Preservation For Circulating Monographs: Assessing And Adapting Practices For A Changing Information Environment, Jocelyn Boice, Daniel C. Draper, Diane B. Lunde, Ann M. Schwalm

Daniel Draper

Colorado State University Libraries has adopted a new method
for treating damaged books from the circulating collections.
Prompted by organizational change and the desire for preservation
procedures to reflect collection development priorities,
the method has evolved over several years into a workflow
that incorporates repair, withdrawal, and print or electronic
replacement. This process enables the library to make strategic
decisions about the conservation of its print collections,
enhance its electronic collections, and to more efficiently use
limited resources.

Since the implementation of DigiTool for the Digital Collections of Colorado in 2007, the landscape of services available to academic institutional repositories has changed significantly. A recent migration to DSpace precipitated an assessment of the increased number of services available to support open scholarly information sharing. What's the difference between VIVO and Altmetric? How are Figshare and Globus services similar? This poster defines core functionality of many of these services and how they relate to DSpace. It also categorizes them into four key areas: alternative research metrics, data storage and delivery, faculty and institutional reporting, and digital preservation. The overview …

Managing Patron-Driven Acquisitions (Pda) Records In A Multiple Model Environment, Daniel C. Draper Oct 2013

Managing Patron-Driven Acquisitions (Pda) Records In A Multiple Model Environment, Daniel C. Draper

Daniel Draper

Academic libraries have widely embraced patron-driven acquisition (PDA) models for electronic and print books. Vendors supply title level MARC records to facilitate discovery through library catalogs, and managing these records can be challenging. Colorado State University Libraries (CSUL) implemented four PDA models over the past two years. Since these records constitute a growing portion of the collection, CSUL recognizes the importance of developing careful record management policies and workflows to handle various acquisitions models. In this article the author describes the four PDA models, the cataloging policies and processes, and staffing levels needed for managing the records.

Analysis Of Readex's Serial Set Marc Records: Improving The Data For The Library Catalog, Daniel C. Draper, Naomi Lederer Dec 2012

Analysis Of Readex's Serial Set Marc Records: Improving The Data For The Library Catalog, Daniel C. Draper, Naomi Lederer

Daniel Draper

Colorado State University Libraries (CSUL) purchased the digitized United States Congressional Serial Set, 1817–1994 and American State Papers (1789–1838) from the Readex Division of NewsBank, Inc. and, once
funds and records were available, the accompanying MARC records. The breadth of information found in the Serial Set is described, along with the difficulties in using the print version (incorporated in the literature review, which includes citations of announcements of the digital collections and reviews of the software). The digital version of the Serial Set has its advantages, but there are additional rewards (much greater discovery opportunities) when items in the digital …

Controversies And Scandals, Daniel C. Draper, August A. Imholtz Jr. Dec 2012

Controversies And Scandals, Daniel C. Draper, August A. Imholtz Jr.

Daniel Draper

The U.S. Congressional Serial Set in one sense is the history of numerous controversies, for such is the fabric of our republican form of government; and some controversies were of such seriousness and magnitude that they  turned into national scandals.  In this chapter we review several major controversies.  First, we discuss some aspects of the broad and perennial immigration question, focusing on Chinese immigration in the second half of the 19th century and southern and eastern European immigration in the first quarter of the 20th century.  We then cover an executive department scandal, the Teapot Dome affair, and conclude with …

Digital Preservation And Access Of Agricultural Materials, Amy L. Meger, Daniel C. Draper Feb 2012

Digital Preservation And Access Of Agricultural Materials, Amy L. Meger, Daniel C. Draper

Historians and researchers depend on institutions to preserve the records and documents of the past. As the land-grant institution, Colorado State University (CSU) joined in a national, multi-phase National-Endowment-for-the-Humanities-supported grant project to identify and preserve significant materials documenting the history of the agricultural and rural life of the state. This article outlines the history of the grant project, details the challenges and successes of the digitization phase at Colorado State University Libraries, provides usage statistics, and offers a basis for emulation by other institutions by providing an example of a successful preservation and digitization project at a large public university.
