Strategies For Helping Collegiate Athletes Cope With Mental Health And Financial Issues, Alexis Sanchez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This capstone project focuses on collegiate athletes’ mental health and financial problems and how they can cope with them. The project is founded on the belief that there is an apparent demand for services offering practical coping mechanisms and financial guidance to collegiate students. Thus, the project includes a one-day workshop to equip student-athletes with strategies to manage mental health and financial issues. The workshops will take place on the main campus at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB). It was about engaging with a wide range of athletes from across campus and equipping them with convenient tools and support. …

This project is a workshop that includes ways to manage graduation anxiety and talks about fear of the future, relationship changes, dealing with expectations and the working world. Increasing Nutrition Education For Collegiate Athletes, Alexandra Diaz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

When collegiate athletes do not have nutritional education, they do not properly fuel their body for peak performance on the field and in the classroom. This can lead to disordered eating habits, muscle injuries, and mental health issues. When student- athletes have nutritional intervention and education, they can properly fuel their bodies resulting in faster muscle recovery, higher energy levels, as well as higher GPAs. Therefore, I have created a two-hour workshop on nutrition for the members of the CSUMB women’s soccer team.

The primary stakeholder perspectives chosen were those of college students with ADHD, and staff members of the Counseling and Disability centers on campus because of their relevant experience and insight regarding ADHD. Three action options …

Hispanic Human Capital And Financial Aid Application In The West Census Region, Benjamin Lundy-Paine

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

As of 2021, very few Hispanic residents in the United States held a college degree in comparison to non-Hispanic residents. Research has shown that, particularly for Hispanic students, financial aid increases college persistence. Hispanic Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) submission rates rank among the lowest, preventing many Hispanic students from receiving financial assistance. This issue is most prevalent West Census Region (WCR), where there is the highest concentration of Hispanic residents. To understand what barriers may be preventing Hispanic submission in the WCR this Capstone used logistic regression models to analyze student-level data from the National Center for …

Addressing Imposter Syndrome In First-Year College Students, Camille Mendoza

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Some first-year students may have feelings of Imposter Syndrome, where they feel self-doubt and fear that they are not qualified and worthy enough. Students experiencing Imposter Syndrome may not recognize their capabilities and may suffer from low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression. Given the potential impact of Imposter Syndrome on first-year students, colleges should provide training to those leaders on campus who work directly with first-year students so that Imposter Syndrome feelings can be minimized, and students can feel supported and included. To address Imposter Syndrome on college campuses, I developed a one-day training on Imposter Syndrome, symptoms of Imposter Syndrome, …

Improving Stress Management For Female College Students, Kelsey Acosta Dec 2021

Improving Stress Management For Female College Students, Kelsey Acosta

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Although many college students report feeling stress, women may have a unique perspective and experience regarding stress. Gilligan's theory states that women consider their relationships when considering decisions. This decision-making process can create an added layer of the already existing academic stressors that women face. Stress management techniques that acknowledge the unique stressors that women face are essential to improve mental health and provide an optimal college experience.

Teaching Healthy Communication Skills For College Students With Disabilities, Molly Mcshane Dec 2021

Teaching Healthy Communication Skills For College Students With Disabilities, Molly Mcshane

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

For college students with disabilities, interpersonal communication can be difficult. There have not been sufficient supportive services for college students with disabilities when it comes to learning communication skills in a college environment. Without effective communication skills, college students with disabilities may face social barriers and fewer chances for personal connections, which may lead to social isolation. In order to address this issue, I planned to create a 2-hour lesson for members of the Student Awareness for Disability Empowerment club (S.A.D.E) at California State University, Monterey Bay.

College students often lack awareness on how to identify the signs of abusive dating behavior and what to do when dating violence does occur. Consequently, many college students may fall victim to dating violence whether it is physical, sexual, verbal or controlling abuse. According to Knowledge Networks (2011), over 43% of college women have reported experiencing dating violence and over 57% of college students believe it is difficult to recognize the signs of dating violence. To address the lack of awareness, I created an interactive presentation for college students at Gavilan College in Gilroy, California on how to identify the …

Three 5th grade classes participated in the college activities. The capstone project consisted of four college awareness sessions. The sessions included activities which expanded students’ knowledge about career …

Increasing College Students’ Awareness On Mindset Practices While Teaching, Alejandra Sandoval May 2019

Increasing College Students’ Awareness On Mindset Practices While Teaching, Alejandra Sandoval

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Teachers often encourage students to succeed and reward students’ accomplishments by offering supportive, esteem-boosting messages. However, teachers may not always be aware of how the messages they send to their students may affect a student’s mindset. Research shows that when teachers praise a student for their intelligence rather than for a student’s effort, the student will develop a fixed mindset of which the child will believe their basic qualities are fixed traits, later leading to poor academic achievement. To address teachers’ awareness on developing mindsets, I created a recorded presentation about fixed and growth mindsets and delivered it to CSUMB …

Students are growing up in the age of technology. Students are so submerged in technology that they have lost interest in content learning. Technology of any sort can be easily integrated into the classroom.
