Television Content And Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) Symptoms: Testing The Relationship On Preschoolers, Bojana Knezevic Jan 2009

Television Content And Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) Symptoms: Testing The Relationship On Preschoolers, Bojana Knezevic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the role that the violent television plays in the manifestation of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms in a Canadian sample of preschool-aged children. The parents of preschool-aged children at increased risk (n = 8) and low risk (n = 25) for ADHD provided information about their child’s television viewing patterns and favourite programs. Separate ANOVAs were used to evaluate the relationship between the group status and the amount of television viewing per day and the level of violence in their preferred television program. Results indicated that television exposure is not significantly related to the manifestation of …

Culturally-Derived Values And Beliefs As Correlates Of Risk For Problem Gambling., Melissa C. Hobbs Jan 2006

Culturally-Derived Values And Beliefs As Correlates Of Risk For Problem Gambling., Melissa C. Hobbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relation between culturally-derived values and beliefs and risk for problem gambling. In Study 1, 331 participants completed web-based versions of the Individualism-Collectivism Scale, Social Axioms Survey (SAS), the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MC-SDS). In Study 2, 90 participants completed these measures. Results were mixed with regard to the relation between Horizontal/Vertical Individualistic/Collectivistic values and risk for problem gambling as measured by the PGSI. However, it was found in both studies that risk for problem gambling was positively correlated with beliefs in Fate Control …

Expanding On The Relationship Between Empathy And Aggression In Adolescents: A Multidimensional Perspective., Margaret Yacowar Jan 2005

Expanding On The Relationship Between Empathy And Aggression In Adolescents: A Multidimensional Perspective., Margaret Yacowar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined adolescent aggressive behaviours in relation to empathy. Aggression was conceptualized as being multi-dimensional, composed of both form components (i.e., physical aggression and relational aggression) and function components (i.e., reactive aggression and proactive aggression). Empathy also was conceptualized as being multi-dimensional, composed of both cognitive components (i.e., perspective-taking and fantasy perspective-taking) and affective components (i.e., empathic concern and personal distress). Adolescents in grades 11 and 12 were asked to complete one self-report measure each for aggression and empathy. Correlation analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between each aggression component and each empathy component. These findings suggest that …

Lifestyle And Chronic Illness: Variables Affecting Risk Perception., Rosemary L. Plastow Jan 2005

Lifestyle And Chronic Illness: Variables Affecting Risk Perception., Rosemary L. Plastow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite efforts to inform the public of prominent health hazards, a substantial proportion of the Canadian population still engages in unhealthy behaviours. Theories of health behaviour propose that perceived vulnerability to negative health outcomes influences the likelihood of engaging in healthy behaviours. However, research has demonstrated that people can be optimistic when making risk predictions for negative health outcomes, and perceive that bad things are less likely to happen to them. This phenomenon has been called unrealistic optimism (Weinstein, 1980), and has been demonstrated for a wide variety of events with respect to comparative risk judgments. A major goal of …

The Existence Of Suicidal Subgroups: Anaclitic And Introjective Forms Of Suicide., Norman Fazaa Jan 2005

The Existence Of Suicidal Subgroups: Anaclitic And Introjective Forms Of Suicide., Norman Fazaa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies on suicide have largely been inadequate because they have failed to understand suicidality from a comprehensive theoretical basis, which has contributed to the poor ability of mental health practitioners to predict and avert completed suicide. The aim of the present study was therefore to apply Blatt's theory of distinctive forms of disorder, based on dependent and self-critical personality dimensions (Blatt 1974, Blatt & Shichman, 1983), to suicidal behavior, and use this theory to facilitate an in-depth discussion of suicidal action. Ninety-six undergraduate students that had attempted suicide in the past participated and were administered a series of measures related …

Gambling In Older Adults: Factors Associated With Problem Gambling Behaviour In Older Adults., Mark W. Langewisch Jan 2004

Gambling In Older Adults: Factors Associated With Problem Gambling Behaviour In Older Adults., Mark W. Langewisch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increase in the accessibility and social acceptance of gambling activities and venues has resulted in a significant rise in the number of individuals gambling. Older adults in particular appear to be gambling at a much higher rate, although relatively little research has examined this population with respect to gambling. The purpose of this study was to examine the etiological, social, emotional, and situational variables related to the onset and maintenance of problem gambling in older adults. Specifically, the relationship between depression, stress, coping styles, health, dissociation, and childhood trauma, and gambling seventy were investigated from the frameworks of Jacobs' General …

