Accurate And Justifiable : New Algorithms For Explainable Recommendations., Behnoush Abdollahi Aug 2017

Accurate And Justifiable : New Algorithms For Explainable Recommendations., Behnoush Abdollahi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Websites and online services thrive with large amounts of online information, products, and choices, that are available but exceedingly difficult to find and discover. This has prompted two major paradigms to help sift through information: information retrieval and recommender systems. The broad family of information retrieval techniques has given rise to the modern search engines which return relevant results, following a user's explicit query. The broad family of recommender systems, on the other hand, works in a more subtle manner, and do not require an explicit query to provide relevant results. Collaborative Filtering (CF) recommender systems are based on algorithms …

Dynamic Adversarial Mining - Effectively Applying Machine Learning In Adversarial Non-Stationary Environments., Tegjyot Singh Sethi Aug 2017

Dynamic Adversarial Mining - Effectively Applying Machine Learning In Adversarial Non-Stationary Environments., Tegjyot Singh Sethi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While understanding of machine learning and data mining is still in its budding stages, the engineering applications of the same has found immense acceptance and success. Cybersecurity applications such as intrusion detection systems, spam filtering, and CAPTCHA authentication, have all begun adopting machine learning as a viable technique to deal with large scale adversarial activity. However, the naive usage of machine learning in an adversarial setting is prone to reverse engineering and evasion attacks, as most of these techniques were designed primarily for a static setting. The security domain is a dynamic landscape, with an ongoing never ending arms race …

Microseismic Monitoring And Denoising, Syed Mostafa Mousavi May 2017

Microseismic Monitoring And Denoising, Syed Mostafa Mousavi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Microseismic data recorded by surface arrays are often strongly contaminated by unwanted noise. This background noise makes the detection and location of small magnitude events difficult. The focus of this dissertation is to develop methods for improving the detection and location of microseismic events through multidisciplinary approaches. A method for automatic techniques is presented. We also introduce four different methods for automatic denoising of seismic data. These methods are based on the time-frequency thresholding approach. We have improved the efficiency and performance of the thresholding-based method for seismic data that can improve detection of small events and arrival time picking …

Uncovering Exceptional Predictions Using Exploratory Analysis Of Second Stage Machine Learning., Aneseh Alvanpour May 2017

Uncovering Exceptional Predictions Using Exploratory Analysis Of Second Stage Machine Learning., Aneseh Alvanpour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nowadays, algorithmic systems for making decisions are widely used to facilitate decisions in a variety of fields such as medicine, banking, applying for universities or network security. However, many machine learning algorithms are well-known for their complex mathematical internal workings which turn them into black boxes and makes their decision-making process usually difficult to understand even for experts. In this thesis, we try to develop a methodology to explain why a certain exceptional machine learned decision was made incorrectly by using the interpretability of the decision tree classifier. Our approach can provide insights about potential flaws in feature definition or …

Developing Computer Vision Technology To Automate Pitch Analysis In Baseball., Mahdi Moalla May 2017

Developing Computer Vision Technology To Automate Pitch Analysis In Baseball., Mahdi Moalla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lokator is a baseball training system designed to document pitch location while teaching pitch command, selection and sequencing. It is composed of a pitching target and a smartphone app. The target is divided into a set of zones to identify the pitch location. The main limitation of the current system is its reliance on the user's feedback. After each throw, the pitcher or the coach needs to identify and report the target's zone that was hit by the ball by just relying on the naked eye. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the possibility of using computer vision …

Data Driven Discovery Of Materials Properties., Fadoua Khmaissia May 2017

Data Driven Discovery Of Materials Properties., Fadoua Khmaissia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The high pace of nowadays industrial evolution is creating an urgent need to design new cost efficient materials that can satisfy both current and future demands. However, with the increase of structural and functional complexity of materials, the ability to rationally design new materials with a precise set of properties has become increasingly challenging. This basic observation has triggered the idea of applying machine learning techniques in the field, which was further encouraged by the launch of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) by the US government since 2011. In this work, we present a novel approach to apply machine learning …

Using A Multi Variate Pattern Analysis (Mvpa) Approach To Decode Fmri Responses To Fear And Anxiety., Sajjad Torabian Esfahani May 2017

Using A Multi Variate Pattern Analysis (Mvpa) Approach To Decode Fmri Responses To Fear And Anxiety., Sajjad Torabian Esfahani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzed fMRI responses to fear and anxiety using a Multi Variate Pattern Analysis (MVPA) approach. Compared to conventional univariate methods which only represent regions of activation, MVPA provides us with more detailed patterns of voxels. We successfully found different patterns for fear and anxiety through separate classification attempts in each subject’s representational space. Further, we transformed all the individual models into a standard space to do group analysis. Results showed that subjects share a more common fear response. Also, the amygdala and hippocampus areas are more important for differentiating fear than anxiety.

Audio-Based Productivity Forecasting Of Construction Cyclic Activities, Chris A. Sabillon Jan 2017

Audio-Based Productivity Forecasting Of Construction Cyclic Activities, Chris A. Sabillon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to its high cost, project managers must be able to monitor the performance of construction heavy equipment promptly. This cannot be achieved through traditional management techniques, which are based on direct observation or on estimations from historical data. Some manufacturers have started to integrate their proprietary technologies, but construction contractors are unlikely to have a fleet of entirely new and single manufacturer equipment for this to represent a solution. Third party automated approaches include the use of active sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, passive technologies such as computer vision and image processing, and audio signal processing. Hitherto, most …

Computational Journey Across Multiphysics And Multitemporal Scales: From Slow Tectonic Movement To Fast Earthquake Slip, Md Sabber Ahamed Jan 2017

Computational Journey Across Multiphysics And Multitemporal Scales: From Slow Tectonic Movement To Fast Earthquake Slip, Md Sabber Ahamed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding how mechanical and thermal energies are stored or dissipated in a tectonic system bears fundamental importance. However, the fact that mechanical deformation can directly impact the energy balance is often ignored, and thus potential effects on the evolution of many tectonic systems have not been quantified. In the first project, I derive an energy balance equation that accounts for deformations impact on temperature change. I then develop numerical models of normal fault evolution that take into account the deformation energetics. The modeling results show that temperature changes due to deformation promote the formation of secondary faults and an elongated …

Drug-Target Interaction Networks Prediction Using Short-Linear Motifs, Wenxiao Xu Jan 2017

Drug-Target Interaction Networks Prediction Using Short-Linear Motifs, Wenxiao Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Drug-target interaction (DTI) prediction is a fundamental step in drug discovery and genomic research and contributes to medical treatment. Various computational methods have been developed to find potential DTIs. Machine learning (ML) has been currently used for new DTIs identification from existing DTI networks. There are mainly two ML-based approaches for DTI network prediction: similarity-based methods and feature-based methods. In this thesis, we propose a feature-based approach, and firstly use short-linear motifs (SLiMs) as descriptors of protein. Additionally, chemical substructure fingerprints are used as features of drug. Moreover, another challenge in this field is the lack of negative data for …
