Some Bacteriological And Biochemical Aspects Of Alfalfa Silage Prepared At Different Moisture Levels, Gene W. Ronald Feb 1959

Some Bacteriological And Biochemical Aspects Of Alfalfa Silage Prepared At Different Moisture Levels, Gene W. Ronald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The object of this study is to elucidate the facts observed in the experimental trails of emailing alfalfa in terms of microbiological populations and some biochemical analyses. The problems in the study is involved with the production of a good quality silage are evident when individual alfalfa samples, apparently alike in all respects, do not produce uniform products. The necessity of understanding the basic mechanism of the silage fermentation process, in order that a better quality silage may be produced with some degree of consistency, is obvious.

An Actuarial Study Of Scores Received By High School Seniors On The Cooperative School And College Ability Test And These Students' Grades Received During The First Year Of Attendance In South Dakota Colleges, Donald D. Mott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1956 and 1957 college counselors felt a need for information concerning what South Dakota students were doing after they finished high school. Many questions were asked. Do out-of-state colleges lure away the outstanding students with scholarships? Do large numbers of the better students stay out of college? Do many students with great potential fail to do well in their high school studies? Are girls better achievers than boys? The South Dakota Guidance Association formed a committee to investigate some of these questions through a follow-up study. College and high school staffs have sought methods by which they could predict …

Effect Of Time Of Fertilizer Application On Yield And Quality Of Oats And Barley, John J. Mortvedt Feb 1959

Effect Of Time Of Fertilizer Application On Yield And Quality Of Oats And Barley, John J. Mortvedt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The level of soil moisture at the time of small grain planting is very often low and many farmers are hesitant to invest in fertilizer for small grain. In May, when the moisture outlook generally improves and when nitrogen deficiency symptoms have appeared in the small grain, farmers are interested in knowing if the application of fertilizer will still give a profitable response. The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of the time of application of fertilizer on the yield of small grain and also on the quality as measured by the protein content. A supplementary …

Physiological Studies On Bloat, Clarence Leonard Moore Feb 1959

Physiological Studies On Bloat, Clarence Leonard Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bloat is a complex and confusing syndrome involving an interaction of plant and animal factors. Many “toxic” principles of plants have been incriminated either by directly inhibiting rumen motility and eructation or indirectly by changing the physical characteristics of the rumen ingests. Variations in anatomical structures, activity of such structures and microbiological activity all might be animal factors which are involve. The development of the livestock industry and the use of legumes in pasture programs have grown very rapidly during the past decade. Recent studies have been directed towards the biochemical constituents of legumes that might contribute to bloat. Attention …

A Study Of Factors Influencing Weaning Weights Of Beef Calves, Joe Allen Minyard Feb 1959

A Study Of Factors Influencing Weaning Weights Of Beef Calves, Joe Allen Minyard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability of the cow to wean a heavy, vigorous and good quality calf every year is probably the most important economic trait in a beef cattle enterprise. But wide variations in the weaning weight of beef calves exist in almost every herd. These variations persist despite possible continued selection and general improvement and form the basis for further genetic improvement of the trait. Background information necessary for the development of effective herd improvement programs include knowledge of (1) the variability present in the performance traits, (2) the relative importance of heredity on the expression of the traits, and (3) …

Desorption Of Ammonium From Montmorillonite Clay, Rein U. Mesdag Feb 1959

Desorption Of Ammonium From Montmorillonite Clay, Rein U. Mesdag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The clay minerals are extremely important constituents of the inorganic solid phase of the soil primarily because of their ability to adsorb cations. Some clay minerals are capable of adsorbing certain cations so tenaciously, that these ions cannot be readily extracted with a neutral solution of a salt. Potassium and ammonium are nutrient cations that may suffer a decrease in their availability to plants by this phenomenon, which is commonly referred to as cation fixation. This research was undertaken to study the behavior of ammonium ions adsorbed by montmorillonite as affected by heating at various temperatures and to test the …

An Investigation Of Optimum Spacing Of Fins For Maximum Heat Loss In Free Convection, Lloyd Duane Lee Feb 1959

An Investigation Of Optimum Spacing Of Fins For Maximum Heat Loss In Free Convection, Lloyd Duane Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In designing a heat exchanger, an engineer is interested in the highest possible efficiency of the unit. If he is designing a transistor with an internal heat source, he is interested in dissipating this heat energy to the surrounding air or heat sink. In these and other devices, the engineer wants a design that gives a maximum heat loss, or heat transfer, per unit of base surface. The heat transfer coefficient of a heated object can be increased by extending its surface, thereby providing more surface area for heat transfer. If the maximum heat loss per unit area of base …

Determining Winter Hardy Apple Genotypes Prior To Seed Germination, Harry Eugene Lasn Feb 1959

Determining Winter Hardy Apple Genotypes Prior To Seed Germination, Harry Eugene Lasn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to find a method of eliminating a high percentage of the tender genotypes in a population of apples before planting the seed. The introduction of apple culture into the Great Plains and adjacent Canadian provinces confronted horticulturists with the problem of winter hardiness. Thousands of seedlings of standard varieties were planted in an attempt to find varieties sufficiently hardy for this region of North America. Fruit breeding to develop high quality apples adapted to the northern Great Plains is an important phase of horticulture. Each new variety developed must be subjected to long and …

Further Attempts To Isolate And Identify The Selenium Protective Factor Of Linseed Oil Meal, Russell Lewis Larson Feb 1959

Further Attempts To Isolate And Identify The Selenium Protective Factor Of Linseed Oil Meal, Russell Lewis Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of different substances provide varying degrees of protection against selenium poisoning. Several workers have reported a protective effect shown by proteineous materials. Of these, one researcher found linseed oil meal to be superior to other materials tested. Further studies have led to the partial separation of selenium protective factor from linseed oil meal. The studies described here were undertaken as a continuation of the effort to separate and attempt to identify the selenium protective principle or principles known to be present in linseed oil meal. Several different approaches were used and are discussed.
