Image Correlation Spectroscopy: Development And Application To Studies Of Pdgf Receptor Distributions, Paul William Wiseman Jan 1995

Image Correlation Spectroscopy: Development And Application To Studies Of Pdgf Receptor Distributions, Paul William Wiseman

Digitized Theses

Aggregation of macromolecular plasma membrane receptors following ligand binding is hypothesized to be the initial step in signal transduction in cellular systems. Quantitative measurement of receptor distributions on cell surfaces is integral for elucidating the complicated mechanisms involved in transduction of chemical signals across the cells membrane. Scanning fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (S-FCS) has been used successfully to perform quantitative measurements of receptor densities and aggregate sizes. However, these measurements take a great deal of time, and require specialized equipment to implement. Here, image correlation spectroscopy (ICS) is introduced as a novel extension of scanning fluorescence correlation spectroscopy that improves on …

Modelling The Motion Of Pulp Inside Wood-Chip Disc Refiners, Xiaolin Fan Jan 1995

Modelling The Motion Of Pulp Inside Wood-Chip Disc Refiners, Xiaolin Fan

Digitized Theses

The thesis studies the movement of wood pulp through a rotating disk refiner, by developing continuum and discrete models of the process. An existing continuum model of pulp movement for steady-state refining is first extended to include time-dependent effects, in order to study the dynamic aspects of refining operation. A system of hyperbolic P.D.E.'s is obtained, but it is shown to suffer from numerical instability. Attention is therefore shifted to a discrete model, and a stochastic model treating pulp as discontinuous flocs is developed. The prediction of the residence time distribution of pulp in a refiner is the first test …

High Temperature X-Ray Diffraction Investigation Of The Beta-(Bismuth(2) Oxygen(3))(1-X)(Strontium Oxide)(X) Solid Solution, Edward Andrew Payzant Jan 1995

To investigate the controversial {dollar}\beta\sb1\leftrightarrow\beta\sb2{dollar} phase transformation in the {dollar}\beta{dollar}-{dollar}\rm (Bi\sb2O\sb3)\sb{lcub}1-x{rcub}(SrO)\sb{lcub}x{rcub}{dollar} phase, a series of compositions across the phase were prepared by conventional grinding, pressing and firing ceramic techniques. Electrical conductivity measurements demonstrated that the samples were comparable to those used in other laboratories. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the cations are located on a hexagonal sublattice, but details of the anion sublattice could not be resolved, because of the low X-ray scattering factor of {dollar}\rm O\sp{lcub}2-{rcub}.{dollar};The compositional dependence of the lattice parameters of the hexagonal crystal structure of the {dollar}\beta{dollar}-{dollar}\rm (Bi\sb2O\sb3)\sb{lcub}1-x{rcub}(SrO)\sb{lcub}x{rcub}{dollar} phase, which was determined at {dollar}27\sp\circ\rm C{dollar} using …

Wind And Wave Loading On A Compliant Off-Shore Tower (Theory And Experiment), Mohammad Taghi Daneshvaran Jan 1995

Wind And Wave Loading On A Compliant Off-Shore Tower (Theory And Experiment), Mohammad Taghi Daneshvaran

Digitized Theses

The compliant tower is a slender jacket type structure which falls in the category of compliant platforms and is suited to deep water situations. Towers of this type resist the static loads through their stiffness while the first order wave loads are resisted primarily by inertia. Their typical first natural period is around 30 to 40 seconds and the second natural period is about 3 seconds so there would be little amplification of the response due to the first order wave forces. There is, however, dynamic amplification of the response due to the turbulent wind and nonlinear wave forces including …

Maple Tools For Hydrodynamic Interaction Problems, Christopher Pratibha Jan 1995

Maple Tools For Hydrodynamic Interaction Problems, Christopher Pratibha

Digitized Theses

Several calculations of interactions between particles suspended in fluid are first described. In order to complete these calculations efficiently, several facilities that the present version of Maple does not provide are identified. These include the efficient computation of series solutions of ordinary differential equations, the management of large expressions and the convenient solution of polynomial equations in terms of a set of algebraic extensions dependent over the rationals. These facilities are developed and the calculations carried through to completion. A feature of the computations is the solution of ordinary differential equations to high accuracy by series methods. The mathematical and …

