Antagonism Attenuates The Relationship Between Childhood Polyvictimization And Distress In Adulthood, Benjamin D. Carsten

The cumulative effects of childhood polyvictimization, including incremental increases in experiences of childhood maltreatment (CM) types, such as sexual abuse and emotional neglect are associated with an increase in psychological distress. Personality trait domains as measured by the Personality Inventory of the DSM-5, are independently associated with psychological distress, and are thought to moderate the association between traumatic events and distress. The purpose of this study was to determine how listeners judge various attributes of a speaker based upon their perception of the speaker's speaking rate. The characteristics of interest included: intelligence, competence, physical relaxation, emotional relaxation, and employability. Speech samples were recorded for four student volunteers while describing five different pictures using a fast speaking rate, typical speaking rate, and slow speaking rate. The subjects participating in this study were from a large undergraduate class. The recorded audio samples were played to the subjects, and after each recording the subjects answered five questions using a standard scantron. Results indicated that …

This paper aims to answer the question 'how do portrait painters capture a person's personality through painting the expressive qualities of the face?'. The first half of the paper describes the anthropological research, taken from the disciplines of psychology, anthropology, and other social sciences studying perception, physiognomy, and caricature. The second half of the paper analyzes four portraits painted by well-known portraitists to relate the painting with the sitter's character. The findings lie in the application of the information gathered from the anthropological research to the specific portraits being studied.
