Hegemonic Masculinity And Health Outcomes In Men: A Mediational Study On The Influence Of Masculinity On Diet, Ryan S. Cox
Hegemonic Masculinity And Health Outcomes In Men: A Mediational Study On The Influence Of Masculinity On Diet, Ryan S. Cox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research has demonstrated that men have markedly worse health outcomes than women and have higher rates of death from all 15 leading causes of death except Alzheimer's disease. Little is known about the cause of this discrepancy, except that in evaluations of lifestyle choices and preventive health factors, men engage in far more health-defeating behaviors than women, including diets significantly lower in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and micronutrients, and higher in fat and cholesterol. One theory proposed to help explain this discrepancy is that of hegemonic masculinity. Hegemonic masculinity is a form of masculine identification associated with cultural dominance and …

How Do Aftermath Of Battle Experiences Affect Returning Oef/Oif Veterans?, Aisling Henschel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aftermath of battle experiences, typically defined as non-life threatening situations that a soldier may encounter immediately following a battle, may contribute to adverse mental and physical health outcomes as they are often experienced as distresing. The proposed study examined these experiences and how they affected both general and mental health functioning including PTSD, anxiety, and depression in a sample of 66 Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn Veterans. Bivariate correlations and a series of hierachical linear regressions were conducted to investigate if aftermath of battle experiences, while controlling for combat experiences, contributed unique variance to the …

Walking In Memphis: Racial, Economic, And Residential Disparities Of Access To Healthy Food In An Urban Food Desert, Brittany Kay Campagna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research analyzes food deserts in Memphis, Tennessee. Recent social science research has uncovered the existence of urban food deserts using quantitative measures. However, there has not been substantial research gathering the personal experience of residents. Through quantitative and qualitative methods I identify neighborhood disparitites in food deserts. Using data from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) and the Economic Research Service (ERS), I address structural inequalities of access and availability of food. I also use focus group interviews to understand navigational stratigies employed by food desert residents. FIndings reveal Memphis/ Shelby County is home to food desert neighborhoods …

Women And Time: Food Work Politics Of Self Defined Healthy Men, Juan Barredo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the way gender operates in relation to time within the food work spectrum discussed in 19 narratives. The 19 narratives came from individual open ended face-to-face interviews with self-defined healthy men who shop at healthy food stores. This study's examination of how gender operates in the narratives was based on how the men constructed their experiences with women and work in relation to time through the food work spectrum. Women mentioned in the sampled narratives taught the men how to shop and eat in a healthy manner but women still did the cooking. Work wise the findings …
Is Conflict A Factor In A Population's Quality Of Life? A Comparative Study Of University Students In The Palestinian Territories And Jordan, Yara Asi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As nearly one third of the world's population lives in an area that is in some way touched by war, researchers have long been interested in the varied impacts of conflict on civilians. Many indicators, measuring both physical and mental constructs, have been assessed in war-torn populations from around the world, one of which is health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The occupied Palestinian Territories (oPt) are one region in which copious research on health indicators has been undertaken in an effort to understand how long-term conflict manifests itself in noncombatant populations. However, existing studies focus primarily on indicators within the …

Parental Attitudes, Concerns, Health & Knowledge Of Nutrition And Their Relationship To Usage Of Functional Foods In Parental Feeding, Lauren Elizabeth Guy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purchase and consumption of functional foods is one of the fastest growing trends in the food and nutrition industry. Though many studies have suggested reasons why consumers purchase and consume functional foods, there has been limited research to understand what factors, if any, influence the use of functional foods in parental dietary practices. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether parental awareness of functional foods, self-reported knowledge of nutrition, overall health, and concern for their children's diets play a role in the provision of specific categories of functional foods (digestive health, weight management, bone health, cancer …
Shift Work And The United States Female Workforce: The Relationship Between Shift Work And Ill-Health Effects, Allison Marie Bondanza
Shift Work And The United States Female Workforce: The Relationship Between Shift Work And Ill-Health Effects, Allison Marie Bondanza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study was designed to determine the magnitude of the relationship between amount, frequency, and length of shift work completed by female transportation employees and the number, degree, and extent of problems related to physical, menstrual and psychological health including depression. It was hypothesized that workers that are employed in areas such as transportation who are working shift work on a regular basis place themselves at higher risk for developing health or psychosocial related effects. These health related outcomes can have a profound impact on an employee’s job performance, daily functioning, and personal life. The present study sought to …
"What We Eat Matters": Perspectives On Food And Health In The Mexican Im/Migrant Farmworker Communities In Indian River County, Florida, Hugo Puerto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The dramatic increase of type-2 diabetes within the Latino community is of great concern in the U.S., especially among Mexican im/migrant farmworkers. Anthropological scholarship shows that health issues within im/migrant groups in the U.S. are poorly understood from a sociocultural and local perspective. In Indian River County, Florida, farmworker leaders created a community garden in response to health problems in this community. This initiative was launched to educate families about the health and economic benefits of growing their own food. The Indian River County Health Department and the local leaders are working collaboratively to inform the community about the risks …
