Visions Of The Amistad: American Public Engagement With The Amistad Story, Samuel Perkins Dec 2014

Visions Of The Amistad: American Public Engagement With The Amistad Story, Samuel Perkins

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Steven Spielberg’s movie Amistad, released in 1997, is considered to be a good movie. The New York Times published a very favorable review of the film when it came out stating that it provides “tough, sobering depictions of the captives’ ordeal.” It has all of the ingredients of a great historical motion picture; it is interesting, exciting at times, and educational. Amistad is a go to film for many high school history teachers to begin discussion on the Amistad case. While the movie follows the movements of high profile characters from the Amistad story such as Martin Van Buren, Cinque, …

Elliptic Curve Cryptography, Kerrie Pratt Dec 2014

Elliptic Curve Cryptography, Kerrie Pratt

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In the present day, security is essential for sending and receiving information. There are always stories about bank accounts being hacked, credit card numbers being stolen, and secret information being decoded. With the technology of the Internet age growing at a rapid pace, security is essential to keep privileged information safe. In order to ensure this information is kept private, so that information can be sent and received without being hacked and decoded, organizations employ different types of encryption. One of the current encoding systems is Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). ECC uses elliptic curves over finite fields to send information …

Music Therapy And Communication Disabilities: Singing, Speech, And The Brain, Jennifer Drake Dec 2014

Music Therapy And Communication Disabilities: Singing, Speech, And The Brain, Jennifer Drake

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Music therapy interventions, especially singing, can aid those with communication disorders to attain and develop verbal and non-verbal communication and language skills, as well as functional social skills. Throughout my own interactions with those with communication impairments, I have witnessed many individuals who struggle with typical speech, but are better able to communicate when music is involved. For instance, a young boy with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) who does not typically speak independently or when prompted is able to sing every word to familiar songs on the radio that he enjoys. Such evidence of the positive effect that music can …

Deriving The Dyer-Roeder Equation From The Geodesic Deviation Equation Via The Newman Penrose Null Tetrad, Aly Aly Dec 2014

Deriving The Dyer-Roeder Equation From The Geodesic Deviation Equation Via The Newman Penrose Null Tetrad, Aly Aly

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In this paper we examine the geodesic deviation equation using the Newman-Penrose (N-P) formalism for a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric (Carroll, S. (2004); Ryden, B. (2003); Newman & Penrose (1962)). We solved the geodesic deviation equation for angular diameter distance, using the relevant N-P components, and the resulting expression was the Dyer-Roeder equation of cosmology (Ryden, B. (2003)) (Schneider et al. (1992)). This leads us to believe that we can apply the N-P formalism to a perturbed FLRW metric and find a solvable equation for angular diameter distance (Kling & Campbell (2008)). The perturbed FLRW metric incorporates clumps of matter …

Transfer Of Arabic Grammatical Knowledge To Spanish Subject-Verb Agreement, Jennifer Herzog Dec 2014

Transfer Of Arabic Grammatical Knowledge To Spanish Subject-Verb Agreement, Jennifer Herzog

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In the field of second language acquisition (SLA), research has shown that one’s first language (L1) has proven to positively and negatively transfer to one’s second language (L2). A possible area of transfer is subject-verb agreement. Transfer becomes much more difficult when two languages utilize different writing scripts. What remains unknown, and what the present study aims to determine is if transfer of subject-verb agreement can occur between two languages that use different writing scripts. This study examines five L1 Arabic/English participants in their acquisition of Spanish subject-verb agreement by recording their reaction time for reading Spanish sentences with subject-verb …

Jane Austen And The 21st-Century Classroom, Maureen Jecrois Dec 2014

Jane Austen And The 21st-Century Classroom, Maureen Jecrois

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Across the United States, educators and administrators have been discussing whether classical literature still has a place within the high school classroom. Included in this discussion are the works of Jane Austen. And while Jane Austen’s texts have much to offer as far as discussion on gender and familial dynamics, economic and political tension, and, of course, societal norms (what our communities expect from us individually and as a whole), the texts present many challenges within the frameworks of today’s classroom. What we have come to know as “our” time is a rapidly changing environment filled with experiences and technologies …

A Statistical Analysis Of The Role Of Critical-Thinking Games In College Students' Quantitative Reasoning, Melissa Radevicz

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Improving college students' quantitative reasoning is crucial to increase STEM-field retention rates. The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), results indicate that "college students don't always get exposure to activities that develop [quantitative reasoning]" (Berrett & Sander, 2013). This study aimed to engage college students in quantitative reasoning through critical-thinking games. Phase 1, conducted in summer 2014 with a university research grant, involved a correlation analysis of the work of 133 college students enrolled in Elementary Statistics I, Chemical Principles II, Elements of Calculus, Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry, Multivariable Calculus, and Differential Equations. Participants held a variety of 39 different majors, …

Civil Unrest And Collective Violence In France: A Historical Comparative Analysis, Kenneth Arsenault Dec 2014

Civil Unrest And Collective Violence In France: A Historical Comparative Analysis, Kenneth Arsenault

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Civil unrest as a precursor for collective violence to erupt is analyzed using historic events in France. The theoretical background for collective violence is outlined, along with a discussion of the origin of crowd behavior by Le Bon. By analyzing historic events in a single country, the variable of differing cultural contexts is eliminated. Four cases of events that led to collective violence ranging across time from the late 18th century to the late 20th century are analyzed in detail to determine the causal mechanisms that led the crowds to become violent. A comparison of the cases leads to a …

