The Photorefractive Effect In Batio3, Tom Savard
The Photorefractive Effect In Batio3, Tom Savard
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
The photorefractive effect was observed in a sample of BaTiO, crystal. In two-beam coupling experiments, the crystal failed to amplify the signal beam even though experimental configurations that provided other researchers with large gains were used. However, beam fanning, a two-beam coupling effect, was observed. The unmeasurable gain of our crystal in twc-beam coupling experiments might be due to multiple domains in the crystal or competition between hole and electron charge carriers. In addition, a self-pumped phase conjugate mirror was made using the "cat" configuration. The formation of the phase conjugate mirror in the crystal was observed using the image …
Interaction Of Hemispheric Brain Dominance And Treatment Type On Lowering The Frontalis Muscle Tension In College Students, Lynda S. Haag
Interaction Of Hemispheric Brain Dominance And Treatment Type On Lowering The Frontalis Muscle Tension In College Students, Lynda S. Haag
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
It was hypothesized that a combination of imagery and biofeedback would be more effective in reducing frontalis muscle tension than either imagery or biofeedback alone. Also, because spatial and artistic abilities are often attributed to right-brain strategies, it was hypothesized that subjects who use a "right-brained cognitive style would be more successful using guided imagery than subjects who use a "left-brained" cognitive style. Subjects were 12 college students, six "right-brained and six "left-brained" as determined by a hemispheric strategy questionnaire. Each subject received imagery, biofeedback or both for 6 nonconsecutive days.
A Meta-Analysis Of Sibling Sex Ratio And Sexual Orientation, Naomi Irene Gribneau
A Meta-Analysis Of Sibling Sex Ratio And Sexual Orientation, Naomi Irene Gribneau
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
In the past, several researchers have commented on a disproportionate number of brothers in the siblings of their (generally male) homosexual subjects. Conflicting data has also been presented, and the question remains unresolved. This paper explores the relationship of sexual orientation and sibling sex ratio through a meta-analysis of eighteen previously published studies from 1940 through 1982. A recent survey of adult heterosexual women provides more data, resulting in final sample sizes of 5553 homosexual male subjects, 1100 heterosexual male subjects, 445 homosexual female subjects, 436 female heterosexual subjects and 1880 male controls (sexual orientation undetermined). It was found that …

The Probabilities Associated With The Game Jai-Alai, Robert Hesse
The Probabilities Associated With The Game Jai-Alai, Robert Hesse
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This paper studies the probabilities within the game Jai-alai. Before explaining the probabilities, one first needs to understand the game itself. Jai-alai is a racquetball-like game where eight ordered players compete against one another in the following manner: Player 1 plays Player 2. The winner of this game plays Player 3, while the loser goes to the end of the line behind Player 8. In the first seven games, 1 versus 2," versus 3,"""? versus 8, the winner is awarded one point, and in every game after that two points. A player wins the match when he is the first …
The Unification Of Germany: A General Disequalibrium With Labor Migration, Geraint Powell
The Unification Of Germany: A General Disequalibrium With Labor Migration, Geraint Powell
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Among the many effects of German unification, there will be a disequilibrium in the labor market. The disequilibrium is a result of forty years of different economic systems. In East Germany, a relatively large percentage of the labor force is expected to become unemployed in the next year as compared to West Germany. The high rates of unemployment in the east compared to the west mean an excess supply of labor. There are reasons to expect both changes in the equilibrium wage, as well as migration from east to west. The purpose of the paper is to describe the process …

The Quantum Magneto Effect Of Bismuth, Omar Kerem Durdag
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Using a standard field modulation technique, the de Haas-van Alphen effect was measured in bismuth for various crystal orientations. Measurements performed using a d.c. magnetic field that was ramped up from -0.05 T to -0.6 T at 4.2 K with a w.01 T modulating field. Data shows a variation of dHvA period with orientation that is in good agreement with the results of Bhargava'.

Modeling Radon Transport And Entry, Michael John Bergmann
Modeling Radon Transport And Entry, Michael John Bergmann
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Techniques and devices for measuring the emanation power and permeabdity of soil samples are developed. A Monte Carlo simulation is used to model the transport of radon to 112 basements in Minnesota. Correlation between this model and the measured indoor radon concentration is compared to other leading models' correlations. This model has been found to have the strongest correlation.
