With an ever-increasing number of Chinese students coming to Canada for better education opportunities, Canadian universities are providing various ESL programs to facilitate their academic study in a new country. However, Chinese ESL learners are still facing challenges in the learning process. This study focuses on answering two main questions: (1) What are the major challenges that post-secondary Chinese students face when enrolled in an ESL program in Canada? and (2) How do their previous educational experiences in China affect their ESL learning in Canada? The Full Day Early Learning Kindergarten (FDK) Program has expanded the role of the principal and has altered the dynamics of the classroom with the introduction of an early years team (teacher and ECE). I conducted a qualitative study investigating how principals perceive their role and the role of the early years team in FDK. School facilities are not passive containers, but designed spaces that project particular systems of values. Prior to the development of the idea that separate school facilities should be built to provide students with outdoor learning spaces, classroom teachers commonly used outdoor spaces within their local communities as pedagogical resources. Across Ontario, Canada's most populated province, it is commonly perceived by several scholars, news media, and many classroom teachers that school-board-operated outdoor education centres are one of the few spaces where students can learn about nature.
