The Ordovician Utica shale play is rapidly developing throughout the Appalachian Basin. The play is a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system that grades from primarily carbonates at its base in the Lexington/Trenton limestones into primarily shale within the Utica shale. As of January 2021, it is the third highest-producing dry shale gas play in the contiguous U.S., although it is known to produce wet gas and oil in various parts of the basin. The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) was deposited across southern Louisiana and Mississippi during the Upper Cretaceous. The study focuses on a core region containing vast deposits of Cretaceous-aged sediments that have economic importance for oil and gas exploration. This region has been conventionally drilled for decades, focusing on the recovery of the Cretaceous hydrocarbons. Explorers within this region had traditionally targeted the massive sand units of the Lower and Upper Tuscaloosa Group while neglecting the middle Tuscaloosa Marine Shale unit. Studies of the effects of polishing techniques, scale of nanoindentation, and petrophysical properties were conducted on both Woodford and Tuscaloosa Marine Shale. Polishing procedures include both an in-house developed, mechanical sample preparation protocol as well as ion beam milling. The elastic modulus and hardness of each mechanically polished sample was found to have larger value than those that were ion-milled. Additionally, at low loads, the samples resulted in having high standard deviation. This high deviation was found to be significantly reduced by testing at higher loads. Isolation And Characterization Of Salinivibrio Sp. Strain Lp-1 From An Impoundment Used For Marcellus Shale Waste Waters, Oliver B. Dugas

A euryhalic, gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterium was isolated from an enrichment culture found in an impoundment used for storing Marcellus Shale waste water. Designated strain LP-1, its cells were non-spore-forming, motile, curved rods with a single polar flagellum. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed it is a £^-proteobacerium closely related (98%) to Salinivibrio costicola. Carbohydrates serve as energy sources both aerobically and anaerobically. It grew anaerobically on nitrate with hydrogen, acetate, pyruvate, or lactate but not with formate, and did not use arsenate, sulfate, or thiosulfate as electron acceptors. The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale in southwest Mississippi and Southeast Louisiana's Florida Parishes has become an unconventional target for the exploration and production of oil. Spurred by early estimates of over 7 billion barrels of oil in place, the target region for this production is the basal portion of the shale where a continuous increase in resistivity greater than 5 Ohmm can be observed. This increase was originally attributed solely to the generation of hydrocarbons from the organic matter contained within the shale, with the presence of the oil and gas impeding the flow of electrons through what would normally be …
