The Effectiveness Of An Intervention To Improve Vehicle Safety For Children., Lisa Anne High Jan 2005

The Effectiveness Of An Intervention To Improve Vehicle Safety For Children., Lisa Anne High

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Motor vehicle crashes (MVC's) are the leading cause of death and serious injury among children 14 years and younger (Murphy, 1998; Zaza et al., 2001). The purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of a parent focused intervention on parents knowledge of correct car seat use for children 0 months of age to 10 years of age. A pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design was used to test the effectiveness of a parent focused intervention. The parent focused intervention included a multi-media education program using a variety of learning strategies. For this multi-media education program, parent participants used a self-directed …

Examining The Impact Of Chest Tube-Related Factors On The Risk Of Nosocomial Infections In A Community Based Hospital., Margaret M. (Peggy) Oldfield Jan 2005

Examining The Impact Of Chest Tube-Related Factors On The Risk Of Nosocomial Infections In A Community Based Hospital., Margaret M. (Peggy) Oldfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. The study was conducted to investigate the impact of chest tube-related factors on the risk for development of nosocomial infections (NI) and to examine the independent predictors of NI in a community based ICU. Methods. A retrospective, case-control review of 120 medical records of ICU patients was conducted. Two groups were compared using t-test and chi square comparisons on each of the study variables. Hierarchical logistic regression was used to determine which chest tube-related factors were independent predictors of NI, while adjusting for other known risk factors. Results. Of the 40 cases, 92.5% (n = 37) had pneumonia, while …

Coaches' Encouragement Of Imagery Use By Athletes., Nathan D. Hall Jan 2005

Coaches' Encouragement Of Imagery Use By Athletes., Nathan D. Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Imagery use in sport has been increasingly researched over the past few decades. Despite the recognition that athletes can benefit from employing imagery, there has been limited research investigating factors (e.g., sport type, competitive level) that influence athletes' use of imagery. One factor that has recently received some limited attention has been coaches' influence on athletes' imagery use (Munroe, Hall, Simms, & Weinberg, 1998). Research has suggested that coaches support the use of many psychological techniques (e.g., goal setting, imagery, team building), and they believe imagery is the most useful. Therefore, they employ it most frequently with their athletes (Hall …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Perceived Spousal Social Support And Mood State Of Primiparous Postpartum Women, And The Subsequent Effect On Maternal Role Identity., Jane Reiha Jan 2005

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Perceived Spousal Social Support And Mood State Of Primiparous Postpartum Women, And The Subsequent Effect On Maternal Role Identity., Jane Reiha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that up to 85% of all women experience a form of mood disturbance in the postpartum period, most often in the form of postpartum "blues". Up to 20% of women experience a more serious postpartum depression although accurate determination of incidence and prevalence has been challenging. Postpartum depression has considerable ramifications on cognitive and behavioural development of the infant, and integrity of the family unit. It has been generally accepted that the perception of spousal support reduces the occurrence of postpartum mood disturbance (Mercer, 1995) and contributes to effective maternal role identity and attainment (Meighen, 2002). The …

An Investigation Of Boundary Associated Error In The Use Of Observation-Based Posture Assessment Methods., Tara Anjali. Arnold Jan 2005

An Investigation Of Boundary Associated Error In The Use Of Observation-Based Posture Assessment Methods., Tara Anjali. Arnold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. The purpose of this study was two-fold; (i) To quantify the trunk posture misclassification error made as a function of angular distance from the posture bin boundaries, and (ii) To determine the effect these misclassification errors have on cumulative and peak love back load estimates from 3DMatch. The effect subject expertise had on posture matching ability was additionally examined. Tested variables included 'degrees away from boundary', 'expertise group', 'view', 'repetition number', and 'position'. Methods. Forty-five male and 45 female subjects were recruited from the University of Windsor. All subjects went through the boundary testing program viewing flexion/extension and lateral …

Effects Of Image Speed On The Acquisition And Performance Of A Soccer Skill., My Phung Jenny. O Jan 2005

Effects Of Image Speed On The Acquisition And Performance Of A Soccer Skill., My Phung Jenny. O

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, the effects of three imagery conditions on the performance of a soccer dribbling task were examined. Ninety-seven male and female first-year undergraduate students were randomly assigned to one of five conditions: (1) Real time imagery; (2) Slow motion imagery; (3) Slow motion concluded with real time imagery; (4) Physical practice; or (5) Control. Performance was evaluated based on time to complete the task as well as the number of errors per task attempt. A secondary purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of the various imagery conditions on participants' self-efficacy perceptions. Participants were …

The Effect Of Leg Muscle Activation State And Localized Muscle Fatigue On Tibial Response During Impact., Adriana M. Holmes Jan 2005

The Effect Of Leg Muscle Activation State And Localized Muscle Fatigue On Tibial Response During Impact., Adriana M. Holmes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of activation state, localized muscle fatigue (LMF), gender, and muscle on the tibial response parameters (TRPs) measured at the knee during heel impacts. A human pendulum apparatus delivered consistent impacts to the unshod, right (dominant) heel of 15 females and 15 males (m age 22.6 +/- 1.4 years, body mass 71.7 +/- 15.1 kg, and height 1.74 +/- 0.11 m). The tibialis anterior (TA: Session 1) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG: Session 2) muscles were examined using electromyography to allow voluntary contraction of various activation states [baseline, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60% …
