Combustion Of Propane-Air Mixtures With Oxygenated Additives In A Closed Duct And An Si Engine., Stephen W. Mckellar Jan 2003

Combustion Of Propane-Air Mixtures With Oxygenated Additives In A Closed Duct And An Si Engine., Stephen W. Mckellar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This master's thesis outlines the project investigating the effects of oxygenated fuel additives on flame propagation and engine performance. In the first of this two-part investigation, flame speeds, in a straight duct with a curved end section, were examined. The 172 cm straight section was followed by a 90° bend section and a 30 cm straight section. With propane as the fuel and emission zero air as the oxidizer, flame speeds, using equivalence ratios of 0.8, 1.0, and 1.1, were explored. In addition, a commercial propane fuel additive blend was introduced and its flame speed compared to instrument grade propane. …

Energy Absorption And Load Management Characteristics Of Aluminum Foam-Filled Braided Tubes., Christopher Richard. Powell Jan 2003

Energy Absorption And Load Management Characteristics Of Aluminum Foam-Filled Braided Tubes., Christopher Richard. Powell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The work in this thesis presents the test results of an energy absorber that functions under tensile loading. Unlike conventional energy absorbing devices that function in compression, the aluminum foam filled braided tube design has the capability of absorbing energy in tension under quasi-static and dynamic loading. A series of quasi-static tests were performed with various aluminum foam densities to understand the relationship between foam density and energy absorption. It was determined from an analysis of the data that a linear relationship exists between foam density and energy absorption per unit volume of aluminum foam. A numerical model was developed …

The Effect Of Turbulence On Forced Convection From A Heated Horizontal Circular Cylinder., Christopher. Sak Jan 2003

The Effect Of Turbulence On Forced Convection From A Heated Horizontal Circular Cylinder., Christopher. Sak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effects of free stream turbulence integral length scale and turbulence intensity (root-mean-square stream-wise component of velocity fluctuation) on the rate of forced convective heat transfer from a heated horizontal circular cylinder in a cross flow of air were investigated experimentally. An internally heated 5.1 cm (2&inches;) diameter aluminium cylinder was placed horizontally in an 86 cm wide by 66 cm high (34&inches; by 26&inches;) wind tunnel. The power supplied by the internally embedded heater was kept constant in order to maintain uniform surface temperature. A perforated plate was placed at the entrance to the test section to generate the …

A Parametric Investigation Into The Effect Of The Dish Depth And Spoke Angle On The Crashworthiness Characteristic Of A Four-Spoke Steering Wheel Armature., Ophelia. Nabeta Jan 2003

A Parametric Investigation Into The Effect Of The Dish Depth And Spoke Angle On The Crashworthiness Characteristic Of A Four-Spoke Steering Wheel Armature., Ophelia. Nabeta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the effect of geometric variations on the crashworthiness performance of new steering wheels. Experimental tests were carried out on steering wheel armatures from popular 1996--2001 compact vehicles. The armatures were subjected to impact loading using a drop tower testing device in which a 57 kg rigid plate impacted a steering wheel with a velocity of 3.2 m/s. The purpose of the experimental tests was to investigate the crashworthiness characteristics of steering wheel armatures from a similar vehicle line in terms of peak loads, Crush Force Efficiency, elastic response, energy efficiency, specific energy absorption and the Energy Absorption …
