Population Level Dynamics Of Grasshopper Sparrow Populations Breeding On Reclaimed Mountaintop Mines In West Virginia, Frank K. Ammer Dec 2003

Population Level Dynamics Of Grasshopper Sparrow Populations Breeding On Reclaimed Mountaintop Mines In West Virginia, Frank K. Ammer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

During 2001 and 2002, I surveyed three mountaintop mining/valley fill (MTMVF) complexes in southern West Virginia to determine vegetation characteristics important to nest site selection and to estimate nest success for Grasshopper Sparrow populations inhabiting these complexes. I also performed genetic analyses to assess overall population structure, mating system, parentage, kinship, and gender of individuals comprising these populations. A total of 415 grasshopper sparrows were captured and systematic searches of study plots produced 75 active nests. Nest survival for 2001--2002 breeding season (33%) is comparable to survival rates previously reported in the literature. Nest survival rates decreased with increased reclamation …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers And Their Application In Preconcentrators For Gas Phase Sensors, Yi Fu Dec 2003

Synthesis And Characterization Of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers And Their Application In Preconcentrators For Gas Phase Sensors, Yi Fu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Various of molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized by different protocols. Piezoelectric quartz crystals coated with molecularly imprinted polymers were prepared to detect small organic vapors. Hydroquinone (HQ) and Phenol (P) have been used as non-covalent bound templates in order to generate shape-selectivity cavities in the polymer matrix. The recognition film was immobilized on the crystal surface via a pre-coated Poly(isobutylene) layer. The selective behaviors of the imprinted polymer films were studied by their steady-state response to various kinds of small organic vapors. The partition coefficients of polymers toward vapors were evaluated. The imprinted polymers exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity toward …

Genetic, Metabolic, And Histopathological Studies Of Particle -Associated Respiratory Alterations, Mohamed Mohamedy Ghanem Aug 2003

Genetic, Metabolic, And Histopathological Studies Of Particle -Associated Respiratory Alterations, Mohamed Mohamedy Ghanem

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) form a superfamily of enzymes crucial for the oxidative metabolism of a wide variety of endogenous and exogenous (xenobiotic) compounds. Cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) is a member of the CYP1A subfamily that is involved in pulmonary carcinogenesis. CYP1A1 metabolizes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), such as benzo[a]pyrene in cigarette smoke into DNA-binding reactive metabolites resulting in gene mutation and carcinogenesis. Silicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) are two pulmonary diseases associated with occupational exposure to silica and coal dust (CD), respectively. Most coal miners are smokers or ex-smokers and epidemiologic studies of coal dust carcinogenesis are confounded by the …

Rx Plays Multiple Roles In Eye Development, Vera A. Voronina Aug 2003

Rx Plays Multiple Roles In Eye Development, Vera A. Voronina

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The homeobox was first identified as a common feature of Drosophila genes that control pattern formation during embryogenesis. These genes have been implicated in the regional specialization of the developing brain, spinal cord and other body structures. Homeobox gene families are highly conserved and encode DNA-binding regulatory proteins. Certain members of the homeobox gene family, including Pax6, Chx10, Lhx2, Otx2, Six3 and Six6, are crucial for development of the eye. A new family of retinal homeobox genes, Rx, is expressed early in embryogenesis in retinal stem cells. This expression pattern, along with results of overexpression and gene deletion studies, is …

Afap-110 Is A Csrc Activator, Joseph Myers Baisden May 2003

Afap-110 Is A Csrc Activator, Joseph Myers Baisden

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The cSrc oncogene directs the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton in both normal and transformed cells. Mutation of protein binding domains (SH2 and SH3) from cSrc results in the deregulation of the kinase and the transformation of cells, while deletion of these domains blocks transformation by active forms of Src. This indicates that SH2/SH3 binding partners for cSrc may play a crucial role in the regulation of this kinase as well as the fulfillment of cSrc-directed functions. One SH2/SH3 binding partner for cSrc being investigated for its role in cSrc transformation is the a&barbelow;ctin f&barbelow;ilament-a&barbelow;ssociated p&barbelow;rotein, AFAP-110. AFAP-110 represents a …
