Accounting information systems (AIS) are an extremely important component of accounting and accounting education. The purpose of the current study is to examine the transformation of accounting information systems (AIS) curriculum in the last decade. The motivation for this research comes from the vast advances made in the world of information technology (IT) and information systems (IS). The specific research questions addressed in the current study are: (1) how has AIS curriculum changed in the 18 years since SOX? (2) How has AIS curriculum adjusted in recent years with the emergence of the new hot-button topic big data/data analytics? Overall, …
Investigating The Role Of Protein Phosphatase 2a In The Salt Stress Response In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Daniel J. Dirocco
Investigating The Role Of Protein Phosphatase 2a In The Salt Stress Response In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Daniel J. Dirocco
Honors Theses and Capstones
Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is a ubiquitous enzyme in eukaryotes that regulates a large array of cellular signaling processes. PP2A is composed of three subunits: catalytic C subunit, regulatory B subunit, and scaffolding/regulatory A subunit. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the A subunit has three isoforms - A1, A2, and A3 - that are highly conserved at the protein level, indicating that these proteins may be functionally interchangeable. In comparison to wildtype plants, seedlings with a mutation in the A1 gene have roots with obvious root cell file rotation or twisting under conditions of moderate salt stress. Twisted root cells result …
Tick-Borne Infections In New Hampshire: An Evaluation Of The Diagnostic Process In A Local Patient Population, Katherine Anderson
Tick-Borne Infections In New Hampshire: An Evaluation Of The Diagnostic Process In A Local Patient Population, Katherine Anderson
Honors Theses and Capstones
Overall, approximately 95 percent of reported cases of vector-borne disease were associated with ticks, making these the most medically important group of arthropods in the United States.1 Despite the prevalence of tick-borne infections, the process for the diagnosis of this condition is not well studied. This study aims to analyze data from a pool of 100 patients who underwent testing for tick-borne disease in the same institution in Dover, New Hampshire during the most recent peak tick season of 2019. Information utilized in this study included: patient age, sex, location of testing (inpatient versus outpatient), diagnostic testing methods used …
The Effect Of Gender On Ethical Investing, Delaney J. Housley
The Effect Of Gender On Ethical Investing, Delaney J. Housley
Honors Theses and Capstones
Prior literature related to gender and risk propensity would suggest that females are risk-averse, compassionate, and value ethics over return. This ideology of traditional gender norms stereotypically implies that females may be more likely to engage in ethical investing, as there is inherently less risk in investing in companies with strong corporate social responsibility. On the other hand, males are often portrayed as risk-seeking, competitively motivated, and valuing profits over principle, thus may be more willing to compromise ethics if the ends justify the means. The following paper seeks to investigate this relationship between gender and ethical investing, as examined …

Unless The Lord Build The House, Alicia L. Maimone
Unless The Lord Build The House, Alicia L. Maimone
Honors Theses and Capstones
"Unless the Lord Builds the House" is a work of creative nonfiction about two years of my life as my chronic Lyme disease altered how I had to live and how I thought about my life . There are three major threads that I explore.
The first theme is about losing my old self. There was an old Alicia and a new Alicia, and I explore my frustration at losing the old Alicia. I explore this by talking about building. I see myself as a house under renovation, and I write about my struggle to let go of my past …

“C1orf150”: A Novel Regulator Of Jak2 Kinase, And Candidate Tumor Suppressor In Human Blood Cell Progenitors, Tyler M. Wade
Honors Theses and Capstones
Erythropoietin (EPO) is an essential growth factor for red blood cell (RBC) production. In response to anemia, hypoxia-sensing cells in the kidney express and release EPO. EPO then acts in bone marrow to drive RBC formation from erythroid progenitors. Upon binding to its cell surface receptor, EPO triggers a JAK2 kinase signaling cascade for progenitor cell growth. Our lab has discovered a novel regulator of JAK2, “C1ORF150” (“150”). “150” is conserved in H sapiens and primates and is a new orthologue of the B-cell receptor adaptor protein and tumor marker, HGAL. Using a shRNA knockdown approach, I investigated the actions …

Airline Fare Competition In The Post-Merger Era, Parker Michael Armstrong
Airline Fare Competition In The Post-Merger Era, Parker Michael Armstrong
Honors Theses and Capstones
This paper expands on the research of competition within the airline industry. This analysis estimates the fare-impact of new full-service or low-cost competition in city-pair markets in the domestic United States. Given the comprehensive restructuring of the airline industry as a result of the Delta-Northwest, United-Continental, and American-US Airways mergers, this analysis examines how the fare-impact of competition may have changed since the pre-merger era. This paper suggests evidence of a weaker effect regarding the entry of a low-cost carrier and a stronger effect regarding the entry of a legacy carrier in the post-merger era relative to the pre-merger period. …

