Investigation Of Completeness Of Combustion In Cng Fueled Spark Ignition Engines., Mohsen Battoei Avarzaman Jan 2003

Investigation Of Completeness Of Combustion In Cng Fueled Spark Ignition Engines., Mohsen Battoei Avarzaman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study was to apply and evaluate two separate techniques for estimating of the completeness of combustion in a multi-cylinder engine fueled with compressed natural gas. The degree of correlation between such two independent estimates of the combustion completeness was sought. One technique, with better time resolution and viewed to be more accurate, calculates the completeness of combustion on a cycle-by-cycle basis using in-cylinder pressure measurements. The technique utilizes the normalized pressure rise parameter due to combustion to describe the completeness of combustion. The second technique evaluates the completeness of combustion based on time-averaged measurements of unburned …

The Effect Of Depression On Memory Performance Following Traumatic Brain Injury., Michelle Anne. Keiski Jan 2003

The Effect Of Depression On Memory Performance Following Traumatic Brain Injury., Michelle Anne. Keiski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to compare the memory performance of depressed TBI subjects and non-depressed TBI subjects. The hypothesis was that differences between the groups would emerge on the recall and/or recognition components of the California Verbal Learning Test-II (CVLT-II) and the Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT), after covarying a composite score reflecting neuropsychological impairment. The neuropsychological test results of 76 subjects who had sustained mild to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) were obtained retrospectively. The subjects were classified as depressed or non-depressed on the basis of depression scores on the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI). The findings …

Self-Control Vs. Social Control As An Explanation For Delinquency., Marcel Joseph Parent Jan 2003

Self-Control Vs. Social Control As An Explanation For Delinquency., Marcel Joseph Parent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although Gottfredson and Hirschi's (1990) General Theory of Crime has received much more attention over the last decade than that of Hirschi's (1969) Social Control Theory, it is imperative that the latter theory's contribution not be overlooked. Social Control Theory posits that delinquent acts result when an individuals bond to society is weak or broken. Hirschi proposed that the four elements comprising the social bond are attachment, commitment, involvement and belief. Due to the shortcomings of Social Control Theory's ability to explain delinquency, Gottfredson in collaboration with Hirschi (1990) formulated the General Theory of Crime. At the heart of the …

Siphon Removal Of Cohesionless Materials., Syeed Mahbub. Ullah Jan 2003

Siphon Removal Of Cohesionless Materials., Syeed Mahbub. Ullah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the removal of cohesionless sediments by siphoning. A significant part of this study involves the analysis of equilibrium scour hole dimensions under different siphon flow characteristics. Scour holes of the sediments were formed by a siphon tube of three different sizes (9.65, 13.86 and 20.4 mm) positioned vertically at different positions relative to the surface of the sand bed. A total of 174 tests were performed, where the position of the tube ranged from 101.6 mm below the original bed to 6.4 mm above it. The latter part of the study investigates the heights for critical and …

The Relationship Between Anthropogenic Disturbance And The Distribution Of A Nonindigenous Species, Echinogammarus Ischnus Stebbing, 1898 (Amphipoda: Gammaridae), At Great Lakes Coastal Margins, Misun Kang Jan 2003

The Relationship Between Anthropogenic Disturbance And The Distribution Of A Nonindigenous Species, Echinogammarus Ischnus Stebbing, 1898 (Amphipoda: Gammaridae), At Great Lakes Coastal Margins, Misun Kang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Invasive species are becoming increasingly common components of Great Lakes zoobenthic communities. Elton (1958) proposed that biotic resistance against exotic species establishment is greater in intact communities than in those disturbed by human activities. However, Baltz and Moyle (1993) suggested that if abiotic conditions are appropriate, invasion is likely, regardless of the biota already present. I tested these hypotheses by investigating the distribution of Echinogammarus ischnus Stebbing, 1898, an exotic amphipod, at U.S. Great Lakes coastal margin sites influenced by varying degrees of anthropogenic stress. Thirty-nine sites supporting Gammarus fasciatus Say, 1818, a common amphipod with habitat preferences similar to …

The Serial Murder Of Sex Workers: The Social Construction Of Serial Killers By Sex Worker Advocacy Groups, Heidi Rebecca Charlotte Baker Jan 2003

The Serial Murder Of Sex Workers: The Social Construction Of Serial Killers By Sex Worker Advocacy Groups, Heidi Rebecca Charlotte Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historic, academic and popular discourses on the serial murder of prostitutes have failed to incorporate the voices of victimized sex workers and their advocates. To fill this void, this thesis investigates how the serial murder of prostitutes is socially constructed by sex worker advocacy groups. Using standard content analysis techniques, it analyzes on-line texts generated by sex worker advocacy groups that are seeking to raise awareness of the victimization of sex workers by serial murderers. It additionally analyzes on-line news media accounts of these advocacy efforts beyond the Internet. Advocacy efforts have brought victimization of prostitutes to public attention and …

