Cross-Pollination: Building A Co-Taught Course To Examine Art And Sex Through The Lens Of Botany, Christopher T. Martine, Diamanda A. Zizis, Anna K. Kell
Faculty Journal Articles
Driven by overlapping interests in plants, art, and diversity in sex expression, Anna Kell (Department of Art and Art History) and Chris Martine (Department of Biology) developed a course that integrates the perspectives of a visual artist and a botanist. Art & Sex Through the Lens of Botany seeks to impart the importance of making connections across disciplines and the value of visual literacy across academic lines. The course introduces foundational concepts in each field and encourages students to integrate and explore these different systems of knowledge and their intersections. In addition to developing fluencies related to both general botany …
Late-Ming Book Culture And The Fujian Christian Community: A Case Study Of Lixiu Yijian 勵修一鑑 (A Mirror To Encourage Self-Cultivation), Yunjing Xu
Faculty Journal Articles
This study demonstrates the importance of book culture in the building of a religious community and in the preservation and interpretation of local experiences, through the making of a book titled Lixiu yijian 勵修一鑑 (A mirror to encourage self-cultivation) around 1645. The main author, Li Jiugong 李久功, mobilized members of the Fujian Christian community to collaborate on this communal book project outside the Christian church. Both xylographic print culture and manuscript culture were involved in the process and in the final product of this project. Through genre affiliation, content categorization, and the addition of commentaries, Li and his associates transformed …

Toward A Latinx Stratification Economics, Stephan Lefebvre, Alan Aja, Nancy López, William A. Darity Jr., Darrick Hamilton
Faculty Journal Articles
This paper describes Latinx stratification economics (LSE) as a scholarly approach to studying the economic status of Latinas/os/es/xs primarily in the United States. We coin the term LSE to refer to work that draws on and is in conversation with both the emergent, interdisciplinary subfield of stratification economics (SE) and the interdisciplinary field of Latinx studies (LS). SE and LS have distinct intellectual traditions and drawing on both leads to strong theoretical and empirical scholarship on Latinxs, on the operation of race across space and historical time, and on the intersection of race with other systems of domination. We discuss …

Design Challenges For A Future Liquid Xenon Observatory, Abigail Kopec

An ultimate liquid xenon experiment would be limited in its dark matter science reach by irreducible neutrino backgrounds, which are an exciting signal in their own right. To achieve such sensitivity, other backgrounds that currently plague these detectors must be better mitigated, and extreme care must be taken in the design and construction phases. A 100-tonne xenon target is compelling to search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter, and has capabilities to study coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and search for neutrinoless double-beta decay signatures. Historically, liquid xenon time projection chambers have scaled to larger target masses with great success. …
Characterizing Linearizable Qaps By The Level-1 Reformulation-Linearization Technique, Lucas Waddell, Warren Adams
Characterizing Linearizable Qaps By The Level-1 Reformulation-Linearization Technique, Lucas Waddell, Warren Adams
Faculty Journal Articles
The quadratic assignment problem (QAP) is an extremely challenging NP-hard combinatorial optimization program. Due to its difficulty, a research emphasis has been to identify special cases that are polynomially solvable. Included within this emphasis are instances which are linearizable; that is, which can be rewritten as a linear assignment problem having the property that the objective function value is preserved at all feasible solutions. Various known sufficient conditions for identifying linearizable instances have been explained in terms of the continuous relaxation of a weakened version of the level-1 reformulation-linearization-technique (RLT) form that does not enforce nonnegativity on a subset …

Physiological abnormalities in pulmonary granulomas–pathological hallmarks of tuberculosis (TB)–compromise the transport of oxygen, nutrients, and drugs. In prior studies, we demonstrated mathematically and experimentally that hypoxia and necrosis emerge in the granuloma microenvironment (GME) as a direct result of limited oxygen availability. Building on our initial model of avascular oxygen diffusion, here we explore additional aspects of oxy- gen transport, including the roles of granuloma vasculature, transcapillary transport, plasma dilution, and interstitial convection, followed by cellular metabolism. Approximate analytical solutions are provided for oxygen and glucose concentration, interstitial fluid velocity, interstitial fluid pressure, and the thickness of the convective zone. …

Is Hey Jude In The Right Key? Cognitive Components Of Absolute Pitch Memory, Stephen C. Van Hedger, Andrea Halpern, David J. Vollweiler, Evan E. Smith, Peter Q. Pfordresher
Faculty Journal Articles
Most individuals, regardless of formal musical training, have long-term absolute pitch memory (APM) for familiar musical recordings, though with varying levels of accuracy. The present study followed up on recent evidence suggesting an association between singing accuracy and APM (Halpern & Pfordresher, 2022, Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, 84(1), 260–269), as well as tonal short-term memory (STM) and APM (Van Hedger et al., 2018, Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 71(4), 879–891). Participants from three research sites (n = 108) completed a battery of tasks including APM, tonal STM, singing accuracy, and self-reported auditory imagery. Both tonal STM and singing accuracy predicted …

