Dynamic Modeling And Control Of A Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell As A Distributed Generator, Padmanabhan Srinivasan Aug 2003

Dynamic Modeling And Control Of A Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell As A Distributed Generator, Padmanabhan Srinivasan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This research concentrated on the modeling and control of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell in a deregulated electric power system. The PEM fuel cell is a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system with various dynamic states. In most previous model studies, the stack temperature of a fuel cell was considered to be constant. For long duration short transient and analysis, the stack temperature should be considered a variable. A derived dynamic model for the PEM fuel cell was analyzed using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Power generation characteristics of the PEM fuel cell were presented. Performance of the PEM fuel cell under …

Modeling The International Competitiveness Of Botswana's Coal, Khaulani Fichani May 2003

Modeling The International Competitiveness Of Botswana's Coal, Khaulani Fichani

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Botswana has vast proven deposits of steam coal, which for a long time it has wanted to develop but without much success. The main objectives of this study are: (1) to analyze the time schedule of coal exports likely to be forthcoming from Botswana and the land routes for these exports; (2) to determine the competitiveness of Botswana's coal in the world steam coal markets and (3) to make recommendations on the appropriate policy for the exploitation of this coal. To accomplish these objectives, we construct a model of the seaborne steam coal trade consisting of exporters and importers with …

Telecommunication Of Stabilizing Signals In Power Systems, Guillaume Julien Raux May 2003

Telecommunication Of Stabilizing Signals In Power Systems, Guillaume Julien Raux

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Deregulation of the power industry has occurred at a rapid pace, opening some promising competition between suppliers. The result of this competition should be to the benefit of customers.;Telecommunication plays a crucial role in integrating systems and ensuring smooth operation by way of exchanging data and information between various systems that are responsible for monitoring and control of the grid. For example, a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) controller could be placed at one of the generators and requires remote measurements. All the communication schemes within the network generate delays that are characterized in this project using OPNET Modeler. OPNET Modeler …

Enhancing The Effectiveness Of The Utility Energy Supply Chain In Integrated Steel Manufacturing, Girish Sudhir Bhave May 2003

Enhancing The Effectiveness Of The Utility Energy Supply Chain In Integrated Steel Manufacturing, Girish Sudhir Bhave

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The iron and steel industry is energy intensive. The steel industry accounts for 2--3 of total US energy consumption. The energy costs account for 12--15% of the total cost of manufacturing steel. Cogeneration is done by most of the integrated steel producers for on-site electricity generation. The steel industries use different utility systems, and 90% of the industry uses standard steam boilers, steam turbines and BOP (Basic Oxygen Process). The boilers produce steam which is used for power generation and production processes. The system consumes oil, natural gas and blast furnace gas (BFG) to produce this steam and electricity. It …