Atovaquone Targets Stat3 In Ovarian Cancer Spheroids, Kayli E. Neil
Honors Theses and Capstones
Ovarian cancer remains a deadly disease for countless women. Recent evidence demonstrates that ovarian cancer cell clusters, spheroids, are important in promoting ovarian recurrence and metastasis. Often these spheroids are resistant to therapy. Therefore, we were interested in identifying drugs that could target ovarian cancer spheroids. Analysis of gene expression identified the STAT3 signaling pathway as a pathway enriched in 3D growing ovarian cancer cells. STAT3 is a transcription factor that is activated by tyrosine phosphorylation in about 70% of high grade serous ovarian cancers. Using shRNA targeting STAT3 and the upstream signaling molecule, GP130, we found that reduction of …

Examining The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) And Health-Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents In New Hampshire, Riana S. Malik
Honors Theses and Capstones
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic instances in the first 18 years of life including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has outlined priority health-risk behaviors among adolescents as substance use, violent behaviors, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and unsafe sexual behaviors. Previous research has linked both ACEs and health-risk behaviors to negative health outcomes including disability, chronic disease, and substance use. That said, understanding and preventing risky behaviors among adolescents and working to reduce the lasting harm caused by ACEs can lead to healthier adults and communities going forward.
This research defines ACEs …

The Relationship Between Social Media Engagement And Psychological Well-Being In College Students At The University Of New Hampshire, Emily G. D'Antonio
Honors Theses and Capstones
Social media use has increased substantially in recent years, and for the college-aged population, social media is often the leading method of communication. Research indicates this reliance on digital connection could have a negative impact on the health of young adults (Bagroy et al., 2017). The college years are a time of personal growth and defining actions, yet can also be burdened by mental health issues related to stress, anxiety, and depression (Hunt & Eisenberg, 2010). Acknowledging these trends, the current study explores how college students’ specific frequency and intentionality while interacting on social media relates to their psychological well-being. …

An Analysis Of Excise Taxes On Wine In The United States, William A. Saunders
Honors Theses and Capstones
Excise taxes are a form of tax that are applied specifically to certain goods, and are charged by the wholesaler to the retailer; they are then usually passed onto the consumer through price increases. Throughout the history of the United States, this form of taxation has transformed and taken on a variety of different roles before arriving at its modern role; a tool to implement certain tax systems, such as the Pigovian system, as well as to influence consumer behavior. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the purpose of excise taxes on wine within the United States by …
Searching For The Common Suprathermal Power Law Tail In Parker Solar Probe's Isois Data, Asher S. Merrill
Searching For The Common Suprathermal Power Law Tail In Parker Solar Probe's Isois Data, Asher S. Merrill
Honors Theses and Capstones
Results from the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and the Ulysses spacecraft suggested the existence of a pervasive power-law spectrum of suprathermal ions in the solar wind with a spectral index of -3/2. This distribution is of particular interest to humanity because the suprathermal ions it describes can serve as the seed population for large, destructive events that can harm ground- and air-based equipment. It has been suggested that various statistical mechanisms can produce the observed spectrum, however the underlying physical phenomena are not yet known. The spectrum of suprathermal ions is relatively unstudied closer to the Sun than 1 au. …
Buddhist Approaches To Environmentalism And Food Insecurity, Grace N. Stott
Buddhist Approaches To Environmentalism And Food Insecurity, Grace N. Stott
Honors Theses and Capstones
Buddhism is a religion deep-rooted in history, most prevalent in Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. 3 These countries are “developing countries” and may not have the necessary infrastructure to succeed economically and have increased health risks, one of which is food insecurity.4 With climate change an increased threat, these areas of the world are more susceptible to environmental problems. The Buddhism religion strongly values sustainability, in both the environment and food insecurity. It values helping others, both humans and nature. Despite the adversity they face, Buddhists have dealt better than communities in similar situations of poverty and …
Identifying Rpa-Dependent Epigenetic Modifications Influencing Arabidopsis Thaliana Flowering Time, Emily S. Berry
Identifying Rpa-Dependent Epigenetic Modifications Influencing Arabidopsis Thaliana Flowering Time, Emily S. Berry
Honors Theses and Capstones
Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes that do not directly alter the DNA sequence. Many of these inheritance mechanisms are caused by the addition of a methyl group to cytosine nucleotides in DNA that prevent gene expression. The model organism Arabidopsis thaliana (abbreviated A. thaliana) is commonly used in genetic experiments, and its usefulness is extended to research in epigenetics. Our current research (Culligan lab), in part, focuses on genes involved in DNA damage and repair, such as brca2 and the rpa1a/b/c/d/e genes. Previous genetic analyses suggests that the rpa1c/e double-mutant typically expresses an early flowering phenotype despite …