“Sounds Like” Redemption? On The Musicality Of Species And The Species Of Musicality, Tyler Yamin, Alice Rudge
“Sounds Like” Redemption? On The Musicality Of Species And The Species Of Musicality, Tyler Yamin, Alice Rudge
Faculty Journal Articles
Popular and academic studies of music frequently claim that human musicality arose from the so-called ‘natural world’ of non-human species. And amid the anxieties produced by the Anthropocene, it is thought that the possibility of reconnecting with the natural world through a renewed appreciation of music’s links with nature may usher in a new era of posthuman environmental consciousness, offering repair and redemption. To critique these claims, we trace how notions of ‘musicality’ have been applied to or denied from non-human entities across diverse disciplines since the late nineteenth century. We conclude that such debates reinforce the separation that they …

Effect Of Anisotropic Brain Conductivity On Patient-Specific Volume Of Tissue Activation In Deep Brain Stimulation For Parkinson Disease, Xiaoxuan Liu, Kevin L. Chou, Parag G. Patil, Karlo A. Malaga
Faculty Journal Articles
Objective: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) modeling can improve surgical targeting by quantifying the spatial extent of stimulation relative to subcortical structures of interest. A certain degree of model complexity is required to obtain accurate predictions, particularly complexity regarding electrical properties of the tissue around DBS electrodes. In this study, the effect of anisotropy on the volume of tissue activation (VTA) was evaluated in an individualized manner. Methods: Tissue activation models incorporating patient-specific tissue conductivity were built for 40 Parkinson disease patients who had received bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) DBS. To assess the impact of local changes in tissue anisotropy, one …

The Activated Singer: Components Of An Emerging Singing Identity In Adults Learning To Sing, Karen J. Wise, Andrea R. Halpern
Faculty Journal Articles
Many adults avoid singing participation, even in informal situations. We examined components of singing identity in self-identified non-singers using questionnaires, including a novel Singing Inhibition (SI) scale, among 238 adults volunteering for a training study. Higher levels of Singing Inhibition were predicted by a combination of lower self-reported singing skill, lower Parental/Family Engagement in singing, and stronger belief that singing is a fixed ability. A subsample of 20 self-reported non-singers (aged 23–71) participated in 10 months of singing lessons, and we tracked changes in objective singing competence as well as self-assessments and singing-related attitudes and beliefs at baseline, at six …

If You Leave, Don't Leave Now: The Role Of Gender, Sociosexuality, And Fear Of Being Single On Desire To Engage In Breakup Sex, James B. Moran, Rebecca L. Burch, T. Joel Wade, Damian R. Murray
Faculty Journal Articles
Experiencing a romantic breakup is often a complicated and emotional experience, and in many cases, this emotional ambivalence leads to people having “breakup sex” with their ex-partners. To better understand this complicated relationship stage, we sampled 987 single adults to understand how individual differences in sociosexuality and fear of being single predict one's desire to have breakup sex and previous breakup sex experience. We observed that both men and women who reported more unrestricted sociosexual orientations reported greater desire for breakup sex. However, women—but not men—who reported greater fear of being single reported a greater desire for breakup sex. Lastly, …

Interminables Encrucijadas: El Dilema Ético En Tomás Nevinson, Isabel Cuñado
Faculty Journal Articles

Macro-autophagy is a highly conserved catabolic process among eukaryotes affecting macrophages. This work studies the genetic regulatory network involving the interplay between autophagy and macrophage polarization (activation). Autophagy-related genes (Atgs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of macrophage polarization (M1-M2) were predicted, and their regulatory networks constructed. Naïve (M0) mouse bone marrow-derived monocytes were differentiated into M1 and M2a. Validation of the targets of Smad1, LC3A and LC3B, Atg16L1, Atg7, IL-6, CD68, Arg-1, and Vamp7 was performed in vitro. Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry revealed three macrophage phenotypes: M0 (IL-6 + /CD68 +), M1 (IL-6 + /CD68 + /Arg-1 +), and M2a …

A Practice Theoretic Perspective On Influence, Gulay T. Guzel
Faculty Journal Articles
The extant literature on influence explores how attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors are shaped. This research falls into three main categories: social influence, persuasive communication–based influence, and choice architecture–based influence. Collectively, these literatures offer conceptualizations of influence that can be applied to improve consumer well-being and business efficacy. Yet while this body of work is impressive, it stops short of illuminating the full spectrum of influence; in particular, current theories has been unable to fully account for embodied activities and the interconnected nature of consumption activities within social influences. This paper begins to fill this gap by exploring the origins (impingement …
