Development And Validation Of A Measure To Assess Physician Readiness To Prescribe Drug Therapies For Post-Myocardial Infarction Patients, Siddhesh Ajit Kamat Dec 2003

Development And Validation Of A Measure To Assess Physician Readiness To Prescribe Drug Therapies For Post-Myocardial Infarction Patients, Siddhesh Ajit Kamat

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

National guidelines recommend the use of beta-blockers, aspirin, and ACE-inhibitors in the management of post MI patients. These target drug classes continue to be under-prescribed; information on physicians' decision-making process requires attention and behavior change interventions have been proposed. This pilot study uses the Transtheoretical Model of Change; physicians' salience for the pros and cons of prescribing target drug classes constitutes the decisional balance measure, which can be used to predict their stage of readiness. A survey instrument was mailed to a sample of West Virginia physicians and 55 usable responses (34%) were received. Majority of the physicians self-reported in …

Pharmaceutical Quality Performance Of Folic Acid Supplements, Islam Rasem Younis Dec 2003

Pharmaceutical Quality Performance Of Folic Acid Supplements, Islam Rasem Younis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The vitamin folic acid has received considerable attention in the 1990s because of its preventative role against diseases such as neural tube defects, cardiovascular diseases, and psychiatric illness.;A primary concern is the pharmaceutical quality, potency, and efficacy of commercially available folic acid products and label claims. The results showed that there has been significant progress since the 1990's in the improved quality of commercially available folic acid products in meeting USP standards.;Products were also tested in physiologically relevant solutions. Most notably, all the tested products failed to release more than 75% of the active ingredient in 60 minutes in simulated …

Regulation Of P-Glycoprotein And Abcp Transporters, Dhanashri Ramkrishna Kolwankar May 2003

Regulation Of P-Glycoprotein And Abcp Transporters, Dhanashri Ramkrishna Kolwankar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The placenta plays an important role in modulating xenobiotic passage from mother to fetus. Smoking is known to induce cytochrome P450 1Al (CYP1A1) expression in the placenta, however its effect on P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and ABC transporter in placenta (ABCP) levels in placenta is not known. In-vitro studies in hepatocytes have reported induction of P-gp mRNA by some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. To examine whether smoking can affect placental P-gp and ABCP, their expression and activity were determined in placentas from smokers and non-smokers. Uptake of [3H]-vinblastine and [3H]-mitoxantrone was used to measure P-gp and ABCP function, respectively and CYP1A1 activity (positive …

Uterine Uptake Of Diazepam And Quantification By Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, Steven Scott Wolfe May 2003

Uterine Uptake Of Diazepam And Quantification By Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, Steven Scott Wolfe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

One of the difficulties in drug delivery is transporting the compound of interest to the target organ while minimizing exposure to the rest of the body. Intravenous administration is effective in the delivery of drugs and results in high bioavailability leading to very rapid systemic distribution. Oral dosing of drugs is the most popular route because of its ease of administration, but it is subject to first pass metabolism by the liver which can greatly reduce the bioavailability of the parent compound. Patients undergoing hysterectomy were recruited for a study in which they were anesthetized and 5 mg of diazepam …

Economics Of Breast Cancer Preventive Strategies In A Medicaid Program, Rohit D. Borker May 2003

Economics Of Breast Cancer Preventive Strategies In A Medicaid Program, Rohit D. Borker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The primary objective of the study was to estimate the long-term benefits and costs of chemopreventive tamoxifen and mammography screening in women who are otherwise healthy but at high risk of developing breast cancer. Three hypothetical cohorts of high-risk women were initiated at age forty. The first cohort consumed chemopreventive tamoxifen and underwent routine mammography screening. The second cohort also consumed chemopreventive tamoxifen but underwent mammography screening at real-world rates. The third cohort (control cohort) did not consume chemopreventive tamoxifen and underwent mammography screening at real-world rates. The study also assessed the proportion of women in the West Virginia Medicaid …

Evaluating The Cost-Effectiveness Of St. John's Wort Versus Fluoxetine For The Treatment Of Mild To Moderate Depression, Lee Ann Thayer May 2003

Evaluating The Cost-Effectiveness Of St. John's Wort Versus Fluoxetine For The Treatment Of Mild To Moderate Depression, Lee Ann Thayer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The objective of this study was to determine the cost-effectiveness of St. John's Wort compared to fluoxetine from a third party perspective for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. Fluoxetine 20 mg daily was compared to St. John's Wort 300 mg thrice daily in a decision tree modeling depression management in the outpatient setting. Probabilities were obtained from a Medline search as well as input from an expert panel. Direct medical costs were obtained from medical offices in the Connecticut area with drug and herb cost based on 2002 published data. Several sensitivity analyses were performed. The cost-effectiveness ratio …

In-Situ, Near Real-Time Acquisition Of Particle Movement In Rotating Drum Coating Equipment, Sandeepa Sandadi May 2003

In-Situ, Near Real-Time Acquisition Of Particle Movement In Rotating Drum Coating Equipment, Sandeepa Sandadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The uniformity of coating applied to large particles and tablets in rotating-drum coating devices is of significant interest to the Pharmaceutical Industry, especially when the coating contains active material or provides a sustained release barrier for drug transport in a functional coat. As tablets move around the coating drum, they periodically spend time at the surface of the avalanching layer and pass through the spray zone. During this time they receive amounts of coating solution proportional to both the time spent in the spray zone and the area exposed to the spray. The purpose of this research was to quantify …
