When a patient is readmitted within 30 days of discharge, the hospital is required to pay for the hospitalization, and the patient is at risk for poor outcomes. Many factors can increase a patient’s risk for readmission, including culture, fall risk, age, and social factors. Many hospitals have created a system to combat and reduce 30-day readmissions. These methods include assessing patient’s acuity for readmission, using home visits or phone calls, remote monitoring, creating better environments for workers, and more. The results of this literary review emphasize the need to assess patients for their readmission risk and the effectiveness of …

Gender inequity is a rampant social issue in developing countries that permeates many subsets of society such as schools, workplaces, and government positions. Significant research and even entities such as the United Nations have declared empowering coaches and athletes to promote gender equity through youth sport as one way this problem can be remedied (Wright et al., 2016). In line with this, Dr. Jacobs, myself, and six other NIU students spent our spring semester preparing and delivering the Belizeans Advocating for Equity (BAE) Sports Summit, the first women’s sports summit in Belize, a country located in Central America. The summit’s …

The Walk Away Specimen Processor (WASP) is a revolutionary device created to assist microbiologists with efficiency and automation in a clinical setting. The principle of the device is to manually streak a variety of patient specimens onto their predetermined forms of media, then move to individual incubators with digital images taken at varying times. In theory this should improve the turn-around-time (TAT) of laboratory testing as well as the culture yield from these specimens compared to manual preparation. This research will primarily focus on the specimens selected for throat screens, although many different specimen types can be loaded on the …

This project analyzes the affects of trauma and culture change on Cambodian refugees. Extreme culture shock added to the difficulty these refugees had in adapting to life in America.
