This capstone project addressed the challenges faced by new and experienced bilingual school bus drivers who transport special education students. According to the California Department of Education, transportation must be provided at no cost to those special education students ages 3-21 who are eligible as part of related services. The training for school bus drivers typically covers safe driving, vehicle operation, and basic student management. However, they often receive minimal or no specialized training to work with students with special needs. California had an estimated 38,000 school bus drivers in 2020, making it one of the states with the highest …

The focus issue addressed in this Capstone Project is how well teachers are trained to support a student who is grieving. This is an important issue for teachers because a student who is grieving is in a very vulnerable place, and the way a teacher responds can be very beneficial or detrimental to the student. A survey conducted by the cannabis education program in the Monterey County Health Department (MCHD) concluded that around 57% of users in the county do not feel educated enough in the subject to form their own educated opinions about cannabis use (Cannabis Education Survey 2022). The MCHD decided to address this concern by collaborating with local dispensaries to provide an educational course in video form for budtenders. Impact Launch (IL) is a collective of social impact professionals dedicated to creating sustainable and equitable change. IL provides strategic planning, project design, collaborative capacity building, coaching, and leadership intensives. Similar to those who’ve undergone other training programs, alumni of IL’s leadership training are prone to becoming disengaged with the tools and stagnant in their learning. Special Kids Connect (SKC) is a nonprofit organization serving children with disabilities and their families in Monterey County. This capstone project concentrated on the professionals working with children as part of SKC’s Early Start Intervention Program. The project’s objective was to discover local agencies' professional development training needs that serve Latinx families with disabled children between 2 to 8 years. Seventy-five child-care providers, early intervention service professionals, regional center staff, and school district personnel responded to the survey. CASA of Santa Cruz County is a non-profit 501(c) 3 agency that trains and supports court appointed special advocates for foster children from newborn to 18 years of age. Advocates are volunteers who are required to go through thirty-five hours of core service training, and CASA offers four core trainings throughout the year. Volunteers are required to commit to seeing the child for two to four hours a week, for up to two years. This study took an exploratory look into the perceptions of special education students and participating teachers in the use of self-advocacy skills in the general education classroom. A sample group of 5 mild to moderate high school graduation diploma track students with Learning Disabilities participated in a systematic self-advocacy training. After students practiced the self- advocacy skills in the real class setting, qualitative data was collected in the form of interviews, questionnaires and a focus group. Family and Children’s Services at the Monterey County Department of Social and Employment Services, MCDSES, strive for children’s stability and safety. In Monterey County, there are too many unsuccessful relative and near kin placements. Relatives and near kin caregivers are mandated to complete ROOTS training, Relative Offering Ongoing Ties and Support. ROOTS' curriculum intends to increase caregiver's knowledge to prepare and guide them in becoming a stable home for a child in need. The evaluation of ROOTS, a knowledge based pre/posttest, demonstrated the caregivers' appreciation of support and it gave a broad understanding of the knowledge gained by the caregivers.

This research study investigated the factors that affect fathers' participation in parent training for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Thirty-nine fathers of children with ASD completed a voluntary and anonymous online survey rating how several factors would affect their participation in parent training for fathers of children with ASD. Additionally, two focus groups were held, consisting of a total of ten fathers of children with ASD from the Central Coast region of California. Domestic violence victims can feel re-victimized when Monterey County law enforcement are involved. To assist with this problem, a domestic violence training for local law enforcement was collaboratively formed to their expressed needs. A workshop was also formed for women at the shelter to gain their trust in law enforcement.
