Thomas Davis, The Nation, And Songs Of Irish Nationalism, Timothy Mason Love Jan 2015

Thomas Davis, The Nation, And Songs Of Irish Nationalism, Timothy Mason Love

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Thomas Davis was a significant figure in the flourishing movement of cultural nationalism in mid-nineteenth-century Ireland. A cofounder of _The Nation_, Davis used the journal’s pages as a medium through which to promote a nationalist vision for Ireland distinctive for its nonsectarian appeal. Along with impassioned editorial prose, Davis employed poetry and song to carry his message to the public. “Young Ireland,” as Davis and his colleagues became known, focused their efforts especially on the traditional Irish song, elevating it as a symbol for their cultural heritage while harnessing its emotional power to strengthen their political cause. The songs printed …

Single Molecule Electrophoresis And Optical Detection Using Thermoplastic Nanofluidic Devices: An Experimental And Simulation Study, Kumuditha Madushanka Weerakoon Ratnayake Jan 2015

Single Molecule Electrophoresis And Optical Detection Using Thermoplastic Nanofluidic Devices: An Experimental And Simulation Study, Kumuditha Madushanka Weerakoon Ratnayake

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nanofludic devices provide a great platform for single molecular analysis. The unique phenomena in nanoscale gained such interest in investigating the single molecular behavior in nanochannels. Sizes less than 200 nm in one or two-dimensional structures have lead to fascinating observations not accessible in microscale. When a single molecule translocates through a nanotube it interacts with channel walls by adsorption/ desorption, van der Waals interactions and hydrophilic interactions providing a mechanism for separation without any extra additives. Moreover, double layer thickness governed by the background electrolyte plays a vital role. We report single molecular electrophoresis phenomena in nanochannels and nanoslits …

Integrated Sustainability And Resiliency Assessment Methodology For The Design Of Single-Family Residential Structures Subject To Wind And Flood Hazards, Elizabeth Chisolm Matthews Jan 2015

Integrated Sustainability And Resiliency Assessment Methodology For The Design Of Single-Family Residential Structures Subject To Wind And Flood Hazards, Elizabeth Chisolm Matthews

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sustainability and resiliency have become important in shaping the criteria in performance-based design objectives in the recent past and will continue to shape future design as climate change impacts and disasters become more prevalent. While much work has been carried out in developing tools to aid in sustainable and resilient performance-based design there is still much work to be done. It is evident that while sustainability and resiliency have mutual advantages there are also inherent conflicts between the two design approaches. Some of the conflict relates to the robustness required of resilient design, which may have higher environmental impacts than …

Empire Of Faith: Toleration, Confessionalism And The Politics Of Religious Pluralism In The Habsburg Empire, 1792-1867, Scott Michael Berg Jan 2015

Empire Of Faith: Toleration, Confessionalism And The Politics Of Religious Pluralism In The Habsburg Empire, 1792-1867, Scott Michael Berg

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The issues of religious toleration and confessionalism are complex, with deep roots and unresolved, enduring legacies. This project takes a look on one sustained attempt to tackle this problem by looking at the Habsburg Empire after the death of Joseph II (r. 1780-1790), whose far-reaching reforms established extensive state control over the Catholic Church and introduced toleration for Protestants, Orthodox Christians and, in a more limited way, to Jews. Yet ultimately, religious toleration was one of the many factors that caused Joseph’s reign to end in failure. In addition, the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars created conditions that promoted confessionalism, …

Development Of Transition Metal-Catalyzed Polymerization Reactions And Their Applications For The Preparation Of Well-Defined Conjugated Polymer Architectures, Carlos Anthony Chavez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The synthesis of conjugated polymers and design of complex materials based on them have become increasingly popular as the demand for low-cost efficient and processible optoelectronic and semiconducting devices escalates. While advanced applications of polymeric materials require some degree of sophistication, success can be achieved through careful consideration of polymerization techniques and methodologies. Controlling critical aspects of the polymerization process allows for synthesis of complex macromolecular architectures possessing unique and novel properties that may be worth of further comprehensive investigation. This dissertation primarily focuses on the development and preparation of well-defined hierarchical macromolecular architectures. The foundation of this work encompasses …

Bioplastic Production In Cyanobacteria And Consensus Degenerate Pcr Probe Design, Courtney Edward Lane Jan 2015

Bioplastic Production In Cyanobacteria And Consensus Degenerate Pcr Probe Design, Courtney Edward Lane

