Shielding Forces On Structural Arrays In Turbulent Boundary Layers, Hamid M. Mounla Jan 1995

Shielding Forces On Structural Arrays In Turbulent Boundary Layers, Hamid M. Mounla

Digitized Theses

The characteristics of wind and wind pressures in arrays of structural obstructions is important in the design of these structures. As the wind impacts a structural array, the loading patterns are altered. This thesis investigates the interference effects between structures of varying geometries and aspect ratios. A series of wind tunnel tests were carried out to measure the drag forces experienced by structures in the wakes of other obstructions. The approach flow was always configured to reflect an open country terrain. Additionally, a sensitive force balance, with a small threshold value, was designed and used to measure the forces acting …

Diffusive And Advective-Diffusive Transport Through Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Kazem Badv Jan 1995

Diffusive And Advective-Diffusive Transport Through Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Kazem Badv

Digitized Theses

This thesis describes a series of laboratory experiments together with the theoretical analysis of NaCl migration through single and double layer soil systems for a range of physical and chemical characteristics. The soil materials were tested under saturated and unsaturated (gravity drainage) conditions. The small and large scale apparatus were designed so that soil samples could be tested for "diffusive" and "advective-diffusive" migration.;The experiments examining NaCl diffusion through the saturated fine sand and clayey silt were used to obtain the reference diffusion coefficients for the individual types of soil. The fine sand and clayey silt were then used in a …

A New Photocatalytic Reactor For The Photodegradation Of Organic Contaminants In Water, Julio E. Valladares Jan 1995

A New Photocatalytic Reactor For The Photodegradation Of Organic Contaminants In Water, Julio E. Valladares

Digitized Theses

The {dollar}\rm TiO\sb2{dollar} photocatalytic degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants in water has been broadly demonstrated at the laboratory level for a wide number of organic pollutants. However, there are still some problems that need to be addressed in order to make this technology more practical. The design of heterogeneous photocatalytic reactor systems, still in the infancy of their development, is facing different problems such as light scattering, oxygen starving, particle separation and mass transfer. Additionally, there have also been a lack of a general method to evaluate the performance of the different reactor systems.;The present work addresses these problems …

Wind And Wave Loading On A Compliant Off-Shore Tower (Theory And Experiment), Mohammad Taghi Daneshvaran Jan 1995

Wind And Wave Loading On A Compliant Off-Shore Tower (Theory And Experiment), Mohammad Taghi Daneshvaran

Digitized Theses

The compliant tower is a slender jacket type structure which falls in the category of compliant platforms and is suited to deep water situations. Towers of this type resist the static loads through their stiffness while the first order wave loads are resisted primarily by inertia. Their typical first natural period is around 30 to 40 seconds and the second natural period is about 3 seconds so there would be little amplification of the response due to the first order wave forces. There is, however, dynamic amplification of the response due to the turbulent wind and nonlinear wave forces including …

The Dynamic Behavior Of Guys And Guyed Masts In Turbulent Winds, Bruce F. Sparling Jan 1995

The Dynamic Behavior Of Guys And Guyed Masts In Turbulent Winds, Bruce F. Sparling

Digitized Theses

The dynamic response of guyed masts excited by wind turbulence is examined in this study using numerical methods. Specifically, the report addresses two main subject areas: the development of a simplified dynamic analysis method for guyed masts, and an investigation of the nonlinear dynamic response characteristics of guys and guyed masts.;A simplified patch load analysis method is proposed which reliably estimates the dynamic response of a wide variety of guyed masts. A series of static load patterns, or patch loads, are used to replicate the effects of wind gusts. Empirical scaling factors account for mast geometry and structural properties.;The proposed …
