Do Generalist-Pollinated Plants Exhibit Pollination Syndromes? Examination Of Floral Size, Shape, Color, And Scent On Pollinator Services To Wild Sunflowers (Helianthus), Charles A. Pitsenberger Ii

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Traditional pollination syndromes group angiosperms into categories based on how floral traits impact the functional group of pollinator most associated with those traits. The concept, while well supported for specialist-pollinated plants, is a poor predictor of pollinator identity in generalist systems, such as those common to the family Asteraceae. One potential avenue for future refinement of the concept is the combination of large floral trait datasets, quantitative pollinator data, and phylogenetic comparative methods. Helianthus is a well-studied genus of North American aster whose species include the agriculturally significant H. annuus, which represents the third largest oilseed crop globally. The genus …

High-Order Harmonic Generation In Bulk And Thin Film Solids, Troie Journigan Jan 2024

High-Order Harmonic Generation In Bulk And Thin Film Solids, Troie Journigan

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

High-order harmonic generation (HHG), a non-perturbative nonlinear light-matter interaction resulting in coherent emission of high-frequency light, has demonstrated promise as an optical probe of carrier dynamics, structural symmetries, and other properties of solids. HHG from bulk solids in transmission geometry, however, is influenced by nonlinear propagation of the driving laser, which leads to spectral skewing and temporal phase variations in the harmonic emission. These effects obscure the microscopic underlying physics, making HHG-based spectroscopy of bulk solids difficult to interpret. HHG in few-to mono-layer materials, however, avoids strong nonlinear propagation effects, and can provide novel material properties for HHG studies.

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Human trafficking within and across nations is a pervasive, insidious global criminal enterprise that endangers human rights and impedes social justice. Sex and labor are two fundamental types of human trafficking, but media and policies prioritize the former. Social work calls for empowering marginalized groups, and labor trafficking survivors—who are more likely women and immigrants of color—certainly fall into this category. Since 2003, every U.S. state has criminalized human trafficking, yet the issue persists. Most human trafficking analyses focus on federal or international, not state, policies.

Thus, this critical analysis aimed to explore how human trafficking is conceptualized at the …
