Hi neighbor,

I lost empathy when I was young and have since spent my time searching for it. Empathy is a capacity that is messy and unnatural; it is a pain in the ass for us selfish folks. My search for it began in high school. Later, in a college literature class, I rediscovered my infatuation for empathy when I read Leslie Jamison’s “The Empathy Exams.”

“This was the double blade of how I felt about any thing that hurt: I wanted someone else to feel it with me, and also I wanted it entirely for myself.”

Considering you and …

It is in our nature as humans to assume that weakness, in its most literal form, insinuates disadvantage or fault; almost instinctively, our minds seem to formulate the dichotomy between weakness and strength.

We each have our own intellectual, physical and emotional attributes that define our personal singularity. Varying connotations of the word “weak” stand as one such example of our uniqueness and variety, yet despite these different interpretations, we all experience weakness in one way or another.

In this issue of Klipsun, you’ll read that for some, weakness is indulging in our guiltiest pleasures – which may mean secretly …

On Nov. 4, as the Klipsun staff worked diligently to publish this issue, our attentions were diverted. We witnessed history unfold as Americans voted in their first African-American president.

Despite our personal opinions or the boxes we marked on our ballots, the Klipsun newsroom watched as many parts of the country were seized by an uprising of emotion, passion and action. More than ever before, young Americans, our generation, made their voices heard. We rocked the vote!

For America, I believe this election was like coming up for fresh air.

During the past eight years our patriotism has been tested. …

I read somewhere how the greatest gift in life is having the serenity to accept the things you cannot change, the courage to change the things you can, and, most importantly, the wisdom to know the difference.

Granted, it's easier said than done, but in life we do make choices, and each one is part of a bigger picture. Therefore, make each choice with courage and conviction — without looking back.

You never know where your choices will lead you. They could direct you to a career in glass blowing, into the depths of the sea in a submarine, or …

When we selected this issue’s theme in November, the topics on all our minds were the election and ensuing political issues. We found ourselves so passionately talking about certain topics that we felt we had no other choice than to publish these controversial topics in Klipsun. Some people on the Klipsun staff expressed concerns about publishing a political issue so long after the election. We decided, however, that just because the election was over didn’t mean we had forgotten the issues.

Politics are personal. They affect our everyday lives, from paying taxes to checking out library books, and they affect …

The cover of Klipsun magazine has a legacy including but not limited to cartoon characters, school administrators, clowns, cars, peculiar folks and tulips. This issue, it seems our subject matter has taken a serious turn. Ann Yow, our photo advisor, best summed it up after she saw the image of illegal activity emblazoned on our computer screen.

Trying to breathe evenly she said, “This isn’t tulips.”

Klipsun is your campus magazine. It isn’t about tulips or heroin. It’s about you.

The editors of this quarter’s Klipsun struggled with the decision to use the arresting cover photo. We feel that hard-to-swallow …

So, how about that cover shot?

As soon as we saw Matt’s picture, we knew it had to go on the cover. That’s the nature of journalism: the most compelling shot often gets the most prominent display.

In running this picture on the cover, Klipsun neither condones nor condemns the use of LSD. “No Longer a Sixties Drug?” is not intended to promote drug use, but rather to tell a story about Western students and their views on the drug.

And how about them nudists?

Nicci, in search of the naked truth, decided to pursue this story. “Great!” we thought. …