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cyanobacteria show much promise in reducing biodegradable thermoplastic production costs; however, most currently characterized strains are ill-equipped to do so. The result of Objective I produced a high-throughput assay designed to discover existing cyanobacterial strains and rapidly characterize them as PHA-producers or potential PHA-producers. This assay will play an instrumental role in the attainment of a novel cyanobacteria environmental isolate capable of accumulating high levels of PHA naturally. Objective II produced an open source computer program which dramatically speeds the design of similar assays for any arbitrary genetic screening purpose. The program is not limited to this implementation alone. In …

Effects Of Encoding Practice On Alphabet, Phonemic Awareness, And Spelling Skills Of Students With Developmental Delays, Laura Nicole Delrose Jan 2015

Effects Of Encoding Practice On Alphabet, Phonemic Awareness, And Spelling Skills Of Students With Developmental Delays, Laura Nicole Delrose

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Reading instruction has historically been deemphasized for students in special education, and the limited research on this topic reveals that sight word vocabulary is most commonly taught in special education classrooms (Browder, Wakeman, Spooner, Ahlgrim-Delzell, Algozzine, 2006). However, successful reading instruction must target the five essential components: vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, phonics, and phonemic awareness (National Reading Panel, 2000). The extremely small body of research attempting to teach phonics and phonemic awareness to students with mild to severe disabilities approaches instruction from a decoding framework with mixed success (Browder et al., 2006). Alternatively, this study aims to teach from an encoding …

#Becoming: Emergent Identity Of College Students In The Digital Age Examined Through Complexivist Epistemologies, Paul William Eaton Jan 2015

#Becoming: Emergent Identity Of College Students In The Digital Age Examined Through Complexivist Epistemologies, Paul William Eaton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the possibilities and limitations of conducting research on college student identity in the digital age. Utilizing philosophical theories from complexity theory, post-qualitative research, and new materialisms, I interrogate, question, disrupt, and challenge current theories and models of college student identity, largely developed from a positivist, modernist, empiricist perspective. Conducting research on college student identity in the twenty-first century may benefit from discarding the old ‘developmental’ language of the twentieth century, replacing this discourse and understanding with a language drawn from complexity theory. In this regard, I believe educators, researchers, and practitioners should begin talking about identity emergence …

Toll-Like Receptor 4 (Tlr4) In Acute And Chronic Renal Diseases, Anand R. Nair Jan 2015

Toll-Like Receptor 4 (Tlr4) In Acute And Chronic Renal Diseases, Anand R. Nair

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Despite advances in its treatment, the incidence of renal diseases has been consistently increasing. Hence, there is a need to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms of the progression of kidney diseases. Recent research implicates inflammation as an important mediator of renal injury. We hypothesized that inhibiting Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), an upstream modulator of several inflammatory pathways, would prevent the progression of renal diseases. First, we determined the mechanism by which AngiotensinII (AngII)-induced inflammation is modulated by TLR4 using an in vitro model of rat tubulo-epithelial cells. We blocked TLR4 using gene silencing strategy in NRK52E cells. In TLR4-silenced cells, …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Louisiana’s French revitalization movement has received millions of dollars in taxpayer funding through its various initiatives such as music and cultural festivals, public school French immersion programs, and academic exchange programs, among others. Over forty years ago, the state of Louisiana created CODOFIL, a government agency dedicated to the promotion of Francophone language and culture in Louisiana, yet the number of Francophones in the state has continued to decline at an alarming rate according to the most reliable data available. My study investigates the ideology and demographics of those involved in French education programs in Louisiana’s public schools. Who decides …

Pattern Mining And Events Discovery In Molecular Dynamics Simulations Data, Shobhit Sandesh Shakya Jan 2015

Pattern Mining And Events Discovery In Molecular Dynamics Simulations Data, Shobhit Sandesh Shakya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Molecular dynamics simulation method is widely used to calculate and understand a wide range of properties of materials. A lot of research efforts have been focused on simulation techniques but relatively fewer works are done on methods for analyzing the simulation results. Large-scale simulations usually generate massive amounts of data, which make manual analysis infeasible, particularly when it is necessary to look into the details of the simulation results. In this dissertation, we propose a system that uses computational method to automatically perform analysis of simulation data, which represent atomic position-time series. The system identifies, in an automated fashion, the …

Regulation Of The Chloride Store In The Retinal Amacrine Cells, Vijai Krishnan Jan 2015

Regulation Of The Chloride Store In The Retinal Amacrine Cells, Vijai Krishnan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nitric Oxide (NO) is a key gaseous messenger that has been shown to be produced by multiple cell types in the vertebrate retina. Research in our lab is aimed at unlocking critical synaptic functions of NO. A major finding from our lab is that NO affects synaptic responses in amacrine cells by altering the plasma membrane gradient for Cl-. This is due to release of Cl- from an internal store and this in turn dependent on a decrease in cytosolic pH. Determining the factors regulating cytosolic Cl- in neurons is fundamental to our understanding of the function of GABAergic and …

