Saving Socrates: A New Socratic Portrait, Anthony Lobrace Jun 2016

Saving Socrates: A New Socratic Portrait, Anthony Lobrace

Honors Theses

In 399 B.C. Socrates was indicted on charges of asebeia, or impiety and corrupting the youth. He was brought before a jury of some 500 Athenians in a type of trial known as agon timetos, or “trial of assessment”. Casting their votes, the vast majority of the jurors found Socrates guilty of the offenses he was accused of. A week later he drank a cup of hemlock and died in his prison cell. In what follows I will draw a new portrait of Socrates. This will be constructed from details found in Aristophanes’ the Clouds, as well as Socratic dialogues. …

Modeling Pulsar Trajectories Through A Galatic Potential To Determine Birth Locations, Brent Shapiro-Albert Jun 2016

Modeling Pulsar Trajectories Through A Galatic Potential To Determine Birth Locations, Brent Shapiro-Albert

Honors Theses

Neutron stars are the remnants of massive stars after their deaths in supernova explosions. Some neutron stars, called pulsars, are detected as periodic emitters of radio waves at very precise intervals. Pulsars typically have higher velocities than their progenitor stellar population due to either kicks from supernova asymmetries or from remnant velocities of compact binaries after they are disrupted by explosions. Their velocities are large enough that pulsars will typically move large distances from their birth sites. By determining a pulsar's present day location and velocity, we project back to twice the pulsar's characteristic age to constrain the location of …

Information Encoded By Dragonfly Visual Neurons Mdt3 And Dit3 In Response To Looming Stimuli, Cara Slugaski Jun 2016

Information Encoded By Dragonfly Visual Neurons Mdt3 And Dit3 In Response To Looming Stimuli, Cara Slugaski

Honors Theses

The Target Selective Descending Neurons (TSDNs) DIT3 and MDT3 in the Aeshnid dragonfly have been shown to respond best to expanding visual stimuli that appear to be approaching, also called looming stimuli. The ratio between the length of the object (L) and the absolute approach velocity (V) completely determines the time course of angular expansion of the object’s image. This study investigated how these neurons responded to the change in expansion of the stimuli, along with which properties of the looming stimuli (target angle, angular expansion rate, or angular acceleration) excite DIT3 and MDT3, respectively. In this experiment, we dissected …

Yellow Window Into The Soul: Creative Explorations Of Surrealism, Elora Weil Jun 2016

Yellow Window Into The Soul: Creative Explorations Of Surrealism, Elora Weil

Honors Theses

My thesis is a collection of surrealist short stories. The inspiration for my thesis came from Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis, published in 1915. I drew the majority of my inspiration from the concept of making a normal situation completely abnormal. My stories range from horrifying to humorous to historical fiction, but all are tied together by their surreal elements. I tend to end my stories on cliffhangers, which are intended to leave the reader pondering what it is that they have just read. Two examples of my stories are, “The Girl With Kaleidoscope Pupils” and “Har Har Ganga.” “The Girl With …

In And Out Line Monitoring System For Volleyball, Kelley White Jun 2016

In And Out Line Monitoring System For Volleyball, Kelley White

Honors Theses

The main goal of this project is to create a line monitoring system for volleyball to aid the line judges in their decision making as well as reduce the frequently misjudged calls. Line calling systems have already been implicated into other sports but there is not one yet for volleyball. This is because volleyball must move on to the next point in a matter of seconds or a delay of game is called against a team. Therefore, there needs to be a system that calls a ball without the need of a replay. The in and out line monitoring system …

Japanese Neet And Freeter: A Representation Of The Relationship Between Social Changes And Youth's Employment Pattern, Linh Hoang Jun 2016

Japanese Neet And Freeter: A Representation Of The Relationship Between Social Changes And Youth's Employment Pattern, Linh Hoang

Honors Theses

My paper attempts to analyze the existence of NEET (No Employment, Education or Training – ニート) and Freeter (Freelancing part-time worker - フリーター), two common groups of young unemployed people and irregular workers in Japan. Throughout the study, the relationship between Japanese social changes, modernization process and Japanese NEETs and Freeters is thoroughly examined. The first social change related to the establishment of these two groups is the transformation of employment system. The combination of a seniority-based system and performance-based system as well as their contrasts has increased the competitiveness in the job seeking war while eliminating some of the …

The German Rocket Jet And The Nuclear Programs Of World War Ii, Max Lutze Jun 2016

The German Rocket Jet And The Nuclear Programs Of World War Ii, Max Lutze

Honors Theses

German military technology in World War II was among the best of the major warring powers and in many cases it was the groundwork for postwar innovations that permanently changed global warfare. Three of the most important projects undertaken, which were not only German initiatives and therefore perhaps among the most valuable programs for both the major Axis and Allied nations, include the rocket, jet, and nuclear programs. In Germany, each of these technologies was given different levels of attention and met with varying degrees of success in their development and application. By the end of the war, both rockets …

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Care Choices, a new in-home palliative care program provided by the Visiting Nurse Services of Northeastern New York and Ellis Medicine, a community healthcare system serving New York’s Capital District. Design: A prospective cohort study tracking patient outcomes over the course of one year. Subjects and setting: One hundred twenty-three patients (49 men, 74 women) with serious illnesses who were new enrollees in Care …

Perceiving The Reality Of Time, Leslie M. Murray Apr 2016

Perceiving The Reality Of Time, Leslie M. Murray

Honors Theses

The careful consideration of human perception through our lived experience reveals that time is something real. We perceive the reality of time through the nature of our “being” and how beings themselves are intricately connected to one another through temporal and special relationships. Perceiving time as experientially real is fundamental to the reality we experience. Hence, the fabric of space and all things; past, present, and future must be included as the foundational prerequisite form of all reality itself if we are to generate a theory of reality at all. By using our perception to examine both scientific and metaphysical …
