An Exploration Of Rock-Climbing Based Counseling Interventions, Leeann Wilcox

Counselor Education Capstones

Rock-climbing can be successfully combined with counseling interventions and may be healing for a variety of mental health concerns. This review identifies several areas in mental health counseling which can be addressed by adding rock-climbing-based counseling interventions. These include depression, trauma, building self-efficacy, and providing skills practice. These two fields fill important gaps in each other’s shortcomings. Rock climbing offers what counseling lacks in the form of a body focused physical activity aspect of intervention. In a similar way, counseling offers a code of ethics, multicultural focus, and an emphasis on the best interest of clients to an activity which …

This literature review seeks to discover the impact and effect that bibliotherapeutic interventions can have on students who are experiencing grief, loss, and trauma in various forms. A literature review was created to synthesize the information from multiple studies and articles exploring the effects of bibliotherapy on individuals who have experienced trauma in the forms of death and bereavement, abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, natural disasters, terrorism, and acts of societal violence. Treating Incarcerated Women With Co-Occurring Disorders, Jennifer Nichols

Counselor Education Capstones

Through a literature review, the treatment needs of women who are incarcerated with a dual diagnosis, both mental health and substance use disorder, will be addressed and evaluated. Specifically, this literature review will examine the impact of trauma and mental health disorders on creating addictive patterns. Since it is common for incarcerated women to have dual diagnoses, there is a need for effective and reachable treatment modalities when approaching incarcerated women. Much of the jail/prison sentences do not specifically address the recovery and treatment demands the women need to overcome trauma and substance use. This lack of availability typically renders …

Implementing A Trauma-Sensitive School Approach, Janelle Studnicka

Counselor Education Capstones

With the rise in awareness of adverse childhood experiences, how to handle students who have experienced trauma is a growing concern. Trauma is not only inclusive of child abuse, but the result of any event such as natural disaster, death, or accident that overwhelms a child’s ability to cope. The outcome is a change in the developmental structure of the brain leading to changes in student’s behavior, academics, and/or emotions. Schools are beginning to implement a new approach that assumes all students have experienced trauma and therefore alters the school’s policies, procedures, discipline, community collaboration, and teaching methods. Implementation of …

Addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) In The School Setting, Katlyn Trumm

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumas such as abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction which occurred between the ages of birth to eighteen years old (Felitti et al., 1998). Adverse childhood experiences have been analyzed in the past few decades in relation to stress, trauma, and development. Children can begin to fall behind in school as well as in life stages due to high levels of ACEs within their lives.