Articulating Situated Knowledge And Standpoints In Our Responses To Contemporary Street Fiction: A Book Club Case Study With African American Women, Yvette Rachele Hyde

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Contemporary street fiction is a form of literature that has been growing in popularity since the 1990s. Such novels are set in contemporary urban contexts and present the experiences of historically oppressed groups. Sold in venues such as independent bookstores, the Internet, barbershops, beauty salons, flea markets, street vendors, and churches (Hill, Pérez, & Irby, 2008; McClellan, 2011), this genre is especially popular among African American females. Because much of the scholarship concerning engagement with contemporary street fiction focuses on improving school literacy skills, the purpose of this study was to investigate readers’ responses in a book club held at …

Numerical Studies Of Liquid-Liquid Segmented Flows In Square Microchannels Using A Front-Tracking Algorithm, Eamonn Daire Walker Jan 2015

Numerical Studies Of Liquid-Liquid Segmented Flows In Square Microchannels Using A Front-Tracking Algorithm, Eamonn Daire Walker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Liquid-liquid segmented flows in a square microchannel are investigated numerically using a hybrid front-tracking/front-capturing method. The code is found to be well-adapted to a large range of flow parameters, but droplet flows are limited by poor accuracy at Laplace number above 100 – 1000 and plug flows are limited by the code’s current inability to adequately model the flow in thin films at low capillary numbers. A Schwarz-Aitken acceleration technique is investigated as a means to reduce computation time, but is found not to be advantageous compared to the parallel multigrid formulation of the code. Numerical simulations are divided into …

Exploring Superconductivity In Chiral Structured Aube, Drew Jared Rebar Jan 2015

Exploring Superconductivity In Chiral Structured Aube, Drew Jared Rebar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

AuBe is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor with the B20 FeSi-type structure. Noncentrosymmetric superconductors are expected to give rise to unconventional superconductivity due to spin orbit coupling and a mixed spin-singlet, spin-triplet state. The B20 structure of AuBe is particularly interesting since this is one of the only known crystal structures for bulk magnetic skyrmions in materials such as MnSi and Cu2OSeO3. The superconducting state was characterized by specific heat, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and resistivity. Specific heat revealed AuBe to host an isotropic gap characteristic of predominantly s-wave spin-singlet pairing in the weak coupling limit. Magnetization and susceptibility measurements revealed a …

White Manhood In Louisiana During Reconstruction, 1865-1877, Arthur Wendel Stout Jan 2015

White Manhood In Louisiana During Reconstruction, 1865-1877, Arthur Wendel Stout

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Economic, political, and social landscapes changed for white men in Louisiana after the Civil War. Suffering displacement, business interruption, property confiscation, and lower social and political standing vis-à-vis the former slaves, white men’s standing in every realm seemed diminished, including their core identity as men. It was important to them and to their families for white men to regain a sense of competence as men. Using letters, diaries, and court cases involving white people with strong connections to Louisiana during the Reconstruction era, this dissertation analyzes the gendered problems that white men and their families sought to resolve. Newspaper articles, …

Agnes In Agony: Damasus, Ambrose, Prudentius, And The Construction Of The Female Martyr Narrative, Eric James Poche' Jan 2015

Agnes In Agony: Damasus, Ambrose, Prudentius, And The Construction Of The Female Martyr Narrative, Eric James Poche'

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the earliest surviving sources on the virgin martyr Agnes. Agnes is significant due to the popularity of her cult and the large number of early sources recounting her martyrdom. This dissertation argues that the fourth-century bishops Damasus and Ambrose, along with the Christian poet Prudentius, helped construct the narrative of Agnes’ passion in order to help popularize her cult throughout western Christendom. In an effort to promote virgin asceticism to their communities, they endorsed Agnes as the dominant exemplum for female piety in the west. By doing so, they associated themselves with the influential martyr. Since Agnes …

The Moderating Effects Of Family Management Factors On The Relationship Between Violence Exposure And Aggression, Christine Marie Raines

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Community violence, in the form of direct victimization or witnessing violent acts, is a prevalent public safety concern in many communities. Individuals who are exposed to community violence often exhibit a variety of associated mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress symptoms. One of the most common negative outcomes associated with violence exposure among adolescents is engaging in aggressive or violent behavior. In order to mitigate the health, safety, and legal consequences associated with this outcome, it is worth examining factors that may protect adolescents from exhibiting behavior problems subsequent to community violence exposure. In the present study, …

