Quantitative methods were used to compare …

Explaining Computer Use Among Preservice Teachers: Towards The Development Of A Richer Conceptual Model Incorporating Experience, Demographic, Motivation, Personality, And Learning Style Clusters Of Variables., Salah Zogheib Jan 2006

Explaining Computer Use Among Preservice Teachers: Towards The Development Of A Richer Conceptual Model Incorporating Experience, Demographic, Motivation, Personality, And Learning Style Clusters Of Variables., Salah Zogheib

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the professional training that North American teachers receive, many believe they are not well prepared to implement computer technology in their classrooms (Industry Canada, 2003; The CEO Forum, 2001). Educational computing research has failed to provide conceptually integrated frameworks and theories that can best predict or explain the factors that facilitate computer use, whether in a computer course or for general purposes. The conceptual framework that emerged in this study incorporated specific determinants of computer use---demographics, experience, learning style, motivation, and personality---for new teachers that represent prominent themes in theories of human motivation and decision making. However, among the …

Preservice Teacher Beliefs Related To Internet Usage., Salah. Zogheib Jan 2003

Preservice Teacher Beliefs Related To Internet Usage., Salah. Zogheib

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study investigated the relationship between preservice teachers' attitudes, achievement-, and value-related motivational beliefs about the Internet and their perceived likelihood to use it in instruction. Attitudes investigated preservice teachers' confidence and liking of the Internet. Achievement-related beliefs were examined within a motivational framework that described preservice teachers' actual knowledge and perceived experience about the Internet. Value-related beliefs were constructed from six measures for which the Internet would be valuable: personal needs, future career goals, a partner, children, future students, and society in general. Likelihood of using the Internet in instruction focused on teaching needs, students' learning, and differential access …

The Playground Project: A Case Study In Participatory Design., Karen Elizabeth. Mcrorie Jan 1999

The Playground Project: A Case Study In Participatory Design., Karen Elizabeth. Mcrorie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a case study of the importance of participation in instructional development. The project began with the assumption that children can have a central decision-making role in changing their playground design, an assumption based in the theory of participatory design. The research goal was to develop a new participatory model for designing school playgrounds. This goal was reached through the education of children in playground design theory and the creation of meaningful opportunities for children to plan and design existing playgrounds. Yael & Schlomo Sharan's Group Investigation was the education method selected to implement a participatory design process …

The Relationship Between Instruction Of Metacognitive Strategies And Student Achievement., Patricia Breaton. Oshar Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Instruction Of Metacognitive Strategies And Student Achievement., Patricia Breaton. Oshar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The differences in the effectiveness of passive-instruction and active instruction of study skills and time management were investigated. Students responded to two surveys on five-point Likert-type scales prior to and twice following the treatments. Marks were also gathered and analyzed. The results found that females scored significantly higher on all time management and study orientation sub-scales than did males. Work method and teacher approval mean scores for males in the two treatment groups improved from pretest to post-test #2. Grade 8 marks of students in the treatment groups receiving active and passive instruction did not improve significantly more than those …

A Rationale For A Correspondence Version Of A First-Year University Expository Writing Course., Natasha G. Wiebe Jan 1998

A Rationale For A Correspondence Version Of A First-Year University Expository Writing Course., Natasha G. Wiebe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My task here was to prepare Expository Writing (University of Windsor course #26-100) as a distance education course, which included developing a comprehensive study guide to take the place of classroom instruction (see Appendix A). This rationale justifies the approach I take in the study guide with references to literature in the fields of expository writing and distance education. Chapter 1 reviews the origins of expository writing and distance education courses in Canada. It also touches on the current delivery of these courses, particularly at the University of Windsor. Chapter 2 reviews the literature concerning the pedagogies of writing that …

Instructional Design From Theory To Practice: A Guidebook For Designing And Implementing Effective Instruction. Alcohol Abuse Prevention Programs For Adolescents., Linda Ann. Morrow Jan 1998

Instructional Design From Theory To Practice: A Guidebook For Designing And Implementing Effective Instruction. Alcohol Abuse Prevention Programs For Adolescents., Linda Ann. Morrow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol is the most widely used drug in Canada. The Ontario ministry of Health (1990) estimated that 83% of the population fifteen years and older consume alcohol. Alcohol is also responsible for more health-related problems than any other drug. Young people are clearly identified as a priority in alcohol abuse prevention strategies, since injuries resulting from alcohol abuse continues to be the number one cause of death for young Canadians. While the transfer of planning and implementation of prevention programs to the more "grassroots" organizations has empowered communities, many organizations and community groups lack the full theoretical background for designing …

Critical Thinking And Native Pedagogy: A Discussion Of Compatibility., Michele Marie. Franklin Jan 1996

Critical Thinking And Native Pedagogy: A Discussion Of Compatibility., Michele Marie. Franklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At the onset of the process of writing this paper, it was my strong conviction that the Critical Thinking movement had a lot to offer the curriculum planners developing First Nations Pedagogy. The Examination of several Critical Thinking models, the attempt to find some kind of continuum within which to organize them, and the comparison with the needs and effective methods of Native educators, has substantially reduced my enthusiasm. The more I examined the concepts of rationality and objectivity (explicit or implied in CT models) in relation to the Native worldview, the more I became convinced that the CT model …

Determinants Of Teacher Participation In Outdoor Education: A Survey Of Kent County Teachers (Ontario)., T. Lance. Balkwill Jan 1996

Determinants Of Teacher Participation In Outdoor Education: A Survey Of Kent County Teachers (Ontario)., T. Lance. Balkwill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which Kent County elementary school teachers involve students in outdoor education activities and to determine the factors that influence this involvement. Four models were developed for this investigation: (a) school climate (i.e., awareness of curriculum, perceptions of administrative support, and legal liability); (b) teacher burnout; (c) teacher's personality type; and (d) teacher's personal background (i.e., qualifications, experience, interest, and expertise). Information for the study was gathered by surveying 203 teachers. The survey consisted of: (a) an Outdoor Education Questionnaire generated by the researcher, (b) Holland's Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI), …

A Comparison Between Selected Aspects Of The National Curriculum In England And Wales And The Common Curriculum In Ontario, With Particular Reference To The Science Programs In Both Systems., Bernard. Taylor Jan 1995

A Comparison Between Selected Aspects Of The National Curriculum In England And Wales And The Common Curriculum In Ontario, With Particular Reference To The Science Programs In Both Systems., Bernard. Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study argues that the Transition Years science programs in Ontario, when compared with the National Curriculum science programs for Key Stage 3 in England and Wales, are being implemented in ways which: are less assessment driven, promote a wider variety of teaching methods, give teachers more ownership of the curriculum, and are less centralised. In investigating these hypotheses the researcher looked at the historical background to recent curriculum changes in Ontario, and in England and Wales, as well as interviewing teachers, principals and headteachers, and administering questionnaires, in both Ontario and England and Wales. The study showed that the …