The Effect Of Exposure To A Desirable Mate On The Eating Behaviour Of Single Versus Committed Women According To Restraint Status: An Evolutionary Perspective., Sara L. Robillard Jan 2004

The Effect Of Exposure To A Desirable Mate On The Eating Behaviour Of Single Versus Committed Women According To Restraint Status: An Evolutionary Perspective., Sara L. Robillard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate an evolutionary model of eating disorders. More specifically, this study tested Riadh Abed's Sexual Competition Theory of Eating Disorders (1998). This theory postulates that eating disorders arise through female intra-sexual competition for males. Specifically, females wish to present themselves as evolutionarily desirable to males (physically attractive, thin), causing some individuals to develop restrained eating patterns. This is important, as restraint is a precursor to disordered eating. Restraint refers to replacing internally regulated (hunger driven) eating with planned, cognitively determined eating or dietary restraint with the goal of weight loss or preventing weight …

Relative Stability Of The Neuropsychological Profiles Of Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities (Nvld) And Basic Phonological Processing Disabilities (Bppd) From Middle Childhood To Early Adolescence., Nikhil S. Koushik Jan 2003

Relative Stability Of The Neuropsychological Profiles Of Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities (Nvld) And Basic Phonological Processing Disabilities (Bppd) From Middle Childhood To Early Adolescence., Nikhil S. Koushik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study is a longitudinal comparison of relative neuropsychological assets and deficits for young and older children with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD) and Basic Phonological Processing Disabilities (BPPD). The sample for the investigation was comprised of clinic-referred children who had been diagnosed with either NLD or BPPD by an experienced clinical neuropsychologist. A total of 18 children, nine in each of the NLD and BPPD groups were selected. The children were between 7 and 8 years of age at first testing, and 9 and 14 years of age at second testing, inclusive. The NLD and BPPD groups were compared …

Imagery Use In Dependent And Non-Dependent Male Weight Lifters., Arvin J. Kim Jan 2003

Imagery Use In Dependent And Non-Dependent Male Weight Lifters., Arvin J. Kim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Exercise addiction has been referred to in the literature as exercise dependence (Frederick & Morrison, 1996), compulsive exercise (Diekhoff, 1984), and obligatory exercise (Thompson & Pasman, 1991). Hall (1995) originally proposed that imagery might be linked to exercise addiction. Based on Hall's proposal, Rodgers, Hall, Blanchard, and Munroe (2001) examined the use of imagery by obligatory exercisers involved in a variety of activities. Results indicated that energy imagery and technique imagery, when combined, accounted for approximately 20% of the variance in exercise dependence. Sport imagery research has found that imagery use differs from sport to sport (Munroe, Hall, Simms, & …

Women's Stories Of Power: Exploring Reclamation And Subversion Of Heterosexual Sex., Julie Marie. Fraser Jan 2000

Women's Stories Of Power: Exploring Reclamation And Subversion Of Heterosexual Sex., Julie Marie. Fraser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent attention has been drawn to the need to theorize heterosexuality (Hollway, 1993; Kitzinger & Wilkinson, 1993; Richardson, 1996; Segal, 1994). While the critical emphasis in gay and lesbian, and queer theory has focused on heterosexuality as a normative/foundational identity, radical feminist theory has targeted heterosexuality for its embeddedness in a gender system that disempowers and subordinates women (Jeffreys, 1990; Kitzinger & Wilkinson, 1994; MacKinnon, 1987). Given the problematic nature of heterosexuality from this vantage point, heterosexuality has at times been painted as a "political anathema" for feminists (Kitzinger & Wilkinson, 1994). However, heterosexual feminists and other women have also …

Predicting Women's Breast Self-Examination Behaviour., Arlene D. Cox Jan 1994

Predicting Women's Breast Self-Examination Behaviour., Arlene D. Cox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breast self-examination (BSE) is an effective way to discover breast cancer early. Unfortunately only 14 to 40% of women perform BSE monthly. The Health Belief Model (HBM) presents seven factors considered to influence health behaviour. The Stage of change research focuses on the processes involved in changing a negative behaviour or acquiring a desired one. This study created an algorithm to classify each woman into one of five stages based on past performance and intent to perform BSE. The aim was to create a better method of predicting BSE behaviour, and current readiness to initiate monthly BSE, by combining health …