Effect Of Attention Retraining On Pathological Eating Behaviors And Body Dissatisfaction, Jose Silgado Jan 2015

Effect Of Attention Retraining On Pathological Eating Behaviors And Body Dissatisfaction, Jose Silgado

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Prevalence rates of pathological eating behaviors (PEB) and body dissatisfaction are high among college women, and rates are rising among college men. PEB and body dissatisfaction are also risk factors for the development of clinically significant eating disorders. Further, a lesser studied factor involved in male body dissatisfaction is drive for muscularity. With approximately 70% of college women and 45% of college men experiencing body dissatisfaction, it is important to identify its potential etiological and maintaining risk factors. One such mechanism may be the construct of attentional bias. Research suggests that individuals that engage in PEB or have high levels …

A comprehensive thermal model of the rolling element bearings is developed which can predict the operating temperature of the bearing components in a wide range of operating conditions. The validity of this thermal model is verified by comparing the simulation results with a set of experiments. The results of simulations reveal that the rotational speed, oil viscosity and cooling rate of the housing have a significant influence on the operating temperature of the rolling bearings. To provide detailed information about all of the contact forces …

The Use Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies To Improve Pregnancy Rates In White-Tailed Deer, Jaclyn C. Lambe-Steinmiller Jan 2015

The Use Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies To Improve Pregnancy Rates In White-Tailed Deer, Jaclyn C. Lambe-Steinmiller

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Detection of estrus in white-tailed (WT) deer is laborious and often missed, as there are few visual cues presented during the 24 h period in which females are receptive to mating. Reproductive management of WT operations is improved by the use of fixed-timed artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols. Fixed-timed AI removes the need for estrus detection and ensures the breeding of an entire herd, as well as the ability to schedule fawning within predetermined timeframes. Two studies evaluated two FTAI regimens and their ability to synchronize estrous in WT. The first study implemented the administration of eCG 200 IU (im) at …

Seismic Velocity Characteristics Of Partially Saturated Unconsolidated Sediments, Jie Shen Jan 2015

Seismic Velocity Characteristics Of Partially Saturated Unconsolidated Sediments, Jie Shen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Seismic velocity models of the near-surface (< 30 m) better explain seismic velocities when all elements of total effective stress are considered, particularly in materials with large cohesive and soil suction stress such as clays. Traditional constitutive elastic models assume interparticle and soil suction stresses are negligible. This study proposes a new methodology which corrects total effective stress in Hertz-Mindlin theory for interparticle and soil suction and calculates the elastic moduli by extending Biot-Gassmann theory to include pressure effects induced by water saturation changes and cohesion. The proposed model predicts seismic velocities that correlate well with measured field velocities from the literature. Soil density, porosity, elastic moduli and the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) are important properties for soil characterization. Currently, geotechnical and laboratory tests for soil properties are costly and limited to point sampling sites. Seismic surveys can potentially provide laterally continuous soil property values that may complement geotechnical borehole tests with low cost. We propose a new method to invert for soil properties and the SWCC from seismic P- and S-wave velocity-vs.-depth profiles interpreted from shallow (< 25 m depth) unconsolidated sediments under conditions of near-full saturation (> 99%). The results from seismic soil property inversion are validated by comparison to geotechnical and laboratory results conducted independently in the same area as the seismic survey. Knowledge of homogeneous and heterogeneous fluid-distribution patterns is important for the estimation of oil reserves, reservoir simulation, the interpretation of time-lapse seismic, and the selection of remediation techniques for groundwater contamination. Problems exist in determining in-situ fluid-distribution patterns in unconsolidated sediments because laboratory tests on core samples may not be representative of in-situ conditions. We propose a new method to determine in-situ fluid-distribution patterns by inverting …

Selective Enrichment Through Capture (Sec): A Technology For Retrieving Specific Dna Sequences From Complex Mixtures, Kelley Gwin Nunez Jan 2015

Selective Enrichment Through Capture (Sec): A Technology For Retrieving Specific Dna Sequences From Complex Mixtures, Kelley Gwin Nunez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The capacity to selectively target DNA sequences within a complex mixture is a useful feature for genomic studies. Several methods aimed at undertaking this feat have utilized biotinylated oligonucleotides and streptavidin beads to capture DNA but have low efficiencies, require PCR, or cannot be combined with high-throughput sequencing. The work presented here developed a protocol referred to as selected enrichment through capture (SEC) that uses a biotinylated “capture primer” to target and concentrate specific DNA sequences at high efficiencies, eliminates the use of PCR, and can be combined with high-throughput sequencing. The effectiveness of SEC was evaluated in a series …
