We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 154 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments in 2009-2010, during the sixth LIGO science run and the second and third Virgo science runs. We perform two distinct searches: a modeled search for coalescences of either two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, and a search for generic, unmodeled gravitational-wave bursts. We find no evidence for gravitational-wave counterparts, either with any individual GRB in this sample or with the population as a whole. For all GRBs we place lower bounds on the …

A leading formation scenario for R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars invokes the merger of degenerate He and CO white dwarfs (WDs) in a binary. The observed ratio of 16O/18O for RCB stars is in the range of 0.3-20 much smaller than the solar value of ∼500. In this paper, we investigate whether such a low ratio can be obtained in simulations of the merger of a CO and a He WD. Optical And Infrared Light Curves Of The Eclipsing X-Ray Binary V395 Car = 2s 0921-630, T. A. Ashcraft, R. I. Hynes, E. L. Robinson

We present results of optical and infrared photometric monitoring of the eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary V395 Car (2S 0921-630). Our observations reveal a clear, repeating orbital modulation with an amplitude of about 1 mag in B and V, and a little less in J. Combining our data with archival observations spanning about 20years, we derive an updated ephemeris with orbital period 9.0026 ± 0.0001d. We attribute the modulation to a combination of the changing aspect of the irradiated face of the companion star and eclipses of the accretion disc around the neutron star. Millihertz Quasi-Periodic Optical Oscillations In 4u 0614+091, Y. Zhang, R. I. Hynes, E. L. Robinson

We report the discovery of a 1-mHz optical quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the candidate ultra-compact low-mass X-ray binary 4U 0614+091. The ultra-low-frequency QPO has no X-ray counterpart in contemporaneousRXTE/PCA data and is likely a signature of structure in the accretion disc. The QPO can be reasonably fitted with a single sine wave but with a phase jump part way through the observation, indicating that it is not coherent. We also identify a 48-min modulation, approximately consistent with the suggested orbital period of O'Brien and Shahbaz et al. If this is indeed orbital, it supports an identification of 4U 0614+091 as …
