Joint Venture Ownership Structure And Performance: Japanese Joint Ventures In Asia, Shigefumi Makino Jan 1995

Joint Venture Ownership Structure And Performance: Japanese Joint Ventures In Asia, Shigefumi Makino

Digitized Theses

This study examines the relationship between the ownership structure of international joint ventures (IJVs) and their performance. This under-researched relationship was examined using a JV ownership structure typology newly developed in this study. Four distinct JV ownership structures were identified based on both partner nationality and affiliation: Intrafirm JVs--those JVs formed between affiliated Japanese firms; Cross-national DJVs--those JVs formed between unaffiliated Japanese firms; Traditional IJVs-those JVs formed between Japanese and local firms; and Trinational IJVs--those JVs formed between Japanese and third-country based firms. Two primary hypotheses were tested: (1) a JV ownership structure is chosen primarily on the basis of …

A Test Of The Effects Of Leadership Style And Task Feedback On Self-Efficacy, Performance Quality And Attitudes, Christine M. Shea Jan 1995

A Test Of The Effects Of Leadership Style And Task Feedback On Self-Efficacy, Performance Quality And Attitudes, Christine M. Shea

Digitized Theses

The present study examined the effect of three leadership styles (i.e., charismatic, structuring and considerate) and three feedback conditions (i.e., internal inspection, external inspection and no feedback) on individual performance on a manufacturing task and on attitudes towards the task and the leader.;One hundred and forty eight graduate business students were randomly assigned to one of three leadership conditions and one of three feedback conditions. They then participated in an exercise which required them to build four electrical wiring harnesses and complete a series of questionnaires. The questionnaires measured their self-efficacy before each trial and their attitude towards the task …

Traits, Situations, And Managerial Behaviour: Test Of A Trait Activation Hypothesis, Robert Preston Tett Jan 1995

Traits, Situations, And Managerial Behaviour: Test Of A Trait Activation Hypothesis, Robert Preston Tett

Digitized Theses

Results supporting the predictive validity of assessment centres (e.g., Gaugler, Rosenthal, Thornton & Bentson, 1987) are at odds with widely reported findings that behavioural consistency among assessment centre exercises is low (e.g., Sackett & Dreher, 1982). Lack of behavioural consistency raises doubts as to how assessment centres work. Drawing from principles of person-situation interactionism, a trait activation hypothesis is proposed to help explain the conflicting findings and direct development of valid simulation exercises. The hypothesis holds that the behavioural expression of a trait requires arousal of that trait by trait-relevant situational cues. Cross-situational consistency in behaviour is thereby conceived to …

Ferrous Scrap Disposition Strategies: An Analytical Model Of Residual Disposal, Patrick Fraser Johnson Jan 1995

Ferrous Scrap Disposition Strategies: An Analytical Model Of Residual Disposal, Patrick Fraser Johnson

Digitized Theses

Firms which generate ferrous scrap as a by-product of their manufacturing process ("generators") need to decide how to dispose of their scrap; their options include selling to steel mills, foundries or ferrous scrap processing companies ("processors"). The primary focus of this thesis is an examination of the alternative strategies available to generators.;An analytical framework was tested at twelve sites, with data collection and analysis guided by three research questions and eleven propositions. A range of variables was identified as influencing ferrous scrap disposal strategies which were classified as either drivers, moderators or outcomes; trade-offs among these variables defined the disposal …

Salmon Aquaculture In Shetland And New Brunswick: A Comparative Study Of Resource Regimes Within A Moral Perspective, Craig Fergus Millar Jan 1995

Salmon Aquaculture In Shetland And New Brunswick: A Comparative Study Of Resource Regimes Within A Moral Perspective, Craig Fergus Millar

Digitized Theses

Development is a process of transformation within and among decision-making institutions. The oceans are a commons; the necessary institutions for resource management are organized within nation-state regimes and community-based regimes.;A morality is a framework of ethics governing participation in institutions and associated regimes. As social institutions, technology and property are moralities. Aquaculture, as new technology requiring the establishment of private property rights in a commons, is a development especially sensitive to the moral dimension.;Salmon aquaculturists in Shetland and New Brunswick use the same technology and exhibit very similar production profiles. Salmon farmers in Shetland have established themselves within a property …
