Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
“Stories of a Queer Femme” is a collection of poems about my experience being queer and non-binary while still presenting very feminine. We will always be here. Our lives and our stories matter.

Increasing High School Students’ Awareness Of The Risks Of Human Trafficking, Ruby A. Navarro
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many adolescents are unaware of human trafficking, the signs of trafficking, the risk factors of becoming a victim, and the detrimental effects. Given that adolescents are often targets of human trafficking, it is important to raise awareness to prevent these crimes. Therefore, I created a one-day workshop on how to recognize signs and risk factors of human trafficking for freshman students in Sociology classes at Overfelt High School in San Jose, California.
#Queer: Community, Communication, And Identity In The Digital Age, Margaret Allen-Young
#Queer: Community, Communication, And Identity In The Digital Age, Margaret Allen-Young
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The creation and facilitation of community among LGBTQ+ people has always been necessary as a means of support, protection, and affirmation in a discriminatory society. The common perception of this community imagines the migration of people from rural areas to urban meccas like San Francisco and New York in search of likeminded people. However, the advent of new technology has allowed for community building and organizing to occur more easily without face-to-face contact. In this paper I utilize existing literature, including a large study on queer rural populations, and real-world examples such as the platform Tumblr to explore the evolution …
Swiping Your Life Away Failing To Find Love Through Dating Apps, Jesus A Ramirez Martinez
Swiping Your Life Away Failing To Find Love Through Dating Apps, Jesus A Ramirez Martinez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This essay focuses on examining the dating experience and interactions in the age of digital technology, specifically where social disempowered users of dating applications tend to reinforce systemic social oppression. This research draws from literature about communication ethics, critical theory studies, digital media studies and includes personal observations and experiences. Even though some apps have allowed minorities; the LGBTQ community, people of color (POC) and other groups, to interact in a platform where they share common interests, there are still some dating apps which are more mainstream. Dating within the same platform where ethical communication and intent has been swayed …
Microaggressions Within The Lgbtq+ Community: An Autoethnography, Erika A. Perez Montes
Microaggressions Within The Lgbtq+ Community: An Autoethnography, Erika A. Perez Montes
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This autoethnography is about different points in my life where I committed microaggressions towards the LGBTQ+ community specific to different genders, sexual orientations and/or how people in the community present themselves. I use “thick intersectionality” ‒ an embodied exploration of the complex particularities of individuals’ lives and identities associated with their race, class, gender, sexuality, and national locations ‒ as a means of portraying my message, voicing the emotions that I felt, and the identity I occupied at that moment. I show that the intersectionalities of queer folks’ identities create unconscious microaggressions towards other queer folks. The purpose of my …
Elementary Teaching Strategies For Lgbtq Inclusion, Nicole E. Cox
Elementary Teaching Strategies For Lgbtq Inclusion, Nicole E. Cox
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
It is the responsibility of teachers to create a classroom environment that is both inclusive and validating to the identities of students and their families. This capstone project explores how teachers can create this environment for students and families that are a part of the LGBTQ community. Because of the discrimination that presents itself through bullying based on LGBTQ identities, and the lack of LGBTQ representation within classroom lessons, there is a need for a higher quantity and quality of resources for teachers to create these inclusive environments, specifically in elementary schools. To assess our local community, teacher interviews were …

Importance Of Providing A "Safe Haven" For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered And Queer Youth, William Henry Norwood
Importance Of Providing A "Safe Haven" For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered And Queer Youth, William Henry Norwood
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Queer (LGBTQ) adolescent homelessness is a serious issue that plagues America today. Out of the total number of homeless youth, 40% identify as LGBTQ. Many are runaways, or are pushed-out of their home due to their sexuality after suffering from verbal, physical, or sexual abuse. Unlike their homeless heterosexual counterparts, this population of youth face particular factors that affect not only their cognitive and psychosocial development, but their physical health as well. LGBTQ adolescents also have a higher incidence of substance use while homeless. The foregoing reasons illustrate how imperative it is to provide a …
Civil Rights In A Queerly Political Era : Revisiting The Viability Of The Ethnic Identity Model To Achieve Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Queer Rights, Angelic Cricchio
Civil Rights In A Queerly Political Era : Revisiting The Viability Of The Ethnic Identity Model To Achieve Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Queer Rights, Angelic Cricchio
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This research explores the ethnic identity model's use as a viable option for achieving equal civil rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Building on social theory, queer theory, and queer politics, I explore the ethnic identity model as it was used for civil rights in the 1960s. Specifically, I revisit the model's viability for LGBTQ rights since the introduction of queer theory and queer politics. Queer theory has problematized identity and challenged the notion of fixed identity categories. Queer politics is changing the nature of our society's relationship to our sexual and gender identities. Views, …
