Effects Of A Software Program Vs. Constant Time Delay In The Acquisition Of Sight Words For A Student With Significant Disabilities, Turkie Ali Algharbie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of sight words is essential for individuals with significant disability. There is a plethora of research highlighting the acquisition of sight words for this population but to date, most focus on teacher led interventions (Browder, Algrim-Delzell, Spooner, Mims, & Baker, 2009). This study investigated the use of computer technology vs. one-on-one instruction targeting sight words acquisition for a student with a significant disability. Results showed the participant indicated improved performance using the computer based intervention versus the constant time delay instructor led intervention.

Experiences Of Playing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games: A Phenomenological Exploration, Jacob Rusczek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the experience of being engaged in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). These games have become increasingly popular over the past decade and have earned the reputation of being highly engrossing or even addicting. In this study, five long-term players were interviewed in person. For a portion of the interviews, the researcher observed the participants playing their games. The interviews were transcribed and subsequently analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis, which yielded individual and shared themes. Individual themes are first presented, which provides a rich sense of each participant's particular way of …

F. W. J. Schelling's "Ages Of The World": Acting Out Of Time, Jared Kenrick Nieft Jan 2015

F. W. J. Schelling's "Ages Of The World": Acting Out Of Time, Jared Kenrick Nieft

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper offers a new interpretation of Schelling's unfinished fragment, Die Weltalter, one that shows why and how he links the problem of divine creation to the modern crisis of Being and time. The growing sense of disorientation, isolation, indifference and loss that Schelling discovers in his own time parallels the metaphysical concerns and dilemmas of Die Weltalter. It is what draws the question of primordial time so close to our time and gives him the grounds to think them together. Cultural creation is inseparable from the enigma of divine creation. To fathom one is to divine the …

The Integration Of Technology Into Instruction By Elementary Teachers In Brevard County, Florida: An Investigative Study, Cynthia Spainhour Jan 2015

The Integration Of Technology Into Instruction By Elementary Teachers In Brevard County, Florida: An Investigative Study, Cynthia Spainhour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Technology has become a part of the very fabric of society today. Technology's infiltration into business, industries, the medical field, and entertainment has accounted for huge advances. However, in the field of education the impact technology has had is regarded as less impressive. Muller, Wood, Wiloughby, Ross, and Specht (2008) stated "…it is critical to understand teachers' perspectives regarding computer integration in the classrooms" (p.1523). With the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994 (Public Law 103-382) the integration of technology in schools should be strongly evident. Currently, twenty years after the commitment to develop technologically literate students, technology integration should …

Critical Programming: Toward A Philosophy Of Computing, John Bork Jan 2015

Critical Programming: Toward A Philosophy Of Computing, John Bork

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Beliefs about the relationship between human beings and computing machines and their destinies have alternated from heroic counterparts to conspirators of automated genocide, from apocalyptic extinction events to evolutionary cyborg convergences. Many fear that people are losing key intellectual and social abilities as tasks are offloaded to the everywhere of the built environment, which is developing a mind of its own. If digital technologies have contributed to forming a dumbest generation and ushering in a robotic moment, we all have a stake in addressing this collective intelligence problem. While digital humanities continue to flourish and introduce new uses for computer …

Watch Me Disappear: Gendered Bodies, Pro-Anorexia, And Self-Injury In Virtual Communities, Leandra Preston-Sidler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examines the relationship between gendered identities, virtual communities, and material bodies, with an emphasis on eating disorders and self-injury practices. The use of the internet to represent and foster particular categories of material bodies, such as the anorexic, the fitness buff, and the self-injurer, has gained substantial visibility due in part to the proliferation of visual imagery presented through social networks. I analyze written and visual texts within specific social networks to assess their function and potential impact on individuals and larger communities. Drawing from Donna Haraway's cyborg theory, N. Kathryn Hayles' posthuman, Judith Butler's performativity, feminist poststructural …

The Branding, Creation, And Promotion Of A Solo Comedienne, Anna Mccorison Jan 2015

The Branding, Creation, And Promotion Of A Solo Comedienne, Anna Mccorison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Comedy exists as a stronghold in American culture as a coping mechanism throughout history, but is often limited to the male headliner. From Charlie Chaplin to Jackie Gleason and Bill Cosby to Will Ferrell, men have kept us laughing from stages to screen throughout the last century. Thus, I inquire: who are the prominent women who rose to the top of this male-dominated industry and how did they create a brand for themselves that was distinguishable and celebrated? What is it about being a woman in the last century that made making a name in comedic entertainment more cumbersome, and …

Technology Access, Integration, And Student Achievement: Examining Diverse Technology Learning Environments And College And Career Readiness In Rural North Mississippi High Schools, Randi Nicole Peel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teaching and learning practices influence college and career readiness (CCR) as measured by newly implemented ComCore State Standards (CCSS) through next-generation assessments. This mixed-methods study examined different levels of technology access and integration on current CCR measurements in two rural North Mississippi school districts. The approach incorporated a causal-comparative design and an exploration of attitudes and perceptions about technology’s impact on college and career readiness. The study found statistical significance in differences of ACT® mean scores for the composite, English, reading and science assessments between the two school districts. The district with a one to one laptop learning environment demonstrated …
