Modelling Hoe Performance With An Extended Source; Experimental Investigation Using Misaligned Point Sources, Jorge Lasarte, Kevin Murphy, Izabela Naydenova, Jesús Atencia, Mª Victoria Collados, Suzanne Martin

Conference Papers

Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) have the potential to enable more compact, versatile and lightweight optical designs, but many challenges remain. Volume HOE’s have the advantage of high diffraction efficiency but they present both chromatic selectivity and chromatic dispersion which impact on their use with wide spectrum light sources. Single-colour LED sources have a narrow spectrum that reduces these issues and this makes them better suited for use with volume HOEs. However, the LED source size must be taken into consideration for compact volume HOE-LED systems. To investigate the design limits for compact HOE-LED systems, a theoretical and experimental study was …

Interlinking Between Income Tax, Citizenship And Democracy? A Case Study Of Canada And China, Jinyan Li

Conference Papers

The interlink between taxation, citizenship and democracy appears to be obvious in Western democracies: citizens are voters, taxpayers and beneficiaries of public spending funded by tax revenues. The literature on the politics of taxation suggests that democratic institutions affect taxation at every stage of the policy-making process, the type of elections and governance model influence the level of redistribution and complexity of the tax system, democracies generally choose policies that are more favorable to the poor than non-democracies, the tax mix varies with the nature of the political regime, and more repressive governments rely less on personal income taxation. Political …

Simmel, Social Media And The Debatable Virtues Of Not Caring, Edward Brennan

Conference Papers

This paper asks how can bare to talk about the nightmares served up by our media? How can we witness horror, only to forget about it and have It replaced by fresh horror the next day? As Keith Tester wrote, most of us today, can ‘witness horror, and feel next to nothing’ (86). How has this become installed as a modern tradition? And, how might we communicate care while escaping from a cycle of outrage and forgetting.

Microfluidic Flowmeter Based On Liquid Crystal Filled Nested Capillary, Zhe Wang, Zhuochen Wang, Anuradha Rout, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova

Conference Papers

A novel flowmeter composed of a liquid crystal-filled nested capillary is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the nested capillary are excited by a tapered fiber coupled perpendicularly to the nested capillary. The WGM transmission spectrum of the fiber taper was optimized to achieve the highest possible quality (Q) factor by moving the capillary along the axis of the fiber taper. The air flowing through the capillary cools it down, which leads to a temperature-induced change of the refractive index of the nematic liquid crystal. This change in turn leads to a spectral shift of the WGM …

Simultaneous Measurement Of Gas Pressure And Temperature Using A Microbubble Resonator Combined With An Fbg, Ketan Dong, Ke Tian, Chuanzhen Zhao, Huibin Li, Jibo Yu, Angzhen Li, Xiaoling Sun, Elfed Lewis, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang

Conference Papers

We propose and demonstrate a microbubble resonator combined with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for simultaneous measurement of gas pressure and temperature. The approach used allows for very close proximity (<200 >μm) between the FBG and the microbubble resonator. The microbubble resonator is fabricated in a section of hollow-core fiber (HCF), spliced to a single-mode fiber (SMF) with a pre-inscribed FBG to form a single-ended open structure. Fresnel reflection from the HCF cleaved end means that broadband light is reflected backwards in the same direction as the Bragg wavelength from the FBG. A tapered fiber couples the reflected broadband light …
