Structural violence (SV) highlights how social structures harm communities via inequities in health, risk of trauma, and post-mortem treatment, however its applicability outside of Euroamerican capitalist contexts is unclear. Fifty-nine individuals from the MUNA cemetery (Pachacamac, Perú) from the Late Intermediate to Late Horizon Periods (1100-1532 CE) were analysed for evidence of SV. Nonspecific stress markers, osteoarthritis, pathological dental conditions, and physical trauma were recorded and compared as they related to age, sex and/or status and then contextualised using the Spanish Chronicles, ethnographic, and archaeological research. Chapter 2 presents an exploratory analysis to assess the relationships between genetic polymorphisms and pain severity and interference. Early childhood trauma was also explored as a moderator between genetic polymorphisms and pain outcomes. This dissertation presents the initial findings of the SYMBIOME project; which attempts to combine the objective and subjective aspects of musculoskeletal pain to develop a prognostic clinical phenotype. Chapter 2 presents a moderator analysis of functional outcomes (pain interference and pain severity). Psychosocial moderators can affect the relationship between biomarkers and pain. For pain severity, TNF-α, TGF-β1, and CRP were moderated by employment status, pre-existing psychopathology, and sex. This dissertation addresses current issues in the conceptualization and classification of childhood mental health issues (e.g., impact of sex/age on symptoms, comorbidity, limits of traditional models). In contrast to traditional models, the importance and value of utilizing individual symptoms as primary variables of interest is presented. This first study consisted of 9565 participants (M = 12.06, SD = 3.57, 58% males). Results for youth with no history of trauma indicated sex differences in symptom expression consistent with what has been previously shown in the literature; however, a complex presentation of attention-related symptoms was identified for females. Eighteen women in their second trimester of their first pregnancy who were survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and between the ages of 19 to 48 years old, were interviewed. Each participant was asked a series of questions including their thoughts about becoming a mother and how their lived experiences have changed their perception about raising a baby, their hopes for their baby and how their own beliefs have changed. A thematic analysis was conducted on 18 verbatim transcripts. Transcripts consisted of 120 statements that were coded into 4 major themes. The purpose of this thesis is to characterize the injury pattern of the antipersonnel IED (AP-IED) in victims from the Afghanistan conflict, to retrospectively examine the incidence and type of vascular trauma in a Canadian level 1 trauma center and to develop and novel device for control of junctional vascular injuries.

This thesis analyzes human skeletal trauma in a large well-preserved sample (n =268) from the Roman period Kellis site in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. Prevalence was determined for both infracranial and cranial skeletal trauma. The null hypothesis tested was that there are no differences in trauma when stratified by sex and by age cohorts (i.e., 18-35, 36-50 and 51+). Despite the overall trauma prevalence being similar between the sexes when not differentiated by age, the null hypothesis was rejected. Substance use disorders (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are frequently comorbid in those who have experienced psychological trauma, although little research has investigated the cause and effect relationships between the two. This thesis examined the co-occurrence of trauma-related symptoms, PTSD, and SUD using Perceived Causal Relations scaling in an online community sample (n = 513) and in persons who were or had recently attended treatment for SUDs (n = 12). Acute limb compartment syndrome (CS), a potentially devastating complication of musculoskeletal trauma, is characterized by increased pressure within a closed osseofascial compartment, resulting in muscle-threatening and ultimately limb-threatening ischemia. Urgent fasciotomy remains the only effective treatment and a current gold-standard surgical therapy. Despite a large body of literature dedicated to understanding the pathophysiology of CS, the mechanisms of CS-induced tissue damage are rather poorly understood. The established view is that increasing compartmental pressure compromises microcirculatory perfusion, restricting oxygen and nutrient delivery to vital tissues, resulting in cellular anoxia and severe tissue necrosis. The present study explored the lived experience of first-time pregnant women who have survived childhood sexual abuse and have immigrated to Canada. This experience was explored through an ecological lens to understand the multiple layers of impact these experiences had in these women’s lives. Secondary data interviews, from a larger study on embodied trauma, were analyzed to better understand the impact of childhood sexual abuse, immigration and culture on the transition to motherhood.