The Dynamic Behavior Of Guys And Guyed Masts In Turbulent Winds, Bruce F. Sparling Jan 1995

The Dynamic Behavior Of Guys And Guyed Masts In Turbulent Winds, Bruce F. Sparling

Digitized Theses

The dynamic response of guyed masts excited by wind turbulence is examined in this study using numerical methods. Specifically, the report addresses two main subject areas: the development of a simplified dynamic analysis method for guyed masts, and an investigation of the nonlinear dynamic response characteristics of guys and guyed masts.;A simplified patch load analysis method is proposed which reliably estimates the dynamic response of a wide variety of guyed masts. A series of static load patterns, or patch loads, are used to replicate the effects of wind gusts. Empirical scaling factors account for mast geometry and structural properties.;The proposed …

Finite Element Analysis Of Geometrically Nonlinear Laminated Composite Shell Structures, Bin Wang Jan 1995

Finite Element Analysis Of Geometrically Nonlinear Laminated Composite Shell Structures, Bin Wang

Digitized Theses

This thesis is concerned with static and dynamic analysis of linear and geometrically nonlinear laminated composite plate and shell structures by using the finite element method.;The emphasis has been on establishing a sound theoretical basis for the formulation of simple and efficient finite elements for large scale linear and geometrically nonlinear analysis of laminated composite plate and shell structures.;A series of simple three-node, six degree-of-freedom (DOF) per node, hybrid strain based flat laminated composite triangular shell finite elements (HLCTS) for linear analysis were developed. These elements were based on the degenerated three dimensional solid concept. The first order shear deformation …

Shielding Forces On Structural Arrays In Turbulent Boundary Layers, Hamid M. Mounla Jan 1995

Shielding Forces On Structural Arrays In Turbulent Boundary Layers, Hamid M. Mounla

Digitized Theses

The characteristics of wind and wind pressures in arrays of structural obstructions is important in the design of these structures. As the wind impacts a structural array, the loading patterns are altered. This thesis investigates the interference effects between structures of varying geometries and aspect ratios. A series of wind tunnel tests were carried out to measure the drag forces experienced by structures in the wakes of other obstructions. The approach flow was always configured to reflect an open country terrain. Additionally, a sensitive force balance, with a small threshold value, was designed and used to measure the forces acting …

Chemistry Of Antiwear Films By X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Zhanfeng Yin Jan 1995

Chemistry Of Antiwear Films By X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Zhanfeng Yin

Digitized Theses

The antiwear and antioxidant additives, zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs), are an essential ingredient in engine oil formulations, and have been in use for many years. These additives function by forming antiwear films on surfaces in sliding contact, and thus reduce friction and wear. Among the surface techniques employed, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (including EXAFS and XANES) has been mainly used because of its high resolution, low detection limit and non-destructive characteristics.;This is the first time that P and S L-edge XANES spectroscopy has been used to analyze antiwear films and thermal films. About two hundred antiwear films and thermally prepared films have …

Diffusive And Advective-Diffusive Transport Through Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Kazem Badv Jan 1995

Diffusive And Advective-Diffusive Transport Through Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Kazem Badv

Digitized Theses

This thesis describes a series of laboratory experiments together with the theoretical analysis of NaCl migration through single and double layer soil systems for a range of physical and chemical characteristics. The soil materials were tested under saturated and unsaturated (gravity drainage) conditions. The small and large scale apparatus were designed so that soil samples could be tested for "diffusive" and "advective-diffusive" migration.;The experiments examining NaCl diffusion through the saturated fine sand and clayey silt were used to obtain the reference diffusion coefficients for the individual types of soil. The fine sand and clayey silt were then used in a …
