Although novels hold a secure, unquestioned place in twentieth century culture, they have not always claimed such a position. The novel, as everything else, had to have its beginning sometime, and, for this genre, that 'sometime' was the eighteenth century.

Arkansas, unlike some slave holding states, was never the scene for actual mass uprisings or armed revolts by slaves. Actual acts of resistance and rumors of insurrections did occur in the state. The universal fear of insurrection that was present throughout the South also plagued the mind of the Arkansas slave owner. The fear was not new; since the beginning of slavery, the fear was present and as early as 1672, fear was expressed by the colonists of a slave uprising. Part of the fear was stemmed from conditions of slavery in Arkansas that were inducible to slave unrest.

The struggle for woman suffrage in Arkansas and the entire United States did not end until the twentieth century. It was a long and difficult process but in 1917 with the passage of the Arkansas Primary Suffrage Bill, Arkansas women were allowed to vote in primaries. Then, in 1920 they were given full suffrage rights through the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. In order for these events to occur, women's traditional role had to change in Arkansas and the nation, and it had to be accepted by both men and women. Solid phase peptide synthesis is a relatively new biochemical process for polymerization of amino acids. It involves the selection of amino acids, blocking groups, and resins. This procedure was first investigated by R. B. Merrifield in an attempt to simplify previous methods of peptide synthesis. Since other methods involved amino acids, peptide esters, and diketopiperazines, peptide synthesis had been limited by amino acid selection and a host of technical problems. Solid phase synthesis alleviates many of these difficulties and limitations by supplying a faster and simpler stepwise addition of a wide variety of naturally occurring and synthetically prepared amino acids …

Anencephaly and spina bifida cystica are two of the most common severe congenital malformations consistently observed in human populations. Both represent defects in the neural tube and share a significant number of similar epidemiological associations among them, occupational class, geography, sex ratio, maternal age, year and season of the year. In anencephaly most of the brain and upper skull never form usually resulting in death within a few hours of birth. Spina bifida cystica is a malformation of the spinal cord often causing paralysis, vulnerability to infection, and early death. In 1972, Dr. J.H. Renwick presented a controversial hypothesis which …

Spectral Studies Of Esters Of 9 And 1 Anthroic Acid, Robert Fisch

A comparison was made between spectral properties of several atomatic esters of 9- anthroic acid (9- COOAR) and the methyl ester (9-COOMe). The spectral properties observed were absorption spectra, fluorescence quantum yields (Øf) and Stokes shifts. Although all of the ester absorption spectra showed anthracene-like structure, the aromatic ester spectra were clearly more diffuse than the 9-COOMe spectrum. Certain electron delocalization pathways are available to 9-COOAR but not to 9-COOMe, thereby allowing greater carboxyl group-ring interaction for 9-COOAR, resulting in increased spectral diffuseness relative to 9-COOMe. Data are presented which show that the electronic absorption spectra of these esters are …

Many aldehydes, ketones and other carbonyl-containing compounds react with 1, 2-ethanedithol to give highly stable cyclic thioacetals or thioketals. The problem lies in recovering the substituted 1, 3-dithiolanes to the carbonyl compound without altering the other substituents of the molecule. We propose a new direct method of exchange with formaldehyde to reconvert the 1, 3-dithiolane to the carbonyl compound. This was accomplished with 2, 2-diethyl-l, 3-dithiolane. Also, a mechanism is proposed involving the formation of a sulfonium ion intermediate. In preparation for the exchange study seven 1, 3-dithiolanes were synthesized.

Previous studies have shown that substitution of a single carboxyl group on the anthracene ring produces fluorescent quantum yields (Øf) and Stokes shifts that are highly solvent dependent. The effects of solvents on the spectral properties of anthracene-9, 10-dicarboxylic acid (9, 10-(COOH) 2) which has symmetrically distributed carboxyl groups, was studied. Theory: Insects are generally sensitivity to light of any wave-length. Some insects' reactions are due to the response of specialized epidermal cells whereas the center of most response is in the compound eye. The reaction is generally thought to be due to an electro-chemical reaction within the light sensitive cells of the compound eye, i.e. mainly the cells of the crystalline cone and the rhabdomere. The Schmidt Site (20 SA 192) is located in Saginaw County, south of the Cass River and just east of the Grand Trunk Railroad in the NE 1/4, sec. 19, T 11 N, R 4 E, of the Bridgeport Township (figs. 1, 2, 3). The area is a remnant of a glacial lake bottom. There is very little local relief.
