Mindfulness As A Protective Factor Against Body Dissatisfaction: Mechanism Of Action, Jessica Barrington Oct 2017

Mindfulness As A Protective Factor Against Body Dissatisfaction: Mechanism Of Action, Jessica Barrington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mindfulness is the tendency to pay attention, on purpose and in an open and non-judgmental way, to experiences. An association between higher dispositional mindfulness and body satisfaction has been demonstrated, but the mechanism of this association remains unclear. In the present study, thought suppression was tested as a mediator of the association between mindfulness and body satisfaction, and mindfulness was tested as a protective factor against lowered body satisfaction. In Study 1, participants (N = 234) completed online measures of mindfulness, thought suppression, and body satisfaction. After controlling for depression, selfesteem, and BMI, describing, acting with awareness, and non-judgement were …

The Relationship Between Trauma And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Lung Cancer Patients : The Potential Protective Role Of Mindfulness., Rene Bayley-Veloso Aug 2017

The Relationship Between Trauma And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Lung Cancer Patients : The Potential Protective Role Of Mindfulness., Rene Bayley-Veloso

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lung cancer is the most common malignant disease worldwide, and the rapid decline in functioning due to the often-later stage diagnosis can strongly impact a patient’s health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Palliative care, with the aim of improving later-stage HRQOL, is often a main goal of treatment. Compared to other cancer types, patients with lung cancer experience the greatest amount of psychological distress during and after treatment. Prior trauma exposure, and the potentially traumatic nature of the cancer experience, can further complicate HRQOL. Mindfulness, an innate or acquired capacity for sustaining attention in the present moment with qualities of self-warmth …

Resiliency, Generalized Self-Efficacy And Mindfulness As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Stress And Both Life Satisfaction And Depression Among College Students: An Investigation Of The Resilience Process, Ben N. Smith Iv Jun 2017

Resiliency, Generalized Self-Efficacy And Mindfulness As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Stress And Both Life Satisfaction And Depression Among College Students: An Investigation Of The Resilience Process, Ben N. Smith Iv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation attempted to add to the resilience literature by answering two research questions. The first was:"does resiliency serve as a unique protective factor compared to generalized self-efficacy (GSE) and mindfulness?" It was hypothesized that (1a) GSE, mindfulness and resiliency at time 1 would all uniquely predict lower depression and higher life-satisfaction at time 2; (1b) resiliency would be a stronger predictor of these outcomes than mindfulness and GSE; and (2) resiliency would uniquely buffer the relationship between stress and both time 2 depression and life satisfaction. The second question was: "Is resiliency predicted by GSE and mindfulness, or, alternatively, …

Mindfulness And Alcohol-Related Problems Among Individuals With Fibromyalgia: Chronic Pain And Depressive Symptoms As Mediators, Julie I. Morrissey May 2017

Mindfulness And Alcohol-Related Problems Among Individuals With Fibromyalgia: Chronic Pain And Depressive Symptoms As Mediators, Julie I. Morrissey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mindfulness is a cognitive attribute that is associated with better health and well-being. Fibromyalgia is a neurosensory disorder primarily characterized by chronic pain and comorbid depression, leading to an increased risk for alcohol-related problems. Empirical literature confirms mindfulness has beneficial associations with chronic pain, depression, alcohol-related problems, and fibromyalgia. Mindfulness may lead to better health and well-being by facilitating self-monitoring, objective reperceiving, and purposeful changing of health-related behaviors. It was hypothesized that higher levels of mindfulness would be related to lower levels of chronic pain and depressive symptoms, and, in turn, to fewer alcohol-related problems among individuals with fibromyalgia. Cross-sectional …

Client Experiences Of Mindfulness Meditation In The Counseling Setting: A Qualitative Study, Veronica L. O'Brien May 2017

Client Experiences Of Mindfulness Meditation In The Counseling Setting: A Qualitative Study, Veronica L. O'Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mindfulness meditation is an emerging trend, and previous research conducted focused on benefits of mindfulness meditation as a training technique for beginning counselors, symptoms mindfulness meditation may alleviate, and specific types of mindfulness meditation (e.g., Feldman, Greeson, & Senville, 2010; Greason & Welfare, 2013; Khoury et al., 2013; Sedlmeier, et al., 2012). Little research exists on the client’s experiences when mindfulness meditation is used within the counseling session; therefore the primary goal of the present study was to explore experiences and potential benefits of mindfulness meditation and its clinical application in session. Because previous research done on mindfulness meditation used …

The Lived Experiences Of School Counselors Participating In Yoga: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Self-Care, Susan Giovengo-Gurrera Jan 2017

The Lived Experiences Of School Counselors Participating In Yoga: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Self-Care, Susan Giovengo-Gurrera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of school counselors participating in yoga. The primary objective of this research was to gain a thick, rich understanding of how school counselors experience the practice of yoga. A secondary objective of this study was to gain an understanding of how the regular practice of yoga can serve as a method of self-care for school counselors. This qualitative, phenomenologically-oriented study employed van Manen’s (1990) four lived existentials, Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) bio-ecological model of human development, and current mindfulness literature as its theoretical underpinnings.

School counselors regularly face many issues that …

Zen And The Art Of The Journey, Brenda Christian Brown Jan 2017

Zen And The Art Of The Journey, Brenda Christian Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The works in this exhibition represent the transdisciplinary research and practices used to explore humanitarian concerns with stress and suffering. It is a Buddhist fact that all humans suffer. And it is the inner journey that allows the guidance out of suffering and towards freedom. For me, the recognition of suffering was there since infancy. I have spent a lifetime searching for answers through the philosophy of Zen, the study of Buddhism (as religion), the study of neuroscience, the arts (both liberal and fine), the practice of meditation, and the psychological process of mindfulness.

The attention to the present moment …

Are Normally-Distributed Dark Triad Traits Associated With Trait Mindfulness In University Students?, Antonette Scavone Jan 2017

Are Normally-Distributed Dark Triad Traits Associated With Trait Mindfulness In University Students?, Antonette Scavone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Dark Triad, which encompasses psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism, has been associated with difficulties with identifying and describing emotions, labelled alexithymia. Narcissism, however, has been associated with greater emotional intelligence, which includes the ability to regulate and utilize one’s emotions in problem solving. Research has yet to examine the association of the Dark Triad and mindfulness, with mindfulness referring to awareness of one’s thoughts and emotions in the present moment. The current study investigated the association between the Dark Triad traits and trait mindfulness, while examining the role of alexithymia and emotional intelligence in this association (N=246). Using linear regression …

Examining Anxiety Schemas Through The Context Of A Stress-Intrapersonal Model, Kayla M. Leleux-Labarge Jan 2017

Examining Anxiety Schemas Through The Context Of A Stress-Intrapersonal Model, Kayla M. Leleux-Labarge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Explicating vulnerability factors to anxiety difficulties is important as the National Comorbidity Study (NCS) lists anxiety as the most common and costly class of mental health disorders in the United States. Maladaptive schemas, as theorized by Young (1990), perpetuate anxiety pathology by hindering the individual’s ability to alter behaviors, thoughts, emotions, and overall approach to adverse events. Previous research indicates that intrapersonal resources can stymie the development of psychopathological features, even in the context of adverse life events (Floyd, Seltzer, Greenberg, & Song, 2013). The main purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship among adverse life events …
