Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The annual subtidal alga Undaria pinnatifida has been federally declared an invasive species and has spread rapidly across the globe from its native range in northern Asia. The ability of this alga to complete its life cycle determines its success in a particular location, and several abiotic factors have been found to be important in determining reproductive success in kelps. Laboratory zoospore culture experiments were conducted monthly to test the effects of temperature and nitrate concentrations on microscopic stage production throughout a year. Cultures were grown under two temperatures (12, 18º C) monthly and three nitrate concentrations (1,5,10 μmol) three …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Oncorhynchus mykiss (steelhead trout) are a federally threatened species currently found in the Big Sur River in Monterey County. Dam construction, culverts, water diversions and sedimentation are leading causes in habitat degradation for steelhead. A recent capstone study found that near-stream groundwater wells were extracting enough water to cause a decrease in surface flow, generating motivation for this study. The Basin Complex and Indians fire of 2008 burned 84% of the Big Sur watershed creating the potential for elevated fine sediment yields. Post-wildfire sediment yield increases from background conditions to an unknown level at an unknown magnitude. The threat of …

Group Work Integration For Middle School Math Students, Richard Cromwell

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

To create togetherness in the middle school mathematics environment, I grouped students according to their achievement levels in class from test scores. Working together in collaboration with assignments and small projects I found that if the students were placed together according to their needs academically, they tended to help each other out and even manage to improve their test scores dramatically. This type of analysis has shown to be especially beneficial to the teacher involved because of the way the students became much more involved in their improvements as their peers were speaking to them on their level. The high …

Connecting The Dots : How Is Community Involvement Essential To Academic Achievement?, Katherine M. Meyer

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Substantial research has proven the importance of parent involvement to children’s academic achievement. When I began working with various local schools, however, I noticed a severe lack of community participation at each of the sites. Thus, I was prompted to assess the reasons why families were not as concerned about this issue as they ought to be, and so began the foundations for my Capstone. Through personal experience, extended research, and insight from various local teachers, I have facilitated the process of involving the local parents in their children’s education. As this is a long-term goal, my attempts will not …