An Object-Oriented Analysis Technique For Developing Object-Oriented Simulations In Silk., Lia. Zannier Jan 2003

An Object-Oriented Analysis Technique For Developing Object-Oriented Simulations In Silk., Lia. Zannier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation is very popular as an analysis tool for complex systems. A new paradigm shift towards object oriented simulations is hoping to make simulations even more powerful and accessible. However, in order for those not familiar with object oriented techniques to join this shift, methods must be developed for them to build object oriented simulations, until they acquire an understanding of this programming paradigm. This is an attempt to develop a procedure for just such novice model builders. This thesis begins with some background on object oriented paradigm concepts. It then provides an overview of several different object oriented analysis …

Design Of Iir Filters With Canonical Signed-Digit (Csd) Coefficients Using Genetic Algorithms., Li. Liang Jan 2003

Design Of Iir Filters With Canonical Signed-Digit (Csd) Coefficients Using Genetic Algorithms., Li. Liang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, an optimization method is used in the design of 1-D IIR digital filters, doubly complementary filter pairs and 2-D IIR digital filters. This method uses genetic algorithm (GA) to minimize the mean square error between the desired and the designed filter responses in order to calculate the coefficients of the filter's transfer function. The 1-D IIR filters are designed using cascade structure, and constraints are imposed on the coefficients of the denominator polynomials to ensure stability. In the one-dimensional case, the method is also used to design doubly complementary filter pairs, in which case two filters that …

A Class Of Linear Phase Iir Digital Filters Design., Tao. Dai Jan 2003

A Class Of Linear Phase Iir Digital Filters Design., Tao. Dai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Digital IIR filters find wide applications in fields such as speech processing, image processing and noise/echo cancellation. In recent years, the design of linear phase IIR filter becomes a very hot issue of research interest. As we know, FIR filters designed to approximate a magnitude response that has a narrow transition band between the passband and the stopband usually require a large number of multipliers and they have a large delay also. Hence we prefer to IIR digital filters that have less number of multipliers than their corresponding FIR counterparts but one of disadvantages is that an IIR filter cannot …

Difficult Operations In The Multi-Dimensional Logarithmic Number System., Roberto Muscedere Jan 2003

Difficult Operations In The Multi-Dimensional Logarithmic Number System., Roberto Muscedere

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Multi-Dimensional Logarithmic Number System (MDLNS), with similar properties to the Logarithmic Number System (LNS), provides more degrees of freedom than the LNS by virtue of having two or more orthogonal bases and the ability to use multiple digits. Unlike the LNS there is no direct functional relationship between binary/floating point representation and the MDLNS representation. Traditionally look-up tables (LUTs) were used to move from the binary domain to the MDLNS domain. This method could be unrealistic for hardware implementation when large binary ranges or multiple digits were used. The lack of this direct relationship also complicated the addition and …

The Impacts Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons On Brown Bullhead (Ameiurus Nebulosus) Apoptosis Regulation., Christopher Ronald Lindholm Busch Jan 2003

The Impacts Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons On Brown Bullhead (Ameiurus Nebulosus) Apoptosis Regulation., Christopher Ronald Lindholm Busch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, it is hypothesized that the apoptotic pathways in the brown bullhead are altered by the presence of PAHs with a final outcome of elevated tumor formation. To evaluate the impact of PAHs on the apoptotic process, three separate, but related, studies were completed to characterise apoptosis in brown bullhead. First, the impact of known apoptotic inducers (staurosporine, cycloheximide, and TNF-alpha) on cell death in brown bullhead fibroblasts was characterized (Chapter 1). Secondly, fibroblasts were exposed to PAHs to examine how exposure to an environmentally relevant genotoxic substance alters the apoptotic pathway (Chapter 2). Finally, bullheads from various …

Each sensor has a sensitivity of 10.3 mV/Pa when biased …

0.18 Micron Cmos Ip Core Design And Methodology., Joseph Steven. Schrey Jan 2003

0.18 Micron Cmos Ip Core Design And Methodology., Joseph Steven. Schrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When working with 0.18mum or smaller CMOS technologies, current larger technology architectures are not easily scaled and subject to short channel effects. As a result, changes in architecture and/or unconventional transistor sizing must be done. The voltage comparator that has been designed consists of (13) transistors to form the following architectures; a differential input pair, a current mirror and a rail-pulling output stage. Special transistor sizing has been used in the current mirror biasing stage to produce a constant current source for biasing of the input transistors, overcoming the problems of non-constant current and non-constant transconductance due to short channel …

