Parentification, Coping, And Distress In Siblings Of Individuals With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Aranda Christine Wingsiong Oct 2015

Parentification, Coping, And Distress In Siblings Of Individuals With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Aranda Christine Wingsiong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Parentification refers to the intergenerational role-reversal within a family wherein a child is assigned the adult caregiving role. Typically-developing siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities often experience increased caregiving responsibilities compared to their peers (Cuskelly & Gunn, 2003) and face unique challenges within their sibling relationship (Petalas et al., 2009), which may place them at a greater risk for parentification. The purpose of the current study was to compare parentification experiences, coping strategies, and social and behavioural adjustment between 30 siblings (age 17 to 25 years) of individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and 179 siblings of individuals without disabilities. Contrary …

Implications Of Developing Deep-Sea Arctic Fisheries For Greenland Halibut (Reinhardtius Hippoglossoides): Inshore Stock Connectivity And Capture Induced Stress Of Ecologically Important Fish Species, Amanda Noel Barkley Oct 2015

Implications Of Developing Deep-Sea Arctic Fisheries For Greenland Halibut (Reinhardtius Hippoglossoides): Inshore Stock Connectivity And Capture Induced Stress Of Ecologically Important Fish Species, Amanda Noel Barkley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most pressing issues facing developing Arctic fisheries is a lack of scientific knowledge available to inform management. This thesis develops two key ideas essential to establishing a sustainable harvest of Greenland Halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) within Scott Inlet, Baffin Island: inshore/offshore connectivity of Greenland Halibut stocks, and capture induced stress of Greenland Halibut and Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus). The majority of Greenland Halibut only utilised the inshore environment during the summer, ice-free, season spending about 27±14 days within the system before exiting offshore. A small resident portion of fish, spent on average 261±79 days within Scott Inlet throughout …

Stress-Related Growth Of Parents Raising Children With Autism, Mitchell Scott Garry Loepp Jul 2015

Stress-Related Growth Of Parents Raising Children With Autism, Mitchell Scott Garry Loepp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study used the Organismic Valuing Theory as a theoretical framework to investigate the relationship and predictive ability of internal coping strategies and external support with perceived stress related growth (SRG) for mothers and fathers raising children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Positive reframing coping, active coping, perceived social support, and low levels of stress predicted perceived SRG. The construct of perceived SRG was also found to be different from internal coping strategies. A second objective of this study examined the similarities and differences in parenting stress, coping strategies, perceived social support and SRG of mother-father couples raising …

Corticosterone In Feathers As A Biomarker: Biological Relevance, Considerations And Cautions, Christopher Mark Harris Jul 2015

Corticosterone In Feathers As A Biomarker: Biological Relevance, Considerations And Cautions, Christopher Mark Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The measurement of stress through glucocorticoid levels in feathers has been proposed as a key physiological tool useful to the investigation of mechanistic linkages of ecological and conservation problems. However, a number of details of the method are not well-understood, limiting the current interpretation and applications of this tool. Here we investigate the pattern and repeatability of corticosterone levels in naturally-grown feathers, assess the long-term stability of these levels and their resistance to external change, and evaluate their ability to respond to a long-term stressor during breeding using feathers from a wild population of tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor). Our results …