The Past Is Present: Exploring Methods Of Cooperation Between Archaeologists, Native Americans, And Museums In Southern New England, Mckayla Hoffman

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Homo sapiens sapiens is arguably one of the most fascinating and complex species that has ever existed on Earth. On the surface, we appear to be highly diversified, and we interpret the world around us in a variety of ways. These interpretations shape the way that we live our lives on this planet, and inform our wide array of kinship patterns, marriage ceremonies, languages, religious beliefs, and more. However, for all of these differences, we are the same at our core: we contain relatively the same DNA, and might generally share similar goals and aspirations for ourselves and those we …

Making The Dough And Knowing How To Spend It: Students' Understanding Of Personal Finance, Anthony Bazile May 2014

Making The Dough And Knowing How To Spend It: Students' Understanding Of Personal Finance, Anthony Bazile

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This paper will explore the responsiveness Bridgewater State University (BSU) students have to the implementation of a personal finance course as part of a graduation requirement for every student. The National Financial Capability Study showed that most young people, 18-34 years old, scored the lowest in a basic financial literacy test. The aim of this paper is to analyze where BSU students stand on financial education while gauging how open students are to take personal finance courses offered on campus. In order to do so; the paper will analyze the students’ financial knowledge, attitudes and other influences to grasp what …

Using The Objectification Theory Framework To Assess The Unique Body Image Concerns Of Women Experiencing Homelessness, Melanie K. Mitchell May 2014

Using The Objectification Theory Framework To Assess The Unique Body Image Concerns Of Women Experiencing Homelessness, Melanie K. Mitchell

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The primary objective of this research is to explore the unique body image concerns of women experiencing homelessness, an understudied population in body image research. The hypothesis is that women who are currently homeless and who have experienced longer periods of homelessness will be more likely to have poorer body image. Homeless women may not possess the means to modify their appearance with hygiene products or facilities (Hoffman & Coffey, 2008). Also, an inconsistent food source may influence some women to binge when food is available, or to eat unhealthy foods that result in weight gain (Bove & Olsen, 2006). …

Chain Of Command: The Barriers Of Reporting Sexual Assault In The Military, Danielle Christenson May 2014

Chain Of Command: The Barriers Of Reporting Sexual Assault In The Military, Danielle Christenson

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Reported rates of sexual assault in the military have increased dramatically over the past 10 years (Groves, 2013). One reason for the pervasiveness of sexual assault is the reporting structure. Despite changes in the way sexual assault complaints are handled, there continue to be numerous sexual assault scandals (Childress, 2013). The purpose of this study is to examine how the military’s chain of command influences the reporting procedures, and how this may influence the military’s ability to prevent sexual assaults. This thesis examines three case studies specifically focusing on military sexual assault reporting.

The Development Of Body Image In Dancers: Examining Gesture's Role In Conveying Body Image, Valeria Albano May 2014

The Development Of Body Image In Dancers: Examining Gesture's Role In Conveying Body Image, Valeria Albano

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Body image and body dissatisfaction is an issue in western countries. Many females, especially dancers, have been objectified by a cultural stereotype of a thin body and being referred to as “skin and bones”. Recently, body disturbances have been reported in children as young as six years old. Children this young may be unaware that they are expressing these negative thoughts about their bodies and thus, the measures assessing body image are challenging to analyze. Another line of research has shown that children spontaneously produce hand gestures when narrating stories, solving math problems, or explaining scientific ideas. Moreover, children convey …

Relation Of Personality Traits To Cognitive Impairments And Disease Severity In Parkinson's Disease, Lindsey Clark May 2014

Relation Of Personality Traits To Cognitive Impairments And Disease Severity In Parkinson's Disease, Lindsey Clark

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder with a prevalence rate ranging from 31 to 201 per 100,000 individuals. PD primarily affects individuals over the age of 65 years. Recently, researchers have recognized the importance that cognitive and other non-motor type deficits play in the lives of PD patients. Some speculate that PD patients even exhibit changes in certain personality traits. It is currently unclear, however, how these personality traits might relate to cognitive deficits and even disease severity. The current study examined this issue by administering a personality assessment and several cognitive (frontal-lobe) assessments to 27 …

Graphic Designers And Brain Surgeons, Both Highly Trained, Yet Not Interchangeable: The Creation Of Promotion Materials For Springfest 2014, Alanna Mehrtens

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Graphic design and brain surgery. What do they have in common? Each person is trained in their profession. Each person is called upon for services that are needed for a specific reason. Common sense tells you to not perform brain surgery without the proper training. Why would that be any different for Graphic Design? Whereas most people would never attempt brain surgery, the average person seems more than willing to attempt creating Graphic Design, usually with poor results. Event branding is an example of where training in this profession is most beneficial. I was the Graphic Designer in charge of …

The Construction Of Ethnoreligious Identity Groups In Syria: Loyalties And Tensions In The Syrian Civil War, Eliott Rousseau May 2014

The Construction Of Ethnoreligious Identity Groups In Syria: Loyalties And Tensions In The Syrian Civil War, Eliott Rousseau

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The ongoing civil war in Syria is characterized by its inherent complexity, often leaving non-Syrian onlookers and geopolitical stakeholders confused and fatigued. In a war with such a high human toll—refugees hemorrhaging from Syria’s borders, the death toll ever-climbing, and a generation of children growing up with the fighting—there is no room for mystification. This research project contextualizes the Syrian Civil War using anthropological concepts of religion and ethnicity. The ways in which religion and ethnicity help construct identity and group loyalty among Syria’s diverse population are examined. In particular, the role of membership in specific identity groups in creating …