Adjustment To Retirement: Is The Presence Of Children In The Household Related To Retirement Stress?, Michelle W. Langlois Jan 2003

Adjustment To Retirement: Is The Presence Of Children In The Household Related To Retirement Stress?, Michelle W. Langlois

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Retirement is a major life transition that approximately 30% of retirees find stressful. Research has typically focused on identifying factors that predict retirement stress. The present study examined if household composition and retirement stress were related while controlling for financial status, type of retirement, self-assessed health, and perceived family social support. Results indicated that there was no difference between retirees with children in the home and retirees whose children have left the home in regards to life satisfaction, perceived stress in retirement, and global perceived stress. Childless retirees were found to have higher life satisfaction than those with children (regardless …

An Harmonic Analysis For Operators On Homogeneous Banach Spaces., Olusakin Joshua. Emmanuel Jan 2003

An Harmonic Analysis For Operators On Homogeneous Banach Spaces., Olusakin Joshua. Emmanuel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we undertake an harmonic analysis of the Banach algebra L (B) of bounded linear operators on a homogeneous Banach space B of functions on a topological abelian group G. Our analysis is divided into two major parts. In the first, we examine the case where G is compact, particularly G = T (the circle group), and in the second G is locally compact. In both cases, we define the classes of invariant and almost invariant operators in L (B) and investigate their properties. With each T ∈ L (B), we associate a Fourier series and show that …

Simulating The Plenoptic Camera., Arash. Razavi Jan 2003

Simulating The Plenoptic Camera., Arash. Razavi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the simulation of a CCD based camera called the Plenoptic Camera. Plenoptic Camera is a novel single lens camera capable of capturing 3D information of the scene and is used to find the depth of the objects. The main concept behind the design of this camera lies in the fact that light which passes through the lens of a camera is quite rich in information which regular cameras are not designed to take advantage of. The plenoptic camera keeps track of the 3D information of the light rays by distributing these rays over a two dimensional array …

Propagule Pressure: A Null Model For Biological Invasions., Robert I. Colautti Jan 2003

Propagule Pressure: A Null Model For Biological Invasions., Robert I. Colautti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I begin with a review of recent attempts to identify characteristics of species 'invasiveness' (i.e., the ability to invade) and habitat 'invasibility' (i.e., the susceptibility to invasion), and find little support for an emerging consensus on species- or habitat-specific characteristics. Moreover, I find that few studies consider hypotheses based on the concept of 'propagule pressure' (i.e., introduction effort), despite its potential as a confounding factor. Another barrier to generalizations may be the divergent use of operationally important terms like 'invasive', 'naturalized', or 'nuisance'. I therefore introduce a framework that conceptualizes biological invasions as a series of obligatory stages. This stage-based …

Factors Regulating Biomass And Contaminant Uptake By Round Gobies (Neogobius Melanostomus) In Western Lake Erie., Victoria Ann. Lee Jan 2003

Factors Regulating Biomass And Contaminant Uptake By Round Gobies (Neogobius Melanostomus) In Western Lake Erie., Victoria Ann. Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Round gobies, an invasive fish from the Ponto-Caspian region of Eastern Europe arrived in the western basin of Lake Erie in 1993. A bioenergetics model was developed for round gobies to quantify the flow of energy and contaminants from the benthos to pelagic fishes. Weight and temperature dependent coefficients for metabolism and consumption were derived. Food consumption increased with temperature up to 26°C before sharply decreasing and decreased with increasing fish weight. Oxygen consumption was inversely related to body mass and increased exponentially with temperature. Additional parameters were obtained from the literature to describe specific dynamic action, egestion and excretion. …

Vision-Guided Multiple Planar Object Recognition And Tracking., Shahed. Shahir Jan 2003

Vision-Guided Multiple Planar Object Recognition And Tracking., Shahed. Shahir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to minimize the cost for any improvement or changes in manufacturing products, a flexible manufacturing system is necessary. To do so, robots should be empowered with equipment like vision sensors, which can work as human eyes for robots. A tracking vision sensor consists of a CCD camera, data acquisition, preprocessing, recognition and tracking modules. In this thesis, a design methodology for invariant recognition-based object tracking is proposed, which can potentially be used for implementation of either vision sensors or tracking vision sensors. The performance of Invariant Recognition-based object tracking to a large extent depends on the object recognition …

Zoobenthic Succession In Constructed Wetlands Of The Fort Mcmurray Oil Sands Region: Developing A Measure Of Zoobenthic Recovery (Alberta)., Christel Lynn. Leonhardt Jan 2003

