An Exploration Of Adult Children’S Attachment To Their Parents Across Two Cultural Groups: Indians In India And Indians Who Immigrated To The United States, Vilasini Meenakshi Arun
Doctoral Dissertations
Typically, attachment theory has been studied and explored with western populations. Individuals seeking mental health treatment within the United States include western and nonwestern cultural groups and research, theories and interventions that apply to diverse populations are necessary. Attachment relationships are often a part of, or reasons for clients to seek therapy either overtly or covertly, thus allowing research on attachment to better inform treatment plans and practice. An attachment relationship between a parent and child can be influenced by several factors and may change over the course of development, but little is known about this process among Indians …

Evaluating The Client Base And Housing Outcomes Of A Community Based Organization Serving Unhoused Adults, Emi Caprio
Doctoral Dissertations
There is a well-documented, bidirectional relationship between mental health and housing instability. When coupled with the complex historical, societal, and political factors contributing to houselessness, the result is a unique set of mental health needs within this community. Despite this, there is a low rate of mental health service utilization and a dearth of research on how to tailor services to meet the needs of unhoused individuals. Additionally, first-hand perspectives are often omitted, as this population is seen as “hard to reach”. The goal of this two-phase mixed-methods program evaluation was to better understand the demographic and mental health profiles …

Demands At Work: The Moderating Influence Of Motivation On The Relationship Between Challenge Demands And Employee Work Engagement, Lauren R. Dinnat
Doctoral Dissertations
Work engagement is a popular topic due to the positive outcomes linked to it. For example, engaged workers are shown to be more productive workers and better organizational citizens. The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) Theory has been the most widely accepted explanatory model for work engagement due to its flexibility to be applied to all work environments. While the JD-R does not argue that motivation is fixed, it does not account for moment-to-moment changes in motivation. A state theory of motivation that examines how motivation may impact the relationships between demands and work engagement has yet to be examined. This study …

Milling Stability Map Identification And Machining Parameter Optimization Using Bayesian Inference, Aaron William Cornelius
Milling Stability Map Identification And Machining Parameter Optimization Using Bayesian Inference, Aaron William Cornelius
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes a physics-guided Bayesian learning approach for statistically modelling and optimizing machining processes under a state of uncertainty. This approach uses a series of automatically-selected cutting tests to refine uncertainties about the machining system's dynamics and cutting force and identify higher productivity cutting parameters. The algorithm is evaluated experimentally and compared to the cutting tool manufacturer’s recommendations, both in laboratory conditions and in an industrial setting to optimize the machining process for a large aluminum component. These results show that the proposed Bayesian model can quickly identify both highly-productive machining parameters and accurate information about the underlying system …

Impacts Of Climate Change On Mammalian Species Of Concern Within The Appalachian Ecoregion, Lauren M. Lyon
Doctoral Dissertations
Climate change and growth anthropogenic presence is a phenomenon impacting all species globally. Fortunately, with protection of key areas of suitable habitat and climate, we can alleviate the worst of biodiversity loss utilizing climate change refugia. This is apparent in the eastern United States, where the Appalachian Ecoregion naturally form a refugium compared to the surrounding landscape for many taxa and rare ecosystems. Particularly of interest are the at-risk relict boreal ecosystems found at elevation, which are otherwise restricted to the northern US and Canada, and numerous endemic taxa found only in this biodiverse region.
Recent studies have focused either …

Power System Electromagnetic Transient Simulation Using A Semi-Analytical Approach, Min Xiong
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation investigates efficient power system electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations using a semi-analytical approach.
First, based on state-space equations of system EMT models, a semi-analytical solution (SAS) is acquired using the Differential Transformation Method (DTM). The DTM can efficiently derive the SAS of any linear or nonlinear system as a power series in time in a recursive manner using well-developed transformation rules. A high-order SAS allows a large time step to speed up the simulation while maintaining the same level of accuracy. Also, a variable time step approach is proposed to further improve its efficiency. Case studies on multiple systems …

For The Love Of Black Children: Towards Black Liberatory Educational Subversion, Tamra Gertrude Jenkins
Doctoral Dissertations
American K-12 schooling is one cog in a system of structural racism, with antiblackness as a foundational pillar (Brown University, 2015; Dumas, 2014; Dumas & ross, 2016). Within the structurally racist institution of education, Black students are most likely to experience criminalization, adultification, invisiblization, ostracization, and tokenization in school settings (Brown University, 2015; Bryan, 2020; Epstein, Black, & Gonzalez, 2017). For Black students in suburban schools, especially, the antiblack messaging can be more consistent and direct, having deleterious effects on their development (Chapman, 2017; Ferguson, 2002). Centering my work inside a suburban school district via a Black women-founded-and-run non-profit, this …

Effects Of Disease Induced Inflammation On Reproductive Neuroendocrinology In Domestic Ruminants, Allison N. Renwick
Effects Of Disease Induced Inflammation On Reproductive Neuroendocrinology In Domestic Ruminants, Allison N. Renwick
Doctoral Dissertations
Successful reproduction is dependent on the pulsatile release of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), the final common output from the central nervous system that stimulates luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion to control reproduction. While GnRH, and subsequently LH, is released in an episodic pattern, the “GnRH pulse generator” is believed to be a population of neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus that express kisspeptin, named KNDy neurons. Reproductive success is dependent on various internal and external cues that ultimately regulate GnRH/LH secretion; however, the underlying central mechanisms of inflammation induced suppression of reproduction have yet to be fully elucidated. Chapter …
