There is insufficient information to guide development of multiple paddock grazing systems. Measuring vegetation responses to grazing period/recovery period intervals is prohibitively expensive when using most grazing research designs. Nested paddock designs reduce land area, number of herds, and number of paddocks needed for comparisons. Nested paddocks permit comparisons of animal performance among whole pasture treatments but comparisons are limited for animal performance differences among grazing/recovery period lengths. Nonetheless, nested paddock designs efficiently document vegetation responses to grazing intervals, which may permit predictions of animal performance.

Paddock means of pasture yield and composition can be inadequate or even misleading due to the spatial variability within pastures. The use of visual estimation procedures, particularly the BOTANAL technique, provides data suitable for analysing variability as many quadrats are sampled within the one paddock. Examples show how data from routine BOTANAL samplings can reveal small and paddock scale spatial variation, and how BOTANAL data can be used to examine relationships between the yield of legume and grass in a mixed pasture grazed at different stocking rates.

An on-farm pilot project was initiated in the Andean piedmont of the Amazon basin in Caquetá, Colombia to determine the contribution of the forage peanut Arachis pintoi (CIAT 17434) introduced in degraded pastures to animal production and soil improvement. Early results show that milk production in dual purpose cattle farms can be increased by 20% with A. pintoi-based pastures. However, to enhance adoption of the legume by farmers there is a need to make adjustments on pasture management and assure supply of high quality seed in the region.

Results on the botanical composition of timothy and meadow fescue from 14 field trials in south and central Sweden are presented. Each trial had three years of ley. Treatments were two or three harvests a year, and 0, 100 or 200 kg ha-1 nitrogen per season. Three seed mixtures were used: a mixture of timothy and meadow fescue, and either lucerne or red clover mixed with timothy and meadow fescue. The results show that there is a significant correlation between harvesting system and nitrogen application on the percentage of timothy and meadow fescue. The effect of ladino clover mixture with some grasses on DM production, botanical composition and seasonal nitrogen fixation activity was examined under field conditions in two consecutive years. Treatment consisted of a clover mixture with four grasses and a reference crop which was grass grown alone. DM production of second year Perennial ryegrass, Tall fescue plus clover mixture was greater than plot growing grasses but almost the same as Timothy and Orchardgrass both with and without clover. The effect of the animal on the pasture and their reverse consequence was studied on two replicated areas of 0.27 and 0.18 ha in a grasslegume sward established in a poorly humid drained soil in the Brazilian Cerrado. The A. pintoi BRA-031143 and P. atratum BRA- 009610 sward was evaluated during four consecutive years under two grazing pressures (GP). The imposed GP affected the botanical composition and pasture availability. Mean live weight gain/animal/ day under the two imposed GP varied from 387+17g, 578+68g, 697+35g and 687+123g between the 1992/93 and 1995/96 rainy seasons. The influence of different cutting frequencies and fertilization on dry matter yield, botanical composition, nutrient concentration and fermentation quality of grass silage was investigated. Altogether four treatments were compared; two 5-cut-treatnents with two different fertilizer levels, one 3-cut-treatment with fertilizer and one 2-cuttreatment without fertilizer. In the 5-cut-treatments the double fertilizer amount produced a 10% higher dry matter yield and also a higher proportion of grasses. The fermentation quality of these silages was mostly good, especially in autumn when the high nitrate content improved the quality. The objectives of this study were to find out if lighter machines with less number of wheel-passes are favourable for harvesting grassland under wet conditions. A field trial on an ecological experimental farm in Norway was performed with two different mechanization systems. The effects of N and P fertilization on the productive and qualitative characteristics of improved pastures in inside Southern Italy areas were investigated. The trial was carried out in two sites characterized by different altitude above sea level and soil properties; also previous fertilization treatments and botanical composition characteristics are significantly different. The N fertilization reduced negative effects of climatic variations (typical of these areas) on botanical composition of “Bella” grassland at lower altitude. The following study investigates the accuracy and practicality of exploiting the color dichotomy present between C3 and C4 grass species to estimate their respective proportions from drone or camera captured imagery. Understanding the proportions of C3 and C4 grasses in pastures is vital to sound decision making for livestock production. Legume-grass mixtures may be a useful alternative to nitrogen-fertilized grass monocultures, but pasture and animal responses have not been assessed for pastures grazed by horses in Florida. This 2-yr study compared pasture and horse responses of continuously stocked, mixed pastures of rhizoma peanut (RP, Arachis glabrata Benth) and bahiagrass (BG, Paspalum notatum Flüggé) receiving 30 kg nitrogen (N)/ha (RP-BG) compared with BG pastures fertilized with 120 kg/N ha (BG-N) or with no N (BG-No N). Kentucky boasts over 30,000 horse farms that house over 200,000 horses. The University of Kentucky Horse Pasture Evaluation Program began in 2005 to assist horse owners and managers in improving pasture quality and quantity. This program collects detailed botanical composition and tall fescue analysis to provide horse owners and managers with a comprehensive picture of pasture composition and field by field recommendations on management practices that will improve each pasture. Samples of tall fescue are also collected and analysed for endophyte presence and ergovaline concentration to evaluate tall fescue toxicity risk. The primary forage species used by cow-calf producers in grazing systems in Tennessee is tall-fescue. Tall fescue is considered an excellent cool-season perennial forage crop due to its high quality, production, and extended growing season.
