The simulation procedure is tested in a region that has completed a recent travel survey---this provides a direct source of comparison for the merit of the approach. Comparisons of salient trip characteristics (trip frequencies, mode shares, departure times, and reported trip lengths) and travel-demand models estimated with these synthetic data suggest the approach …