Zoobenthic Succession In Constructed Wetlands Of The Fort Mcmurray Oil Sands Region: Developing A Measure Of Zoobenthic Recovery (Alberta)., Christel Lynn. Leonhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effect of oil sands process material (OSPM) on the zoobenthic community of constructed wetlands in the Fort McMurray oil sands region. The unique characteristics of OSPM-affected wetlands may modify the successional trajectory of invertebrate communities compared to that of high or low-conductivity reference wetlands. The zoobenthic community of 31 wetlands, aged 0 to 30 years, was simultaneously sampled, allowing inference into the chronological sequence of change that results with wetland succession. Wetlands were categorised a priori into one of three classes: low conductivity (<700 muS/cm) or high conductivity (700--2,500 muS/cm) reference wetlands or OSPM-affected wetlands (700--4,000 muS/cm) containing tailings and/or water from bitumen extraction. Invertebrate communities in each wetland were assessed using core, artificial substrate, and sweep net sampling methods. Principal components analysis and discriminant function analysis were used to classify each OSPM-affected wetland as being "equivalent to young" or "equivalent to mature" reference wetlands. Restoration of mined areas to pre-mining conditions of diversity and abundance of habitat types, using wetlands as a component of a reclamation strategy, is a viable option. Rorschach And Mmpi-2 Construct Specific Convergence: Disentangling The Roles Of Response Style And General Psychopathology, Marc F. Carriere Jan 2003

Rorschach And Mmpi-2 Construct Specific Convergence: Disentangling The Roles Of Response Style And General Psychopathology, Marc F. Carriere

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the MMPI-2 and Rorschach are commonly used and researched tests, studies examining the convergence of similarly named constructs (e.g., depression) have typically found that the tests are unrelated (Archer & Krishnamurthy, 1997). Meyer (1997, 1999) and Meyer, Riethmiller, Brooks, Benoit, and Handler (2000) established that choosing participants who respond to the Rorschach and the MMPI-2 in a similar way based on their placement on the first unrotated principal component (FUPC) moderates convergence between similarly named constructs (e.g., depression). However, it has been unclear as to whether these results were due to specific construct convergence or whether they were due …

Nonlinear Deformations Of Laterally Loaded Piles Embedded In Stiff Clay Located Below The Water Table: Sensitivity Analysis., Deddy. Suwarno Jan 2003

Nonlinear Deformations Of Laterally Loaded Piles Embedded In Stiff Clay Located Below The Water Table: Sensitivity Analysis., Deddy. Suwarno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensitivity analysis is one of the methods predicting how sensitive a soil-pile interactive system will behave under a lateral loading, whether a horizontal force or a bending moment, due to the changes of the design variables. For a civil engineer, it is important to know what is the deformation at the top of the pile foundation to be considered for the upper structure. Therefore, the sensitivity analysis in this thesis focuses on the changes of the displacement and the angle of flexural rotation at the top of the pile due to the changes of the design variables which are the …

Occupational Health And Safety Standards And The Potential Outcomes Of Privatized Regulation., Liam. Mccarthy Jan 2003

Occupational Health And Safety Standards And The Potential Outcomes Of Privatized Regulation., Liam. Mccarthy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This Masters thesis in political science examines the recent introduction of voluntary compliance mechanisms (e.g. third party verification, experience rating, etc.) into the field of occupational health and safety. It analyses these policies from a historic and economic perspective and examines the Canadian experience to predict likely outcomes of these mechanisms. The thesis concludes that these mechanisms have the potential to be complementary mechanisms to government regulation but are unlikely to act as appropriate substitutes for government action. This is due to the inherent failings of the market's ability to regulate occupational health and safety even with its modern permutations.Dept. …

On Finding A Maximum Empty Rectangle Of Arbitrary Orientation: Theory And Implementation., Hongtao. Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Geometric optimization, which has emerged as an important line of research within the field of Computational Geometry, is concerned with computational problems in which the objective is to find the best of all possible solutions. More formally, it is used to find an optimal solution with the minimum (or maximum) value in a search space which contains all the possible solutions. In this thesis, we begin with a very brief survey of the field of geometric optimization, focussing on the some of the important techniques that have been used to solve a variety of problems in this area. Then, we …

Optimal Logical Topology Design With Wdm Path Protection., Hong. Guan Jan 2003

Optimal Logical Topology Design With Wdm Path Protection., Hong. Guan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bandwidth usage on the Internet is doubling every six to twelve months according to some research result. The emergence of WDM technology provides more bandwidth and cost effective solution to upgrade the speed of data transmission. The future trend in backbone network design is to gradually migrate to IP over WDM network. For this next generation optical network, there is one very important issue---design of robust networks that can survive faults. Protection is a common lower layer mechanism against common faults in optical network, such as fiber cuts. There are two protection mechanisms, dedicated path protection or shared path protection, …
