An Improved Polynomial Chaos Expansion Based Response Surface Method And Its Applications On Frame And Spring Engineering Based Structures, Mhd A. Hafez

ETD Archive

In engineering fields, computational models provide a tool that can simulate a real world response and enhance our understanding of physical phenomenas. However, such models are often computationally expensive with multiple sources of uncertainty related to the model’s input/assumptions. For example, the literature indicates that ligament’s material properties and its insertion site locations have a significant effect on the performance of knee joint models, which makes addressing uncertainty related to them a crucial step to make the computational model more representative of reality. However, previous sensitivity studies were limited due to the computational expense of the models. The high computational …

Analytical And Numerical Validation Of Nozzle Spray Measurement Data Obtained From A Newly Developed Production System, Iddrisu Seidu Jan 2015

Analytical And Numerical Validation Of Nozzle Spray Measurement Data Obtained From A Newly Developed Production System, Iddrisu Seidu

ETD Archive

A newly developed production test stand for measuring the spray angle of a pressure swirl atomizer was constructed and used to measure a product line of these pressure swirl atomizers -- the macrospray atomizer. This new test stand, utilizing constant temperature hot wire anemometers, captures the spray angle data based on the voltage drop the hot wire probes see as they traverse the spray cone of the atomizer and as fluid droplets impinge upon the wire. Datasets acquired from the experiments are compared and correlated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation data. In addition, angles obtained from another type of …

Dynamic Model Of A Non-Linear Pneumatic Pressure Modulating Valve Using Bond Graphs, Christopher L. Brubaker Jan 2015

Dynamic Model Of A Non-Linear Pneumatic Pressure Modulating Valve Using Bond Graphs, Christopher L. Brubaker

ETD Archive

This research develops a mathematical model of the dynamic pressure response to a variable travel input of a pneumatic pressure modulating valve intended for use in a vehicle air brake system. Generically, the valve is a multi-domain system consisting of a mechanical portion and a pneumatic portion. Included in the mechanical portion of the model are compliance of the springs, inertia of the components, and resistance of the sliding components. The pneumatic portion of the model includes capacitance due to the compressibility of the gas, flow resistance through connected plumbing, and flow resistance through the valve control orifices. The development …

Increased Capacity For Vdl Mode 2 Aeronautical Data Communication, Sanjin Đerić Jan 2013

Increased Capacity For Vdl Mode 2 Aeronautical Data Communication, Sanjin Đerić

ETD Archive

VDL Mode 2 is the principal data communication technology for aeronautical communications implemented in the NextGen project for the National Airspace System (NAS), with potentially worldwide service. Aeronautical communications have strict transmission delay standards for safety considerations. Meeting the strict standards significantly drops the capacity of the number of aircraft that can communicate using the Very High Frequency (VHF) Data Radio (VDR). In this thesis, three methods of increasing the capacity while maintaining the strict standards are evaluated: transmit power control, load regulation and ground station placement. A simulation model using OPNET software is used for testing. Load regulation shows …

Virtual Simulation In Leadership Development Training; The Impact Of Learning Styles And Conflict Management Tactics On Adult Learner Performance, Paul G. Putman Jan 2012

Virtual Simulation In Leadership Development Training; The Impact Of Learning Styles And Conflict Management Tactics On Adult Learner Performance, Paul G. Putman

ETD Archive

Adult learners can develop leadership skills and competencies such as conflict management and negotiation skills. Virtual simulations are among the emerging new technologies available to adult educators and trainers to help adults develop various leadership competencies. This study explored the impact of conflict management tactics as well as learning styles on the efficacy of virtual leadership development training. In this quantitative study, participants (n=349) completed electronic versions of both the Power and Influence Tactics Scale (POINTS) and the Kolb Learning Styles Instrument (KLSI). Results of participant scores for both instruments were compared with scores from a virtual leadership simulation. Performance within …

Fahrenheit 451: Tempreture Rising, Douglas C. Moore Jan 2010

Fahrenheit 451: Tempreture Rising, Douglas C. Moore

ETD Archive

Fahrenheit 451 is acknowledged by many theorists as one of the most symbolic dystopias of the twentieth century, and although the novel has been analyzed extensively with a focus on the influence of mass communication, no study has addressed the hyperreal factors of television in Bradbury's world. Bradbury has expressed his concern about the influence television has on the masses, not only in his fictional dystopia, but in American society today. Television's capability of mass-producing simulacra promotes hyperreality, which results in a distortion of meaning and implosion of reality. This study will use Jean Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality as a …

Developing New Indices For The Identification Of Poor Effort, Scott A. Magnuson Jan 2009

Developing New Indices For The Identification Of Poor Effort, Scott A. Magnuson

ETD Archive

The purpose of this study is to gather data in order to develop new indices to aid clinicians in more accurately distinguishing between patients feigning posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and those with genuine PTSD. Participants were administered a battery of tests that included the Digit Span, Digit Symbol, Trail Making Test (TMT), and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) twice, once while performing genuinely and again while simulating PTSD. The results of this study found that trails 21-25 of part A of the TMT are a good indicator of poor effort. This measurement was found to have high sensitivity (90.7 …

Destruction In Search Of Hope: Baudrillard, Simulation, And Chuck Palahniuk's Choke, Kurt D. Fawver Jan 2008

Destruction In Search Of Hope: Baudrillard, Simulation, And Chuck Palahniuk's Choke, Kurt D. Fawver

ETD Archive

Chuck Palahniuk's Choke is a text that perfectly constructs a world of simulation as theorized by Jean Baudrillard. However, rather than reveling in meaningless, if entertaining, hyperreality as Baudrillard does, the text attempts to find escape from the endless barrage of mediated images and information inherent in such a simulatory existence. It advocates an evolution (or de-evolution, as the case may be) of communication and signification, a willful ignorance of sorts, that will allow images to be reconnected with meaning and signifiers to be reunited with concrete corresponding signifieds. Following a line of postmodern literature begun by Pynchon and Delillo …
